DataSource Controls :: What's Faster Working With DataSet OR Working With Collections (LINQ To Entities)
May 21, 2010
I mean, what is the faster way to get as fast as I can more than one table with stored procedure? Is there any study what is faster and why? There is a big problem getting more than one table at once with Entities, so the only way is DataSet. But I was told DataSet work very slow. Is that true?

I am building a web application in asp.Net 4.0 and entity framework. I am trying to retrieve a list of products based on a collection of id's. I first gather all the id's in a collection and then pass it to the linq query. I am trying to get a functionality similar to the IN clause in SQL. The problem seems to be with the Contains() method in the Linq to entities query. Here is my Linq code:

I got the above Linq to entities method from here: [URL]

I'm having trouble using entities: I still want to use entities on my "DAL" layer, but in "BLL" layer I want to return not a collection of entities but just a Dataset with all the table I got back from Stored Procedure. How can I do that?
The presention layer don't know anything about entities, if I can get just a dataset from "BLL", it will be very easy to work with it as it was before. Only the DAL and BLL layers will be changing.
P.S.
Does entities support stored procedure that is returning more than one table, I mean more than one entity?! If not, This is another BIG problem Microsoft didn't think about.
I must tell you the truth: I am really disappointed about using Entities. There is no logical support for Stored Procedure and too many problems when you want to have N-Tiers. It is like Microsoft have done only half of the work needed so this will be really usefull.

I was trying to delete records from database and sometimes on production, the SubmitChanges() goes through and updates the associated entities yet the data does not gets deleted in the database.This is happening only in production and I could not replicate the same on stage or on my local machine. Now the table in which I am performing the delete transaction does have primary keys.
My code reads like
[Transactional(TransactionalTypes.TransactionScope)]

I am having a lot of the same issue as this poster did with errors on initializing type.
I am trying to learn linq and am about ready to give up - don't get how this is easier...
I'm trying to do a simple update to product names in the product table based on the manufacturer ID
In order to do this I am looping through each record. I was initally successful with changing all names in the column but when I try to query the data, I continually run into multiple problems.
The following poster has had the same issue I have but his solution isn't working for me.

I keep getting the same error on the opening bracket on the select statement in the SelectByManufacturerID function...
Error 1 Cannot initialize type 'DataBaseDataManagement.ProductName' with a collection initializer because it does not implement 'System.Collections.IEnumerable'

I have a form that gets populated by LINQ and I want to be able to update the database using that same form. The form is populated by grabbing a querystring (for example, "edit=10") and searching the primary key for that record. So far so good. I have a button attached to the function below which is supposed to use LINQ to update the database with data from the form. I get no errors, but for some reason, it is only updating one field (Last_Updated) instead of all of them.

I have a Listview with a LinqDataSource. I am allocating a resoure called Bladder Scanners to clinicians on the day selected. The field in the database, 'Allocated_Bladder_Scanner_Id', allows nulls. The 'nullable' property of the field in the dbml is set to allow nulls.In the edit template, I have an unbound dropdownlist (drpBladderScannerDropdown) with an 'empty string' item added to cater for nulls, and
AppendDataBoundItems="true".In order to show only bladder scanners which have not yet been allocated on the selected day, I am databinding the dropdownlist to a dictionary of unallocated bladder scanners in the ItemDataBound event. I then add the currently selected bladder scanner as a listitem and set it as the selected item. So far, so good, all works well. However, if the clinician has a bladder scanner currently allocated, and then the user elects to not allocate the clinician a bladder scanner on that day by selecting 'Nothing' from the dropdownlist, the LinqDataSource fails to update the field. It does not throw an exception, it just doesn't set the field to nulls. In ItemUpdating I have the following code:

Am trying to get a working enity model with foreign keys working but have run into a problem. I have imported 3 tables with content and some data.Lets call these tables geo_countries, geo_counties, geo_municipalities and the FK are:1. geo_county have a column country_id wich corresponds to country_id in geo_country 2. geo_municipality have a column county_id wich correspond to the county_id in geo_county.The problem i have is when i try to get correspondig child items with the following code i run into trouble:
[Code]....
The problem above is that 'test' generates results but not 'test2', wich never return anything. Am i not supposed to be able to do it like i do in 'test2'? I earlier tried to add a child object by replacing ToList() with Add() and that worked. But i cant seem to get anything out of it.

I trying to create a search mechanism for records in a EDM based on text entered on a text box in a web page.
For example, if I enter a partial name of a customer and/or state abrebiation for that customer on the Text Box (abc, TX)s, I want to search name and state fields in a Customer table in my database for matching customers.
I found a solution with the namespaceSystem.Linq.Dynamic, but for some reason it is not working. It does not expose the Search() method. Here is the code I am using to perform the search;

My question is that, for each control the Stored Procedure called or not? If it is yes then it is time consuming and I need to use LINQ to DataSet or LINQ to Object rather than to call SP for each control. What is difference between LINQ to DataSet and LINQ to Object?

