Forms Data Controls :: Update / Edit At The Same Time Formview?
Feb 28, 2011
Is it possible to update and edit a record in Formview at the same time. Currently, the formview's default mode is set to Insert where users can add a new record to an SQL database, however, when that record is added I need that information to update another table all on one click. Is this possible with a stored procedure or a button that allows both?

This is the sqlDateTime overflow problem again. Background. As I'm sure you know dates must be between 1/1/1753 and 12/31/2999. If you have an empty date field, it throws and exception. So I created a function (below) that solve the problem when attempting to update or insert a record with a date field. Works great.
Public Shared Function MakeDateField(ByVal pasDate As String) As Nullable(Of DateTime)
If IsDate(pasDate) Then
Try
If pasDate <= System.DateTime.MinValue Then
Return Nothing
Else
Return CType(pasDate, DateTime)
End If
Catch ex As NullReferenceException
Return Nothing
End Try
Else
Return Nothing
End If
End Function
So I thought about using a time field. I have the field, have the validator in place and then attempted to test the page. It resulted in my least favorite error message "sqlDateTime overflow".
I can think of several workarounds like adding a date or a fixed date to the time field, or converting it to a string. Each of these is problematic.
IS THERE A BETTER WAY TO UPDATE/INSERT TIME FIELDS.

I'm having a hard time solving what should (I think) be an easy problem. I have a formview defaulting to Editmode. One of my data fields is a binary image. How can I change the editItem template to allow a user to upload a new image into the binary image field?

I have a strange issue with the FormView. After working through some issues getting the update to work (as this is my first experience with FormViews) I now have a new issue. After I perform an update, and the FormView updates and returns to read mode, if I hit F5 (refresh) the FormView performs another update to the datasource, despite the fact it is read-only mode and none of the fields on the screen are editable.
I would think that a refresh in read mode for the FormView after an edit would simply refresh the data from the database, not perform another update. Again, the FormView is in Read Only Mode, but a refresh is creating another Update event (which I can debug and see if I break in the ItemUpdating event). This only happens after I perform an edit, not when the page initially loads.

I have the follow form view:
<asp:FormView
DefaultMode="Edit"
ID="FormView1"
runat="server"
onitemupdating="FormView1_ItemUpdating">
<EditItemTemplate>
<asp:TextBox
ID="txtPrimerNombreNatural"
runat="server"
SkinID="texto"
MaxLength="30"
Text='<%#Bind("PrimerNombre") %>'></asp:TextBox>
<asp:TextBox
ID="txtSegundoNombreNatural"
runat="server"
SkinID="texto"
MaxLength="30"
Text='<%#Bind("SegundoNombre") %>'></asp:TextBox>
</EditItemTemplate>
</asp:FormView>
<asp:Button
ID="Actualizar"
runat="server"
Text="Button"
CommandName="Update"
/>
This formview is bound in this way:
protected void Page_Load(object sender,
EventArgs e)
{
Persona _persona =
new
Persona();
_persona.ObternerPersonaByUserIdApp(1);
List<SILPA.AccesoDatos.Generico.PersonaIdentity> persona =
new
List<SILPA.AccesoDatos.Generico.PersonaIdentity>();
persona.Add(_persona.Identity);
FormView1.DataSource = persona;
FormView1.DataBind();
}
When the page is shown, the textbox are filled correctly, this textbox are filled with the "primernombre" and "segundonombre" properties from the persona class. After this, If I change the textbox, and after click the update button, I need to update the persona class with the changes from the textboxes, then I call a ActualizarPersona method for updating the database. How can I do for update the persona class when I change the textboxes and click the update button? I try this method protected void FormView1_ItemUpdating(object sender, FormViewUpdateEventArgs
e)
{
}

there are 2 pages (SummaryGridviewPage.aspx and FormviewPage.aspx) there are insert, item and update templates in the FormviewPage 1st case - there is no problem to insert new record, select and update action in the FormviewPage
2nd case - However, there is problem when i select a record in GV and direct to FormviewPage for edit this code is added in Formviewpage to open the record at readonly mode, no problem
Private Sub RF_Init(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Init
If Session("RecordID") <> "" Then ' to check New or Old record
SqlDataSourceRF.SelectParameters.Item("New_ID").DefaultValue = Session("RecordID")
FormViewProject.ChangeMode(FormViewMode.ReadOnly)
End If
End Sub
however, no record if go further from readonly to edit mode then Code is added to the Edit button
Protected Sub BtnEdit_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs)
FormViewProject.ChangeMode(FormViewMode.Edit)
SqlDataSourceRF.SelectParameters.Item("New_ID").DefaultValue = Session("RecordID")
FormViewProject.DataBind()
End Sub
Now edit problem is solved but when go back to the 1st case (new record, and then edit) Now new record can be inserted, and then show it in readonly mode. but then try to go to edit mode, no record show i think BtnEdit_Click code is conflicted with the built-in "Edit" command Could anyone show me some info how formview retrieve specific record in a proper way?

I keep getting a null reference when I try to access a listbox inside the EditItemTemplate of a formview. I check the mode before accessing the control (Formview1.CurrentMode) to make sure it is in edit mode and even set it manually to edit mode again! But formview1.findcontrol("blah") returns null. Formview1.EditItemTemplate does not have a FindControl method, not sure what else to try.

