LinqDataSource - Filtering For Null Values?
Aug 19, 2010
I am writing an ASP.Net web application. I have listview, it's datasource is a LinqDataSource. In my database, I have a staff table and I am trying filter for records by their team using a dropdownlist. This works fine, until I select "All" in the dropdownlist. It returns all staff except for the ones where the teamID is null. How can I return the records where teamID is null?
This is my code:
<asp:ListView ID="ListView1" runat="server" DataSourceID="ldsStaff" DataKeyNames="staffID">
<LayoutTemplate>
<table>
<tr>
<th>Name</th>
<th>Team</th>
</tr>
<tr>
<td> </td>
<td><asp:DropDownList ID="ddlTeamFilter" runat="server" DataSourceID="ldsTeams" DataTextField="Team" DataValueField="TeamID" AppendDataBoundItems="true" AutoPostBack="true">

I have three tables in database:
ARTICLE with fields like ID_Article, Title, etc. and also a FK ID_Author
CATEGORY with fields ID_Category, Name
CATEGORYTOARTICLE with fields ID_Article, ID_Category
Now I have a page that shows all Articles of a given Category. Inside there is a GridView.
[Code]....
The ID of the viewed Category is passed via QueryString.
How to access the fields of Article table so that I can create columns for them in GridView? I tried using Eval("Article.Title") but it keeps saying that "DataBinding: 'konserwatyzm.db.CategoryToArticle' does not contain a property with the name 'Article'."

I use LinqDataSource and need to make insert not from any data-bound controls like formView (just by pressing button on page).
In SqlDataSource I can set InsertParameters like this
<InsertParameters>
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlPrice" DefaultValue="0" Name="Price"
PropertyName="SelectedValue" Type="Int16" />
<asp:ControlParameter ControlID="ddlDisc" DefaultValue="0" Name="Discount"
PropertyName="SelectedValue" Type="Int16" />
</InsertParameters>
and then just call Insert().
But in LinqDataSource we don't have method Insert() taking no papameters so I need to create collection with values I want to insert.

I have dropdownlist of dates and depending on the date that the user selects from list, I would like to filter records that fall between the startyear and finishyear columns in the datasource. (My the problem is that I do not know how to declare the Startyear and Endyear from the query in the code as they appear underlined - probably the BETWEEN syntax is wrong too).
yYear = DropDownList1.Text
Using connection As New SqlConnection("Data Source=CHRIS-PCSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=TorGHL;Integrated Security=True")
Dim cmd As String
cmd = "SELECT BarDetails.*, MenuHeadingId AS Expr1 FROM BarDetails WHERE (MenuHeadingId = 2)" & "WHERE " & yYear & " BETWEEN " & "(" &
StartYear & ")" & " AND " & "(" & EndYear & ")"
connection.Open()
Dim dapubcb As New SqlDataAdapterDim sqlcomm
As
New SqlCommand(cmd, connection)
dapubcb.SelectCommand = sqlcomm
Dim dspubcb As New DataSet("BarDetails")
dapubcb.Fill(dspubcb, "BarDetails")

I have a standard gridview, with the standard paging and sorting interface enabled.The application holds appointments for three organisational units, with a maximum of 3000 appointment records being returned across all three units. The appointment records are quite small.
The choice I am faced with is to:
1. Have an Org Unit dropdown which returns to the datasource on change of selection and at inital databind, and returns appointment records for one org unit at a time i.e. approx 1000 records.
2. Have the objectdatasource return all 3000 appointment records for all org units at initial databind, and filter the objectdatasource by org unit on change of selection, thereby saving a trip to the datasource.
I guess the question boils down to identifying the point at which querying the datasource by org unit is more efficient than filtering the records returned by org unit.
Is 3000 records a lot for a gridview to be paging and sorting etc.

I have a typical gridview/formview master control setup. When I try to update or insert I don't get any errors but it also doesn't work. When I try to insert data all I get are null values and when I update, none of the values are updated. The formview looks like its working, but just doesn't. The primary key is an identity and it auto-increments by one.

protected void rptNavigation_ItemDataBound(object sender, System.Web.UI.WebControls.RepeaterItemEventArgs e){
if (!((e.Item.ItemType == ListItemType.AlternatingItem) || (e.Item.ItemType == ListItemType.Item)))
{return;
}string Name = string.Empty;
if (IsDBNull(e.Item.DataItem["FullName"])) {
Name = String.Empty;}
else {Name = (string)(e.Item.DataItem["FullName"]);}
Literal ltlLiteral = (Literal)(e.Item.FindControl("ltlLiteral"));
ltlLiteral.Text = Name.ToString();
I get error for IsDbNull - Error 1 The name 'IsDBNull' does not exist in the current context. What's the best way to check for null values returned from db? also I get errors on both lines where (e.Item.FindControl(ltlLiteral")); is present ERror: Cannot apply indexing with [] to an expression of type 'object'

