How To Link Layout Pages To Views MVC 3

View 2 RepliesI have a layout page (or master page) with MVC 3 and would like to make my views sort of content pages to this layout page, but alas I have no clue how to do this.
View 2 RepliesWe need dynamic data passed to our layout file, no matter what the child view is. For example, we display some user specific data in the header of the layout.
How can we pass this data to the layout view without each action having to supply it independently? Should we use a custom controller, or is there a better solution?
Im currently using a method that looks like the following code to add script and css files to the head of the Layout file.
[Code]....
My problem is that this is a static method meaning it persists the list of stylesheets and script files.
I need to do the same thing that this does but without keeping it persistant.
I need the lists to be remade on every request since they change from page to page what the look are on that specific page.
Is it possible to clear the lists on every request prior to adding the scripts that are needed or maybe after they have been rendered out?
Update:
The reason for not using a section, RenderPartial or RenderaActions is to prevent the same stylesheet or script file to be added more than once to the Layout file.
The site im building has a Layout_.cshtml with the basic layout. This in turn is used by a View that loops through a list of items and for each item a RenderAction is called that outputs the specific partial view for that item. These partial views sometimes need to add stylesheets and scripts.
As there can be needed to add many different scripts and stylesheets from different partial views a global list for styles and scripts were the only way i thought this could be done so there is a global place to check if a script is allready added to the collection or not and then render them all at once in the order they were added.
Update 2:
The real question is how to do the same kind of function (a global list) but without using a static Extension method.
My requirement was to share master files among diff projects i read this doc [URL] so i use this technique to share msster pages among my diff projects in a soln but i dnt know how to reference such shared master page as if i use such
<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" MasterPageFile="../masterPages/masterInvGen.Master"
I would like to use the _ViewStart page to set the master page (layout) used by the views. I have only two different layouts. One for the homepage and one for the other pages (but that may change)I was hoping to add a dynamic property to the ViewModel object in the home page's controller method and then check for it. Something like this_ViewStart =
[Code]....
And in the HomeController Index() add this
ViewModel.IsHomePage = true;
Don't get me wrong, I don't want anyone to write code for me, I just want to know what I'll need to implement. I'll detail what I need: Ex: Facebook page. If I'm at my profile's page I have one type of view, I can edit all my data, see even not set data and add more information. If I'm visiting a friend's page I can only see what he wants me to and interact with his pages as far as he allowed me.
Ex2: One user posted info on some blog. He and all the people with privileges can edit that info, the other can only read and post comments as their permissions allow. Was I clear enough? I wasn't able to find Google references because I don't know the name of this technique and the keywords I typed didn't take me anywhere.
I'm working on a webforms aspx app (not MVC) and I'm not sure if I should just create separate pages or somehow make multiple views on the same aspx page for the following scenario: Basically, I need to give the user the option to view a set of data a few different ways (essentially different group by's from a data perspective)... the data is always the same, its just a matter of how to arrange on the page...
each way I need to present the data will essentially consist of 2 repeaters, one nested inside the other. The outer repeater will display a nice header section with the nested repeater showing the list of items under that heading. view by book title (title is outer repeater, with the book list being the nested repeater, yes, multiple books with same title for this example - the app has nothing to do with books, this is just to illustrate)
Book Title: A Good Story

Or, view books by publisher (here the publisher would be the outer repeater and the list, with different fields compared to first view, is the nested repeater.

