I use FormView with ObjectDataSource and class. I have a TextBox binded to a DateTime? property. When TextBox.Text property is empty i want to set the property of my class to null but the value is 1.1.1 00:00:00. My Workaround:

Is there a way to set this property to null without this workaround? Is this a bug in DataSource or is this a feature by design?
I have setup my business object to have a create_date and edit_date members both datetime datatypes. My company want to display the create_date and edit_date fields in a gridview for each transaction. The problem i have is that after insterting a record it will have a valid create_date but no edit_date and when displayed in the gridview it defaults to datetime.minvalue (My default). How on earth do i show an empty field in my gridview for a null datetime field in the database?
I am using similar architecture to the Imar Spaanjaars example of a tiered solution. With a few small tweeks it has worked well for me for ages. I am passing a List<Database> to my object datasource which connects to my gridview.
This is an ASP.NET 3.5 web app written in C# using VS2008 and connecting to an MS SQL backend. It is using ad hoc queries in a strongly typed dataset to pull from the database. This query (shortened for clarity) is designed to allow optional input of parameters (a requirement) or pull all records if no parameters are input. It works normally in SQL Server Management Studio with the addition of Declare and Set statements and it works normally in the TableAdapter's Query Builder:

The problem I'm having is in passing null values to the ODS to feed to the query. Tying the ODS parameters directly to the dropdownlists and textboxes didn't work. Got an error message that there was a mismatched data type. Tried several combinations of code to feed the right values to the ODS parameters but couldn't find one that worked. Is the problem in the query or am I setting up the code-behind wrong? Here's the code:

I created a UserControl and added a public DateTime property. I want to set this property in Markup (ie. <cc1:MyControl runat="server" id="MyControl1" DateTimeProp="1/1/2010" /> ) however I live in a place with a dd/mm/yyyy date format so it complains if I set something like "20/1/2010". Is there a way to set markup in my local datetime format or do I have to conform to "mm/dd/yyyy"?

So, I created a custom Textbox control that I've added a Data property to. I populate this data property with the unique row id. The problem is that when I post back the list and go through the repeater items the control's data property is null. The custom control looks like this:

I have a custom checkbox with the same data property and it works fine. I actually put in the same repeater with the textbox control and the checkbox control have the row id on postback but the textbox did not. Is there some limitation on the textbox control that might be causing this.

The model item passed into the dictionary is null, but this dictionary requires a non-null model item of type 'System.DateTime'.
That's because of BirthDate is null in database but it is nullable and I expect that it just leaves the filed empty.

My also have included CSS Friendly adapter [URL] in my project ( I mentioned this because my GridView Empty data template is not showing when using GridView's CCS Friendly adapter). I have a GridView and a DetailsView. When a record in GridView is selected its details information is shown in the Details View. Type of Data source I am using is ObjectDataSource. I have a dropdown list that uses an ObjectDataSource. The select method of the ObjectDataSource needs to localize the TextField, so i create a Dictionary<int, string> and use GetLocalResourceObject as such:

In the Local Resource file, there is status0, status1, and status2, all with a value (Deleted, Active, Inactive). The dropdown and object datasource like:

Now, if I use an ObjectDataSource and put the DropDownList's DataSourceID to it, I will get a null reference on the lookup to the GetLocalResourceObject. BUT If I manually set DataSource/DataBind on the dropdown list on Page_Load, it works fine:

OR If I move the status values to a global resource file and use GetGlobalResource instead of GetLocal, it works fine! Why can I not use an ObjectDataSource and LocalResourceObject in this way?

I am using Visual Studio 2010 for the first time. I program in MS Access for a long time at decide to move to the ASP world. My problem is that I design my first web .aspx default page with a simple data grid. I decided to connect the data via the business object data adapter. I use the Dataset designer to great the dataset. All looks well and works fine on my PC. But when moved to the server I get the Terror "The type specified in the TypeName property of ObjectDataSource not found".
From my reading for the past two days, it seems that something need to be define (a class of some sort) to let ASP know where to find the data adapter. If this is the case, then why did not Visual Studio 2010 did not automatically build the class in the appropriate BIN/ APP_CODE or Global directory and more importantly, why would it work fine on the PC , but not on the server. I am totally blind-sided by Visual Studio 2010 allowing me to design and test on PC but throws me a curl ball with moving to a server. Am I assuming to much from Visual Studio 2010???
What is the solution.. What I am looking for is to know where exactly where and how to write this class. I am so new to ASP, all of my reading just confusing me more and more by reading so many post on this error. I know it is probably a simple class to write somewhere, but why did not Visual Studio 2010 write it accordingly.

View 5 RepliesI have an ASP.NET Web Forms app using Entity Framework in the data layer. I've recently changed the app over to use one Object Context per request as per this post. It works great for the entire application except for any page which uses a ReportViewer to display something.
I've noticed that it fails when trying to get an instance of the [Code].... from the [Code].... collection because [Code]....
is null.
Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms.dll and Microsoft.ReportViewer.Common.dll can also be seen in the call stack each time it fails. The reports each use one or more ObjectDataSources to retreive data.
Based on this I'm assuming that the ReportViewer is somehow to blame, but i have no idea why. I would need some way to dispose the ObjectContext after it had been used by the report at the very least.

I am very new to ASP .NET and am getting above error when trying to insert a new record into a SQL database. I have turned on Option Explicit On so the default date of 01/01/1900 does not get assigned to this field automatically. Since most of the people in the database will not have a date of death, I need to have "blank" deathDate. When I run the stored procedure within SQL and choose pass null value, the Insert Procedure works fine. When I attach to Web Form, however, I get String was not recognized as a valid DateTime error. How can I set it so Null values are accepted into this date field.

I have a site that calls a long running stored procedure that eventually times out the UI. The procedure simply runs some logic in the database, and kicks of a secondary process. No data is ever returned to the UI, so I don't need the UI to wait for anything.Is there a way to call the stored procedure from the UI and move on without having the UI having to wait for the store procedure to complete?

If you follow the numbered comments, I explain how I am stepping through the code when I run the page in debug mode. Both of the below functions are methods declared in the code behind file of the page, both are in the same _Default class. The ManagersListBox is declared in the Default.aspx page. Why is it that in the context of the GetSubordinates, the ManagersListBox is null? It's as if it disappears for a moment and then reappears after returning from the GetSubordinates method. Obviously the solution is to parameterize GetSuborindates, but that is not my concern. I am trying to learn how ASP.NET works and I would really like to understand why I am seeing this behavior "disappearing object".

I have a DateTime property in my model and I would like to validate it using DataAnnotations.In my view I want to get that DateTime as a number of days (e.g. "3"), instead of a DateTime (e.g. "7/14/2010").
