Forms Data Controls :: Unable To Format Column Widths
Jun 3, 2010
I'm creating a ListView and have been unable to format column widths. After much research I have found that the width property of the <asp:Label doesn't work. I'm using
<asp:Label
ID="lblVCArea"
runat="server"
width="10"
BackColor="Aqua"
Text='<%# Eval("VCArea") %>'
/>
I test the FormView by changing the width property and it doesn't affect the width of the column. The <th control in the layout template has a width="60" that appears to be working. If I remove the <asp:label from the <td in the Item and AlternateItem templates, the width is set to 60. When I paste the <asp:label back into the <td, the width of the column increases to about 200px even though the width is set to 10. I set the backcolor to Aqua to see the label and it is about 200 px widt.

Earlier,I was having UltrawebGrid control in my aspx page.Due to performance issues, we have replaced it with asp:GridView control.We needall the functionalities implemented with the UltrawebGrid using the gridview.With UltrawebGrid , the user was allowed to adjust the column widthsby dragging and save it.Is there any possible way to achieve this using GridView?

My problem is: The GridView normally fits the grid perfectly to the data so that each cell only spans one row and has the appropriate column widths. However, when I add a row of TextBoxes to the bottom of this grid, the column widths suddenly all become equal, so that some cells with lots of words span multiple rows. Is there anyway to prevent this?

I am trying to create a table at runtime which is populated from information in a database. At the present time the table displays as follows: The problem is I need the "test test" text to be in the middle of the table, however if I show a box around the cell it only takes up the 1st half of the table regardless of the width I specify. Is it possible to have a dynamic table that effectively has rows where the cells are merged together in a specific way to allow the control to be positioned where I want it? THe code I am using to create the table is as follows:

where I am going wrong or is what I am trying to achieve not possible with a dynamic table?

My current code to attempt to set widths for the rows on a gridview is:
protected void RowDataBound(Object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e)
{
if (e.Row.RowType == DataControlRowType.Header)
{
foreach (DataControlFieldHeaderCell dcfhc in e.Row.Cells)
{
dcfhc.Width = 100;
}
}
else
{
foreach (DataControlFieldCell dcfc in e.Row.Cells)
{
dcfc.Width = 100;
}
}
}
But that just keep all of the widths default! What am I doing wrong?
EDIT: I have already tried thise code as well!
PoolToDBHeaders.DataSource = new DataView(headerTable);
PoolToDBHeaders.DataBind();
foreach (DataControlField dcf in PoolToDBHeaders.Columns)
{
dcf.ItemStyle.Width = 100;
}
PoolToDBHeaders.DataBind();

I wanted to ask what is the best practice to manage width of the radGrid.
For my application most users are running 1280 x 1024 so I would be happy to set my overall grid width to 1100. However, depending on the form in use, I sometimes have horizantal scroll bars. To solve this, I have been playing with the width of the grid, and also I have played with setting the itemstyle-width for one or two columns. Sometimes I accidentally get it right, and sometimes it is not quite right.
What is the best way to manage this? Do I set the grid, and then all columns, or just the grid, or just the columns? I guess there is a best practice, so just wondering how you handle it,

I am trying to assign datetime to the textbox when a date selected from asp.net Calendar control in the following format:
06/05/2010 12:25:04 PM
but I have tried following four options that are not giving required date format. What to do?
Calendar1.SelectedDate.ToShortTimeString() = 12:00:00 AM
Calendar1.SelectedDate.ToShortDateString() = 03/05/2010
Calendar1.SelectedDate.ToLongDateString() = 03/05/2010
Calendar1.SelectedDate.ToLongTimeString() = 12:00:00 AM
I want to display 06/05/2010 12:25:04 PM

I have the following gridView and I would like to add a 'free format textBox' to 3 of the column headers, to allow filtering. Much like here If I could/somehow achieve this that would be amazing. I can't use dropDown lists like many of the examples I have found as these lists would be too populated and proving too unfriendly to use.

I have a bound column.
<asp:BoundField DataField="WorkPreference" HeaderText="WorkPreference"
HeaderStyle-HorizontalAlign="Left">
<HeaderStyle HorizontalAlign="Left" />
</asp:BoundField>
dr["WorkPreference"] = sa.WorkPreference ( This is how I bind the data to a DataRow)
The example of the data which gets bound to this column is like the following:
Communications and Marketing Officers; Environmental Assessors; Geologists and Geosciences; Geospatial/Spatial Information Officers;
What I want is that the data should be presented to the user like the following:
Communications and Marketing Officers
Environmental Assessors
Geologists and Geosciences
Geospatial/Spatial Information Officers
In short: I basicaly want to put a break where there is a colon and then bind the data to the gridview. It looks like simple but if you can let me know.

I have created a Gridview that has sorted columns. Using the HeaderStyle-CssClass ="GridViewHeader" The background = medium Blue and the Font Color = White. Looks cool, except for sorted columns. There the text is medium blue because it is a hyperlink. Is there any way to change the color for these hyperlinks?

I have been searching the internet for a solution to this for hours. I have tried all of the following methods to set the column width on my GridView control:
1. <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="ColumnHeader" ItemStyle-Width="100px">
2. <ItemStyle Width="100px" Wrap="False" />
3. GridView.Columns[0].ItemStyle.Width = 100 both on the PageLoad event and, out of desperation, on the RowDataBound event.
I have tried these settings by themselves and in combination. I have also experimented with different CSS width settings for the GridView and its containing <div> (including none) to no avail. The GridView columns are always equally spaced and wrap the row description text in the first column in a rather ugly fashion. As this needs to be fixed for a presentation to a client on Monday, I would be eternally grateful to anyone who could point me in the right direction.

I have a gridview and I want to fix the column size to a certain size regardless of the length of the data in a given cell.
I have tried everythign I can think of from
gvwProjects.Columns[1].ItemStyle.Width
gvwProjects.Columns[1].ItemStyle.Wrap
to setting the length of the lblContol in the template but no matter what I do the column size automatically increases beyond my fixed size to meet the size of the longest cell in the bound datatable.

I am facing a problem with Gridview control. I have created a Gridview1 which is having 3 button column that has been added at design time and some column can be added through the Datatable at runtime. At Design time GridView1 has 3 button column
At Runtime I do GridView1.Datasource=dt; //Now my gridview is having 7 columns i.e. 4 more columns added through datatable.
I can easily display that GridView1 on webpage but I dont want to show some column that I added through Datatable to the user.
When I try to hide that column, I get error like Index out of bound exception but when I hide button column I can able to do that easily.

I am using a datalist to display data from a database.Except for 1 column all the other column values are getting repeated so I am hiding all the other column values when the datalist repeats itself.However, the unique column value is not getting rendered properly because there are many line breaks in between.I am not using any web control to display the static text and I am not sure if that would help.I just want to improve the final display so that the datalist looks consistent.I am attaching my code.
