DataSource Controls :: Querying & Updating Data From Dataset?

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I will be as detailed as I can in explaining the issue;I have a dataset I have instantiated in a class file (vb.net), and fill the data succesfully. That data is then dumped into an excel file. What I need to do is to go through all the data in the dataset, and directly update the database, changing a "status" column from "pending" to "processing" based on the store number. As I am new to datasets (relatively speaking, of course), I am not quite certain how to accomplish this task. Below is the code I have so far:

I have a dataset where I would like to upper all string fileds and when done check each field for a value. The other way i thought to do it is to do an upper of each string when I do the conditional check. I would like to know what is quicker upper of the values in the dataset or upper in the conditional statement? Knowing the dataset will contain a max of 10.000 rows and there are multiple conditional statements in the complete process.

I have an SQL database which I wish to query, I have the queries set out and working using the SQLDataSource Control.Is there any way of using web methods to query an SQL Database.I realize this may not be ideal when the SQLDataSource control offers such functionality but it is for a piece of college work and I am not entirely sure which way they want it to work, as all it says is to "Implement a client application and a set of web services".
So is it possibile to use a WebMethod to perform SQL based queries or queries which are not SQL based and if so how do you go about creating them?

I have a database which contain job ads/ I have one table "dbo.tbl_jobadvert" which contains the ad itself and another table "dbo.tbl_jobFiles" which contains the path of the documents uploaded in relations to the job advert ( application form, job description, etc )

I'm using Visual Web Developer 2010 Express with SQL server 2008 Express and I'm wondering if it is possible to query the database from within a VB subroutine located within pagename.aspx.vb, rather than just using the asp databound controls on the main page ?
I want to do something like this in the page load routine:

With the gridview I can create a template field to query across associations but I don't see how its possible to do that with the listview (?). I tried to create associations in the eval fields
(ie productId.Brand) where productId is in the Reviews table and is associated with the Products table - and Brand is a member of the Product table but it was no go?

Scenario:
I am creating a custom gridview control which has a custom CheckBoxTemplateField column (deriving from TemplateField class). This template field column has custom Checkboxheadertemplate (implementing ITemplate) and CheckboxItemTemplate (also implementing ITemplate). In InstantiateIn method of both templates (header as well as Item template), I am adding a checkbox control which has Autopostback = true.
My requirement is:
I want to mark all the values in the binding column of datasource if checkbox in headertemplate is checked. I dont want to mark only rows visible on grid. I WANT TO MARK ALL ROWS IN DATASOURCE. I want to do this in _CheckedChanged event of checkbox in header template.
Problem I am facing: When I check/uncheck the checkbox in header, it postbacks. so in OnCheckedChanged event, gridview's datasource is null. Secondly, in any event of gridview, I could access only those rows of datasource for which corresponding rows are visible in gridview through Gridviewrow.DataItem property. But I want to set it for all rows in datasource.

how do i copy required row in dataset to a new dataset. i have bind a xml into a dataset and i need to display say row 3 to 5 only so i do a for loop but i have encounter problem when trying to copy the rows to a new dataset.

I have an application that needs to read data from a view and do some extensive manipulation prior to delivering it to a chart control (without modifying the original data in the database). I have the chart control on the page, and in the code-behind I've built a dataset which I load and manipulate programmatically to have the table, columns and rows needed (no datareader involved) I'm having considerable trouble binding the chart to the 'in memory only' dataset. I am having some difficulties with a particular task. I am creating a support desk intranet application and I am trying to write a method within a class within a namespace which will form a generic database connection which can be called from any of the aspx pages so that I have the dbconnection logic in one place; you know, going along with the 'DRY' (Don't Repeat Yourself) mantra.
The Namespace:
SUPPORTDESK.SQL.dbconnection.pullData()
Objective of the method:
To provide any aspx code behind file with an SQL Server 2005 Express Connection and if possible return the data from an SQL Query. This is where I need advice do I create the method such that it simply forms the connection and returns a DataSet or that it returns an SQLConnection object? If i've got things back to front and upside down don't worry I'm a beginner with ASP.NET. The Method so far:

I try to use a DataViewManager to filter data in a dataset, but somehow it does not work. The code below produces the error "A field or property with the name '< any field>' was not found on the selected data source". However, when I replace "GridView1.DataSource = dvm" with "GridView1.DataSource = ds" it works.

I have a situation where I have a file with each Account Record contains Monthly Expense Total Fields and Monthly Budget Fields for 2009, 2008 and 2007. I'm working with 72 fields (36 Expense and 36 Budget).
Need to create New Year Proceure that will shift data from 2008 to 2007, 2009 to 2008 and move Zeros to 2009 for both Expenses and Budgets.
I can do this using Parameters and Update SQL but I am under the impression that I must specificaly name each field in defining Parameters and SQL Update Command.
Since all fields are sequential withing a record, is there a way that I can use a For/Next loop to index my way through the fields moving data from one year to another?
When using DataReader I'm able to use reader.item(index) to access data record fields.

I'm trying to create a search page that searchs one specific table in the entrie datbase.Basically someone writes what they want in a textbox in search.aspx, they click the search button, and it takes them to another page called search_results.aspx, carrying the inputted text along with it. What search results is supposed to do is at page load, its supposed to query the entire database for all values that are LIKE the text in the querystring, then transport the entire value set of each row that has a field matchign the query string, and then it's supposed take those values and put them in a template that presents them in the way that I want.
The only thing out of all that that I don't know how to do is write the code for taking the querystring and putting it up against all the values in the database like that. I know that you can find a value in a specfic comlumn, i.e.
SELECT Column1, Column2
FROM Table1
Where Column1 = 'blah1', 'blah2'
but how do you write it so that it looks at all the columns for 1 or 2 specfic values (the querystring), and then it returns the entire for each time it finds them?

Is there any method by which we can retrieve random data from a dataset or rather directly from a table.

I am trying to return a dataset. I must be doing something wrong. The returned dataset in this sample code indicates there is a datatable, Users, but there are no datarows. What am I doing wrong? This example is only using the rows.count, but of course I really need to use the whole datatable as the datasource for a gridview.