so what do I do here? Just making separate pages is simple and would work, but is there something else I should be considering? There will be 3 different views, so 3 pages total if I went that route. Something is making me think I should be doing this all within one aspx page? maybe just toggling the visible property of the repeater controls? but then I was thinking each of these repeater controls is databound, and I assume even if they are not visible they still incurred database hits to get the data, right? and that could be bad?
I need to create different page views for different types of users. I already asked that here: How to create pages with different permissions' views And even though Aldeel's answer works, it does not seem the best solution for me. I'll explain why. I need to show different views but it's not only like that. Each user can have access to different parts of the page.
Imagine a page 'X' with this structure
Field A
Field B
Field C
Field D
When user U1 from group G1 visit page X the system checks the DB for that group's permission on page X. User U1 can see Field A and Field B, but only edit Field A. User U2 that is set to no group visits page X. The system checks for his permissions on page X. User U2 can see and edit all fields. When user U3 from group G2 visit page X the system checks the DB for that group's permission on page X. User U3 can see Field C and Field D, but can not edit any.
I coudn't find a way to do that instead of filling ViewData with lots of data about that specific user's permission. In my example there are only 4 fields, but in my current project I have no screen with less than 20 fields. So I guess you can see how ugly and not productive that is. The idea is similar to a social network, as I said (facebook example). When a user visiting UserX's page can only see what UserX has allowed him to.
Say if i have a master page in that i have a button if user clicks on the button he should be redirected to new asp page how can i do that.
View 4 RepliesI have a search page (Search.aspx) with a search textbox. I would also like to add a search box to my homepage (Default.aspx) so that the viewer can immediately start searching.
I am aware I could do this by adding the search box to the Master template and using a ContentPlaceHolder, however I don't wish to do this for two reasons:
- The width of the Search.aspx textbox is quite wide - too wide for Default.aspx (the location I have for it)
- I am not yet convinced that I want this search box to be present on ALL my pages.
- I am considering using different AJAX Watermark Extender texts for the two search boxes.
How can I link the two textboxes with VB.NET? I want to be able to:
- Type a keyword into the Default.aspx search textbox, press the Return key (there is no Search button on
Default.aspx but there is in Search.aspx) and be taken straight to Search.aspx with the returned search results!
- Have the keywords transferred to the search textbox in Search.aspx so that they are sitting there waiting for me when Default.aspx takes me there.
.net and I love it already,how to make my LOGO (not image just a text) on my website clickable as back to home link but ONLY on some pages? I have the logo text on my Site.master page but as soon as I make the logo as a link then the logo will be clickable even though I am already on the home page which is pointless.
.net so please no black magic explanation ok?)
I have create a page with out link to master page. I want to edit this page to connect to master page. How do I do that?
again with another explanation
I'm using add content page to add page connected to master pages
If I create pages with out add content page how do i add this page to master pages;
I've got menu in my ASP MVC project, and can when I use
<li><%= Html.ActionLink("My", "My")%></li>
it redirects me to .../Home/My
and if I got
<li><%= Html.ActionLink("My", "My", "ZZZ")%></li>
it redirects me to .../ZZZ/My
the problem is I've got some pages out of MVC , with simple Inherits and they are in the root so I need to got to /My.aspx
How can I redirect to /My.aspx in my MVC menu ?
I've been rewriting my page into a master page for a bit now, problem I have is that I want the current page I'm in to be highlighted in the link.If you go to my website now gabriel-g.net and click on any menu item, it will let you know what current page you're on by staying underlined/highlighted.How can I accomplish this dynamic change in a master page -without having to recreate the menu in every page- with content holders?
View 1 RepliesI'm creating a website where I want people not to be able to create link to certain pages.The site work like this: The user do a serch for a document and click the link to view it, then he can view the document. If the user somehow adds the URL to favorites he should not be able to view the document when he at some time later tries to view the document. In addition if the user sends the URL to other people they should not be able to view the document.
View 6 RepliesI'm currently using ASP.NET MVC 2 and the spark view engine. The main master page (application.spark) contains all of the CSS link tags that need to be present for all pages (global stuff). However, I have some content pages that have page specific CSS tags and currently I'm just sticking the link tag in the body as something like:
<content name="MainContent">
<!-- page specific csss -->
<link rel="stylesheet" href="/Content/css/page_specific.css" />
My problem is that when the page renders, this tag ends up in the which is not where it needs to be. Is there a solution for this?
I had was to check the controller in the Application.spark page and write out which page specific css file is required for that particular controller, however, that solution doesn't seem to scale well and I would imagine there is some way of creating the link in the child page and having it render where it's supposed to by the browser.
I am learning MultiView control.Here are question:I added 5 views in the MultiView but all views are tight together. I can not drag and drop another control such as text boxes or labels into view area.
View 15 RepliesI have an MVC view that contains a number of partial views. These partial views are populated using partial requests so the controller for the view itself doesn't pass any data to them. Is it possible to reload the data in one of those partial views if an action was triggered in another? For example, one partial view has a jqGrid and I want to refresh the data in another partial view when a user selects a new row in this grid. Is there a code example for this scenario (in C#) that I can look at to see what am I doing wrong? I am using ajax calls to trigger a new request but non of the partial views are refreshed so I am not sure if the issue is with the routing, the controller,
View 1 RepliesConsider the following scenario.You have a Edit action (GET and POST) for an entity that multiple pages link into (GET EDIT). What is the best way of getting back to the page that linked to the edit action? Adding a returnTo url in the query?
Example, from MyCart/3 we have a edit product link
/Product/Edit/5?returnTo=MyCart/3 (but url encoded)
And from Producer/45 we have this link
/Product/Edit/5?returnTo=Producer/45
Is there a better way to do this?
I use freetextbox control to rich text.When I insert an image with imagegalley it creates a link:
<A>http://www.freetextbox.com "target = _blank> FreeTextBox </ A>.
i want to implement partial views in asp.net
View 1 RepliesHere is my requirement -
1. I need to load a user control on link click event of a link button during postback of aspx page.
2. On button click event of a save button on that aspx page, I need to read the selected values from that user control on further postback.
If I write the loadcontrol code in link_click event, the control is not recognized at all in the button_click event. When I shift it to page_init and execute only during not postback, the user control loads with default values.
I have set link color as red and vlink as yellow and green color for alink but the color shown for links is always green for visted and active link?
View 5 RepliesAfter submitting a form, the user is presented with a link to a pdf document. The link is straight to the document, it is not streamed.
If the user right-clicks and chooses 'save link as,' the document saves and opens fine. However, if the user just clicks on the link, the browser takes a very long time to respond (I'm going to guess it's 3 minutes) and then adobe reader gives the following error:
"the file is damaged and could not be repaired"
This is in Chrome v5, ASP.NET 3.5 and the link is returned inside an UpdatePanel.
I want to create link thumbnails and get link contents like facebook in asp.net, but i couldn't find any resource.