I have a problem. (this a simplfied example)
In Entity framework I have a class which is effectively
fooEntity
{
public Guid Id {get; set;}
and a collection of fooChildEntity
}
a fooChildEntity is again an entityframework class
fooChildEntity
{
public Guid kidId {get; set;}
}
Now I also have a pair of business layer classes foo and fooChild
foo
{
public Guid Id {get; set;}
ilist<fooChild> Children {get;set;}
}
fooChild
{
public Guid kidId {get; set;}
}
My aim is to write a linq to entites that will allow me to convert the entity foo and children into the business foo and children without breaking deferred execution ( I will be adding filters to reduce the recordset at a higher coding level in the business layer)
doing something like
this.context.fooEntity
.include(fooChildEntity)
.Select( fe => new foo { Id=fe.Id ,
fe.foreach(fec => Children.add( new fooChild { kidId = fec.kidId}))})
.AsIQueryable()
is plainly rubbish and would never compile - it is however an indication of the direction I was thinking .
Even if I got a foreach to work like that or similar it would break deferred execution
At this point there are around 300,000 foo entities which I will eventualy filter to 5 or 6 foo's - this is why deferred execution is needed.

i am working on POCO entities. i had a requirement to provide Edit feature for parent and respective Child records in single View.
Eg: Parent-Customer, Child-Order tables
when updating the parent entity by using => UpdateModel(CustomerIns);
and updating the child entity by using => TryUpdateModel(CustomerIns.Order, "Orders");
The Child Controls Names are like Orders[0].OrderID,Oders[0].OrderDate,etc
The Parent and Child Entities are updating when UpdateModel() is called but when saving Changes by calling Context.SaveChanges() i am getting exception like:
"The operation failed: The relationship could not be changed because one or more of the foreign-key properties is non-nullable. When a change is made to a relationship, the related foreign-key property is set to a null value. If the foreign-key does not support null values, a new relationship must be defined, the foreign-key property must be assigned another non-null value, or the unrelated object must be deleted."

I'm trying to find an easy way to view the query that has been generated as part of the LINQ to DataSet syntax in my application. I found Scott Gu's blog and his creation of the Linq to SQL Debug Visualizer but it doesn't appear to work for my application. I am using OracleClient if that is important.
My next step is to simply configure the Oracle Manager for the database to see the query but I can't believe there's not an easy way to view this generated query.

I'm having trouble writing what should be a simple sub-query using LINQ to Entities. I have two tables: Customers and Orders that have a relation on the CustID field. Not all Customers have a record in the Orders table, while some have mutiple records. In traditional SQL, you could write the query like this: SELECT * FROM Orders where CustID IN (SELECT CustID FROM Customers) I know this could be done as a JOIN in both SQL and L2E, but my actual query is more complex (about 8-9 joins), so I am hoping to find a L2E sub-query equivalent. Something like this:
[Code]....
I know LINQ to Entities does not support the " IN " clause, so I am looking for something that will work in its place.

I've got a data table with columns in which include Item, Category and Value (and others, but those are the only relevant ones for this problem) that I access via LINQ in a C# ASP.Net MVC app. I want to transform these into a matrix and output that as a CSV file to pull into Excel as matrix with the items down the side, the categories across the top and the values in the row cells. However, I don't know how many, or what, categories there will be in this table, nor will there always be a record for each item/category combination.
I've written this by looping round, getting my "master category" list, then looking again for each item, filling in either blank or Value, depending on whether the item/category record exists, but as there are currently 27000 records in the table, this isn't as fast as I'd like. Is there a slicker and faster way I can do this, maybe via LINQ (firing into a quicker SQL statement so the DB server can do the leg-work), or will any method essentially come back to what I am doing?

I'm getting some Xml back from a service. I would like it to be the datasource of a grid view on my aspx page. Here is a sample of the Xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16" ?>
<ArrayOfTripTollCompleteDC xmlns:xsi=[URL]"
xmlns:xsd=[URL]>
<TripTollCompleteDC>
<TripTollId>5</TripTollId>
<DMSLaneModeID xsi:nil="true" />
<HOVOnly>false</HOVOnly>
<CreateDateTime>2010-06-07T15:54:01.023</CreateDateTime>
<ConfigVTMSDelaySeconds>5</ConfigVTMSDelaySeconds>
</TripTollCompleteDC>
and here is my code that parses the xml and tries to bind the grid. What am I missing here?
var retVal = service.GetTripDetailsByTripID(tripId);
var xmlTrips = XDocument.Parse(retVal);
var tripTolls =
from t in xmlTrips.Elements("TripTollCompleteDC")
select new {
TripTollId = (int)t.Element("TripTollId")
, DMSLaneModeID = (int?)t.Element("DMSLaneModeID")
, HOVOnly = (bool)t.Element("HOVOnly")
, CreateDateTime = (DateTime)t.Element("CreateDateTime")
, ConfigVTMSDelaySeconds = (int)t.Element("ConfigVTMSDelaySeconds")
};
grdTripDetails.DataSource = tripTolls;
grdTripDetails.DataBind();
I realize these are anonymous types. Is that a problem? I have verified the service is returning the Xml as stated above. Can anyone out there point me in the right direction? Just for completeness, here is the grid markup <asp:GridView runat="server" ID="grdTripDetails" />

I have a Listview control that DataBind programatically... ie I am NOT using SqlDataSource or such... I am attempting to sort a column... clicking on a link button that fires the "Sorting" event. So, after cliking on the column heading... I end up in this routine, where I hardcoded the .Sort = values (just for testing). The code is executed... but the RESULT show via Listview remains the SAME. No change!
How to fix this? I've seen some other posts examples that uses this event (ListView1_Sorting) and then sort via LINQ. I am not ready to try that...
Just want to know why dsPaymentList.Tables[0].DefaultView.Sort does not work?
I followed the example at: [URL]
protected void ListView1_Sorting(object sender, ListViewSortEventArgs e)
{
string sortExpression = e.SortExpression + " " + e.SortDirection;
DataSet dsPaymentList = new DataSet();
