Forms Data Controls :: Passing Data With A OnClick Of Template Control?
Jan 14, 2010
I need to be able to evaluate the text value of the template button or pass date from the dbDateOpened colum when the button is pressed. Either direct I have tried gives me an compile error. With the current configuration I get this error. "Object reference not set to an instance of an object."
ASPX Gridview Below
<asp:GridView ID="GridView2" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" DataKeyNames="ID,dbDateOpened"
DataMember="DefaultView" DataSourceID="AccessDataSource2" Visible="False">
<Columns>
<asp:CommandField ButtonType="Button" ShowSelectButton="True" />
<asp:TemplateField>

I have a datalist control that is querying a accessdatasource for information that populates the results based on w/e is typed in a textbox. I can't figure out how to pass the information that is populated in the datalist to another page when a button is clicked (inside the datalist item template).
I was able to peform this in Detailsview with a hyperlink using the following arguments:
DataNavigateUrlFieldsDataNavigateUrlFormatStringBut this seems not to exist in Detailsview. Could someone point me in a direction on how to acomplish this?

I've created a databound gridview inside the gridview's RowDataBound I use the RowSpan property to merge cells. The grid ends up looking like this for example....
Data Data Data Button
Data Data Button
Data Data Data Button
Data Data Button
Data Data Data Button
The button is generated using a Template Field and is a standard ASP:Button. If I click a button in an unmerged row everything works as expected. If I click a button in a merged row...the sender object on the command comes back as null and no matter what I try I can't seem to fix it or get a reference to the button.
sender.CommandArgument
for example returns and empty string.

I am using a template file for the ItemTemplate of the repeater control.
Within the template I am trying to get the value from the current datarow.
The code was then converted from VB to C# and I am getting the following error:
'System.Web.UI.Control' does not contain a definition for 'DataItem'
Below are the C# and VB versions:
[Code]....
Converted C#:
In .ascx...
<%#GetAssociationName((RepeaterItem)Container.DataItem)%>
In .ascx.cs...
Then get the value using the following method.

In my asp.net web page i have a dropdown box. Say like i have to bind EmployeeName to this dropdown box to show up as items.
I am using a dataTable to bind to this grid by having two columns in DataTable (EmployeeId and EmployeeName). But i am only binding the EmployeeName to the dropdown list box.
In the UI, after the user selects an Employee, I need to pass that employee's id to a function. Is there any way, i can directly pass the underlying data (EmployeeID in the DataTable attached to this dropdown), when the user selects the EmployeeName from the dropdown. Or i will have to make a roundtrip to the database and get the selected Employee's Id and then pass it to the function.

I would like to use the gridview paging feature and have built a gridview with a user control. The data source has lots of columns, so to make it easier I want to return a LIST<MyObject> and just pass <Myobject> into the user control rather than all the data elements. Not sure how I access the object of the data source to bind to the control. Assume it would be during ondatarowbound.
Also, my guess is there is a better way to do this than gridview. I'd take either solution that allows me to have easy paging and pass the complete object into the user control

I am using a DetailsView Control and have a "MemberStatus" field.
When using the templates in edit mode, I am using a dropdownlist to change the member status.
e.g.
<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Member status:" InsertVisible="False" SortExpression="MemberStatus">
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:DropDownList ID="ddlMemberStatus" runat="server" DataSourceID="adsMemberStatus" CssClass="eitField" DataTextField="MemberStatus"
DataValueField="MemberStatusID" Width="120px" SelectedValue='<%# Bind("MemberStatusID") %>'>
</asp:DropDownList>
</EditItemTemplate>
<ItemTemplate>
<asp:Label ID="Label6" runat="server" Text='<%# Bind("MemberStatus") %>'></asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
What I would like to achieve is, if the MemberStatus is changed during edit mode, e.g. from "Active" to "Deceased"
I would like to enable certain fields e.g. txtBoxDateDeceased, and attach a RequiredFieldValidator for the textbox field.

I have a gridview and basically at page load I want it to display with an empty row. The first field in the gridview would be a template field containing a textbox. I wan't to be able to type in, for example, a product code ('abc'). This would be the parameter for the stored procedure and then the rest of the columns (40+ additional columns) in the gridview would populate with the rest of the data pertaining to that product code (i.e. price, unit of measure, etc.). In short the template field texbox is the control to bind the gridview.
After the row is populated I could click a button or link that would add that entire row to my gridview and then add another empty row where I could enter another product code... populate the row then add that row to the gridview. and so on...

Dim chkCol As New TemplateField
chkCol.ItemStyle.Width = 20
chkCol.ItemStyle.HorizontalAlign = HorizontalAlign.Center
gv.Columns.Add(chkCol)

and in row databound event i added checkbox control to this template field. like this
Protected Sub gv_RowDataBound(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.GridViewRowEventArgs) Handles gv.RowDataBound
If e.Row.RowType = DataControlRowType.DataRow Then
Dim chkbox As New CheckBox
chkbox.ID = "chkSelect"
e.Row.Cells(0).Controls.Add(chkbox)

HERE I WANT TO GET CHEKC BOX IN btnok click event

'Programmatically access the CheckBox from the TemplateField
Dim cb As CheckBox = CType(gv.Rows(index).Cells(0).FindControl("chkSelect"), CheckBox)
If cb IsNot Nothing Then

linkId = Me.gv.DataKeys(index).Value
End If

I have gridview template field with 5 columns like First Name, Middle Name, P.No and Last Name. The grid has a list of people with a blank row at the bottom of the grid (in the footer) that allows the user to add a newperson to the list. I have added textbox under fotter template. i need to add associated control id for footer template text box.I have been asked to make the grid section 508 compliant. The requirement is that the column headers must have labels that referencethe text boxes in the footer row. On a normal web form it would look like this:
<label for="txtFirstName">First Name</label>
<asp:textbox id="txtFirstName" runat="server" />
This allows a text reader to figure out that the words "First Name" are associated with the text box "txtFirstName" and helps a blind personunderstand how to fill out the form.Now, back to my problem. I need to figure out a way to get the header of a Grid view template column to work the same way. The biggest problem is that I have no idea what the ClientID of the textbox will be.

In my project, I need to create a user control to handle the sorting and pagination of all the grids in the application. The grid however will be different in different pages with different formatting.
I am able to do this by exposing a property from user control which takes gridview as the input.
then in page load, i bind this grid, and assign the sorting and paging event handlers to this gridview variable.
This way I am able to do the sorting and paging, but the problem is I have to bind the grid in all the post backs, and then in the sorting and paging events.
So when a user sorts, I have to bind the grid twice, once in page_load and then in sort event of user control.
I can store the first set of records in viewstate and bind that in page load, but is there any other way, so that i dont need to bind the grid in all post backs but only inside of not postback.