I have a combobox that is used as a control for Formview, so when the user selects a name from the combobox the data in formview displays in edit mode. However, some if the data that is displayed in formview needs to be empty. For example if the Date is being pulled in, it needs to be empty or null in edit mode.

I 'm trying to use a gv with a modal formview to edit the row details
my first problem is: i can't get the Gv data keys there are actually two but i im trying to go one at a time. the data keys will be 1=rideid & 2=rideleg ... the combination of these two fields make all rows unique.
Secondly: after the row has been edited i need to change the data source so it can be saved in a second table.
these are the errors i'm getting with the code below
Error 65 The best overloaded method match for 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.ParameterCollection.Add(string, string)' has some invalid arguments
Error 66 Argument '2': cannot convert from 'object' to 'string'

I have a gridview on my page. I have a checkbox in each row of this gridview. For each checkbox in the gridview, I'd like to update my table accordingly, but I don't want them to have to hit a submit button every time they check the checkbox. I want them to check all the boxes they need to and at the end, they should hit one submit button.

The following code successfully displays a record in a FormView and sets the FormView mode to 'Edit' when the user clicks on a LinkButton within a Repeater, however the record is not Updated. If I don't change the .SelectCommand and call .DataBind, I'm able to update the first record that is displayed. Naturally that's a moot point because the idea is to be able to update the record that the user selects in the Repeater.Because of the design of the FormView and Repeater, the record *must* be updated via the FormView. Updating the record via the Repeater is not an option.

I have a very complex page with 11 formviews, 1 dropdownlist, and 11 sqlDataSources.I have several issues
Page: This page controls my website users and their info. There are 2 different users with 3 different permissions; users - 1 Primary(account Creator), and the rest; Permissions - View, Edit(Manage), Create/Delete(Author)
Each Formview controls one column in the table.
1st. After Permissions are read, the add, delete buttons are to be disabled if no permission. If the User selected is the PrimaryUser the delete button is disabled. On Page load, the delete button is enabled even though the displayed user is the Primary, when you select another user, then select the primary again, the delete button is disabled, but when you select another user the delete button is still disabled. This should not be!
2nd. I then added a check to see if there was one or more locations, and if there is only one, then disable the edit button that allows a user to assign a user to a specific location. example: if there are 3 locations, you may assign a user to that office location, but if there is only one location, there is no need. I try to disable the edit button in formview, but I get "object reference not set to instance" which is total cr#$ because the button is there in the form.
3rd. When a page loads and all of your sqlDataSources have a Select controlParameter that is determined by a DropDownList, how is the initial record determined other than it is the first record?No matter how I work my code, these issues do not work, and it is very frustrating and holding my project back. I have been working on thes for a week.

I'm using an edittemplate to handle both editing and inserting for a Formview. In Insert mode, the Identity parameter is not needed (and cannot be used in the parameter list). In Edit mode, I need the bound value to know which record to update. So, what I tried to do is set the Text property in the OnDataBinding method.
[Code]....
The result is that the field is bound for Insert anyway, shows up as a parameter, and my insert statement fails (since this extra field messes up the field order of the parameters). Plus, it is always null in Insert mode by definition.
Is the OnDataBinding method too late to clear the property? If so, where can I do this, since PageLoad is too early (the template has not loaded yet and I cannot Findcontrol the field. Or is there a better way to handle all this?

I have a formview with both edititem template and item template as following:
<asp:FormView ID="PFTFormView" runat="server"

CommandName="Update" Text="Update" />
<asp:LinkButton ID="UpdateCancelButton" runat="server"
CausesValidation="False" CommandName="Cancel" Text="Cancel" />
</EditItemTemplate>
<ItemTemplate>
<table>
<tr><td>PFTId</td><td><asp:Label ID="lblPFTId" runat="server" Text='<%# Eval("PFTId") %>' /></td></tr>

</table><br />
<asp:LinkButton ID="EditButton" runat="server" CausesValidation="False"
CommandName="Edit" Text="Edit" />
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:FormView>
on my code behind, I have:
Sub PFTFormView_ItemUpdating(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As FormViewUpdateEventArgs)
Dim PFTObj As New PFT
Dim PFTDST As New Data.DataSet
Dim newPFTLastName As String = DirectCast(PFTFormView.FindControl("txtPFTLastName"), TextBox).Text
Dim newPFTFirstName As String = DirectCast(PFTFormView.FindControl("txtPFTFirstName"), TextBox).Text
PFTObj.PFTLastName = newPFTLastName
PFTObj.PFTFirstName = newPFTFirstName
PFTObj.PFTHome = DirectCast(PFTFormView.FindControl("txtPFTHome"), TextBox).Text
If PFTObj.UpdatePFT(Session("PFTId")) Then
Me.lblErrorMessage.Text = "PFT Update Successfully"
Else
'
Me.lblErrorMessage.Text = "PFT Update UnSuccessfully"
End If
PFTDST = Nothing
PFTObj = Nothing
end sub
The problem is:
PFTObj.PFTLastName = newPFTLastName
PFTObj.PFTFirstName = newPFTFirstName
PFTObj.PFTHome = DirectCast(PFTFormView.FindControl("txtPFTHome"), TextBox).Text
are not returning the updated value from the form.
