MVC :: How To Add A Class To EditorFor When Classes Already Exist Because Of Unobtrusive
Nov 25, 2010
I'm trying to add a `Class` to the `EditorFor` Helper inside an `EditorTemplate`.
The problem is that because I'm using Unobtrusive Validation, the input element already has classes assigned to it.
Here is my EditorTemplate
[Code]....
And here is the output <input class="text-box single-line" id="BirthDate" name="BirthDate" type="text" value="08/08/1980" />
You can see here that the `datepicker` class has not been added, yet the "value" has been properly formatted.
Basically I can see that the `EditorTemplate` is working, but the `Class` is not being appended to the rest of the classes on the `<input>` element. Do any of you know how to fix this?

I am following the Nerd Dinner tutorial as I'm learning ASP.NET MVC, and I am currently on Step 3: Building the Model. One part of this section discusses how to integrate validation and business rule logic with the model classes. All this makes perfect sense. However, in the case of this source code, the author only validates one class: Dinner.
What I am wondering is, say I have multiple classes that need validation (Dinner, Guest, etc). It doesn't seem smart to me to repeatedly write these two methods in the partial class:
[code]....
This doesn't "feel" right, but I wanted to check with SO to get opinions of individuals smarter than me on this. I also tested it out, and it seems that the partial keyword on the OnValidate method is causing problems (understandably so). This doesn't seem possible to fix (but I could very well be wrong).

I am working on an ASP.NET MVC 2 project with VS 2010 and out of nothing I get the following errors on my views:
The name 'Html' does not exist in the current context
The name 'Model' does not exist in the current context
It is like it is not recongnizing the MVC Html and Model classes.
I have System.Web.Mvc on my references and on Web.Config I have:

suppose i have Class A with some properties and Attributes, and Class B with the same, how can i merge these 2 class Properties and properties Attributes into 1 class at runtime, or better is how can i add these 2 classes into a a third class as properties of this new class with their Fields, Properties, Methods, etc... at Runtime ?
using reflection or the News .NET 4.0 Dynamic or expando Object
what i want is to create a dynamic ViewModel for MVC, where other classes are in some other assemblies, and i want them to be part of the model with their Datavalidation attributes. and i don't know how many or what exactly these classes are goanna be, so i want to iterate through assemblies and choose them then add them to the main View Model

I am used to making separate Business Object and List<> classes for my DB tables. Sometimes I just have a basic task in hand as displaying a list of year for a search box or having some values in a drop down.
Right now I am ending up with a lot of separate classes and List classes<> for these basic operations.
How can I make a single class for some basic tasks as these by using generics? I want to have single class for some methods like get current year, employee names, Department Name/Code, Title etc. I am using .NET 2.0.
Edit
After some searching, I found that I can achieve similar tasks by creating a DTO namespace.
What I don't get right now is how to create multiple classes inside my DTO class. Say 1 class for just returning 'year', One for 'Employee Name/Code' and so on inside the single DTO class.

How do I model the following using Castle ActiveRecord?
I have two classes, Customer and Task.
I would like to reuse a third class, Note, stored in a Collection in each of the Customer and Task classes.
[Code]....
I would then like to be able to pass the Notes collection to a Gridview, Listview or Repeater in the relevant ASP.Net page for the Customer or Task classes.

I've got an ASP.net project with a folder containing some dll's. I have referenced the DLL's from the folder.
I've modified one of the DLL's (Added a new class). I get build errors saying that the new class does not exist. When I add the reference the build errors go away in the Error List window. However, When I build the project the errors come back again.
I've set up a test project and referenced the DLL's and can access the new class with no problems so I know the class exists in the dll.
Currently Tearing my hair out!
EDIT: Forgot to mention I've also checked the refresh files and they seem to be pointing to the correct location

Do we have to do something special to have ASP.NET partial classes aware of controls that are declared in our user control's base classes? The partial classes keep generating declarations for controls in the base class which mean the controls in the base class get hidden and are null.

I lifted some nice code to handle memberships, but I want to add a customer specific field. My issue is how to reference my class from the inline c# code.
[Code]....
The problem is the line csUserProperties.AddNew(intUserId, lngCustomerId); -- I get the error "The name 'csUserProperties' does not exist in the current context. I have <%@ Import Namespace="csUserProperties" %> at the top of the file. I also tried everything with no namespace in the class below.

I am new to LINQ. when we drag tables we get a dbml file and designer file.
For example DataClasses1.dbml and DataClasses1.designer.cs.
Once we have them then we can start using our LINQ Queries.
In my company project I do not see this designer files and instead there are .tt files which were used as templates to greate ABC.generated.cs files. Is this same as designer class?

I don't know if this has to do with how FindControl works or how scope works. But my base class is having a hard time seeing the fields of child classes. Currently I'm planning have the derived class set a property in the base class, but there are a lot of derived classes, so that isn't a very attractive solution.

I'm curious as to what people consider better practice, between duplicating model structure in the view model and using a mapping tool to move data between the two, or aggregate the model inside the view model, i.e. have a property on the view model class that is a reference to the actual model. Which is considered a better approach in general?

I am learning MVC using the v2 release with Entity Framework v4. Let's say I have 3 objects Game, Points and Players. They are related in the following manner:Game has points and the Points can have a player associated with them ( 1 Game to many Points and a Point object can have one Player).
I am attempting to use the EditTemplates feature in MVC2 to render my views. In my Game Edit view I want to have the basic Game object information editable, and also the related Points objects. Currently I am utilizing "`<%= Html.EditorForModel() %>`"(Which seems pretty slow) to render the Edit View and then I have a specific Game and Point EditTemplates.
The data renders correctly and is editable for both the Game and Point information. When I go to perform the update and submit the form I receive the "Game" object in my Update ActionResult. The basic properties are populated for the Game object but any deep properties such as Points are not; they appear as null. If I look at the Request.Form variables in debug I can see the Points fields are being passed to the server but do not place themselves back into the Game object.
In my Game EditTemplate I am using the following to render the Points objects:
<%= Html.EditorFor(c => c.Points) %>
My Points EditTemplate looks like: [code]...
why this is rendering as "Points.Points[index] instead of Points[index]? I tried messing with the parameters in the EditFor:
<%= Html.EditorFor(c => c.Points,null,"Points") %>
but then the inputs render as Points.Points[index]

So I have two nested view models, CreditCard -> BillAddress. I have a view, "EditBilling", that has EditorFor(CreditCard). The CreditCard EditorTemplate has EditorFor(BillAddress), and the BillAddress EditorTemplate has EditorFor(BillState).
The end result is a select list with id "CreditCard_BillAddress_BillState".
I need to reference this in javascript, thus need to know the ID. In other situations, with non-nested ViewModels, I have used the following code:
$('#<%= ViewData.ModelMetadata.PropertyName %>_BillState')
The problem here is that the ModelMetadata.PropertyName property is only aware of the current property, not the parent(s). So I end up with the following:
$('#BillAddress_BillState')
How does one go about getting the client ID of nested strongly typed helpers?

Just found out this problem. Upgraded by site to jQuery 1.5.1. I had some cascading dropdowns populating via some very simple code like this:
[Code]....
This code no longer runs with jQuery 1.5.1 AND unobtrusive validation active. Fails also with jquery 1.5.0. Works fine with jquery 1.4.4.