I have the following code
public class ProductDetails
{
private string _productid;
public string ProductID
{
get { return _productid; }
}
private string _description;
public string Description
{
get { return _description; }
}
private string _image;
public string Image
{
get { return _image; }
}
public ProductDetails(string productid, string description, string image)
{
_productid = productid;
_description = description;
_image = image;
}
}
public class DataAccess
{
private static string connectionString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["ConnectionString"].ConnectionString;
public ProductDetails GetProductDetails()
{
SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection(connectionString);
SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("ProductDetails", con);
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;
string productid = HttpContext.Current.Request.QueryString["productid"];
cmd.Parameters.Add(new SqlParameter("productid", SqlDbType.NVarChar)).Value = productid;
con.Open();
SqlDataReader reader = cmd.ExecuteReader();
reader.Read();
ProductDetails pro = new ProductDetails(
(string)reader["ProductID"], (string)reader["Description"], (string)reader["Image"]);
reader.Close();
return pro;
}
}
protected void PopulateControls()
private DataAccess da = new DataAccess();
{
ProductDetails product = da.GetProductDetails();
if (product.Description == String.Empty)
{
lblDescription.Visible = false;
}
else
{
lblDescription.Text = product.Description;
}
}
In the last piece i want to check if the Description field is null or empty in order to hide the label control but i get an error if i write: if (product.Description == DBNull.Value) and can only use ring.Empty. But i want to check for NULL values as well..

I have a number of nullable DateTime fields (Entity Framework model), and in my MVC view, I want to display custom text when the value is null. I would normally use the C# ? or ?? operators, but these can't be used unless I make all output occur in a response.write. Also, I need to handle existing DataAnnotations (like format string). It's all pointing to a helper method, or an extension method on Html. I am hoping there is a DataAnnotation attribute that I missed that covers this scenario.
Is there a way to use the <%: operator and have custom text for null values?

Code:
SELECT one, two, three, four FROM tblFixedLine_onenet_callLog WHERE (one LIKE '%' + ISNULL(@one,'') + '%') AND (two LIKE '%' + ISNULL(@two, '') + '%') AND (three LIKE '%' + ISNULL(@three, '') + '%') AND (four LIKE '%' + ISNULL(@four, '') + '%') ORDER BY one, two, three, four
@one, @two, @three and @four are textboxes on my ASP.NET page all of which by default have no value(therefore i assumed NULL).If i test the SQL in the VS2005 SQL Configuration (and put the values in manually) it works but the ASP page returns no results... i assume therefore the Textbox value is "" not Null.

I need to pass some values around using session state. My approach is to first check if my session variable is null and if it is not, then proceed with my C# logic. Is that correct? Will my Session variable ever contain garbage in it, like a corrupted string? Or will I be guaranteed that it is null if not explicitly set.
if(Session["MyVariable"]!=null {
// Do some logic }

For example in my datalist if Eval("OptionJ").Tostring = Null I would like the function GetVisible to set visibility of the radio button to false like so:
<input name="Q<%#Eval("ID")%>" type="radio" value="J" visible="<%# GetVisible(Eval("OptionJ").ToString()) %>">
<%#Server.HtmlEncode(Eval("OptionJ").ToString())%>
</option><br />
I then have a codebehind function like so:
Protected Function GetVisible(ByVal Evalresult As String) As String
If Evalresult = Nothing Then
Return "False"
Else
Return "True"
End If
End Function
I have also tried checking EvalResult = String.empty
In the outputted html the visible status is being set to false...
<input name="Q3" type="radio" value="J" visible="False">
But it is still displayed on the page!

Is there a better way to write the code below? I have quite a few blocks that are similar, and this is making the code in the Viewpage very messy to work with. The data value with the associated label only needs to be output when certain conditions are met, which is almost always if the value is not null. The options I can think is to use a response.write to atleast minimize the usage of the ASP script tags, or to format the webpage is such a way that the label displays with an appropriate n/a type value.
<% if (myData.Balance != null)
{ %>
Balance: <%= String.Format("{0:C}", (myData.Balance))%>
<% } %>
