MVC Application Fires Session_Start Multiple Times For A Single Session

Jul 29, 2010

We have an MVC.NET application that encounters fatal errors when it restarts. In our Session_Start event handler, we add the session id to a dictionary. In the Session_End handler, we remove it. Consider the following sequence of requests:

GET home.mvc
<application restarts>
GET main.css
GET banner.jpg
GET somedata.mvc
...

Because of the way the application is architected, this sort of sequence happens fairly frequently if you do a rebuild while the application is open in a browser window. That wouldn't be terribly concerning except that I see it in production environments too. For example, it will occur (albeit rarely) when you edit web.config.

The requests following the restart are all due to links in the home page or AJAX calls from JavaScript.

What I observe is that .NET handles the first 5 requests in parallel. Each such request causes it to fire the Session_Start event. After a short time, it fires the Session_End event 3 times. To be clear, each Session_Start corresponds to the exact same session. They all have the same session id and the IsNewSession property is true for all session state objects. Also, the Session_End events do not correspond to the session being killed. The session persists, along with any data stored in session state.

I need to either prevent it from firing Session_Start more than once or figure out how to tell when Session_End doesn't really mean that the session has ended.

Asp.net - To Prevent A Single User Account Logging On Multiple Times In A Webforms Application

Dec 16, 2010

I am looking at how best to prevent a single user account logging on multiple times in a webforms application. I know that MembershipUser.IsOnline exists, but I've read a few forum and blog entries suggesting that this can be unreliable, particularly in scenarios where a user closes a browser (without logging out) and attempts to logon with a different machine or browser.I looked at implementing a last past the post type system; when a user logs on older users are simply kicked off. It seems that FormsAuthentication.Signout() only works for the current user.

SQL Reporting :: Using ReportViewer.LocalReport.Render() Method To Export Single Report Multiple Times?

Oct 21, 2010

I'm using the ReportViewer control on my .aspx page which displays a single report based on various user parameter selections. Dropdown2 is dependent on the DropDown1 selection (i.e. the user selects Unit A from DropDown1 and that results in 10 selections under Dropdown2, or the user selects Unit B from DropDown1 and that results in 15 selections under DropDown2, and so on). The user makes the selections, clicks the "Run Report" button, and the report displays as expected. The user then can export to Excel or PDF

I've received a request to allow users to run the report for all possible selections and export to their desired format rather than having to run the report for each separate DropDown1 and DropDown2 selection. So in other words, they don't even want to see the report on the screen, they just want to be able to click a button that runs the report for all possible parameter selections and export it to a single Excel or PDF document.

Custom Validator For MaxLength Property Of Textarea

May 16, 2010

I have quite a few text area's on my page and am wanting to limit the number of characters for each one. However each one should be able to have its own maxlength (i.e. one could be 20 characters and the other could be 100 characters). My validation on the page is all done using custom validation as the built in validation of .NET is not extensible enough for me to display my validation errors how I want to display them. So this is what im wanting to do:

Make a custom validatorPass a MaxLength value from the custom validator into the javascript function, this value must also be accessible from the code behindI can then run client side and server side validation on each textbox control. The problem I am having is passing a MaxLength value to client side script and to server side. Is there a property on custom validators which I can use to pass values around? For instance in Javascript I would want the value of the MaxLength and also the id of the Div which will show the characters remaining, and server side I would need to know the MaxLength. I have done lots of research on this and cannot seem to find an answer.

C#. : Custom Validator (ValueToCompare & ControlToValidate Property Errors) / How To Fix It

Jun 22, 2010

I've searched a fair bit round and tried a number of potential solutions, suggested on their respective threads on various sites, to which none have worked for me.

My objective is to make sure the date entered, and to be stored, is not 'less than' (before) the present datei.e. Booking a reservation for a restaurant.

The first is:

"The ControlToValidate property of 'cvDate' cannot be blank..."

I've tried specifying it in page_load and .aspx source, the same has happened in both, in addition to ValueToCompare. I cant understand why it cant detect it?

C# (ControltoValidate):

Custom Server Controls :: Loading Same Assembly For The Multiple Times?

Jan 25, 2010

Can you tell me how it is better to load classes from the same assembly for multiple times? I will explain:

I have a usercontrol that loads the class from assembly A.DLL using (MyAbstractClass)Assembly.Load(path).CreateInstance(type) each time requested page loads. The control can appear on the page many times (about 20-30) and each of them can load the different type from A.DLL...so if control exists on page 20 times, 20 times (MyAbstractClass)Assembly.Load(path).CreateInstance(type)
has been executed.

The question is performance...

Does ASP.NET caches DLLs already loaded dynamically? After first (MyAbstractClass)Assembly.Load(path).CreateInstance(type)and first IO, will ASP.NET load A.DLL from cache on other executions ? Or I need to implement some kind of assemblies caching myself?

If I need to implement caching myself, what is the best and fastest way to do it?

Web Forms :: Can't Have Multiple Instances Of A Custom Validator

Feb 8, 2011

I have the current block of code inside an OnPreRender method of a validator that is inheriting from BaseValidator. If I have one instance of the validator this works fine, but if there are multiple instances the javascript flakes out. As it stands the acutal evaluation function has to be rendered on a per instance basis. I know it's kind of a drop in the bucket, but I'd like to register the block below just once instead of giving each instance a unique key to register with.

Does A Custom Validator Have To Be Used With The Validator Callout Extender

Jul 6, 2010

I have a validator callout extender that works, it shows the callout box. But, it does a postback. It didn't do a post back the first time I clicked the button but it did for subsequent times. I read on the AJAX site that a custom validator must be used with this for it to work. I'm currently using this with a required field and regular expression validator. It works, the callout appears, but it doesn't work every time with out the post back.I posted this to see if there is a way to get this to work with a required field and regular expression validator, with out using a custom validator. I'm using the newest release of the toolkit, so I thought the documentation may be old, since the callout is appearing.

SelectMethod In ObjectDatasource Getting Called Multiple Times With Multiple Datapagerfield?

Oct 7, 2010

so here is the setup. I am building a page that has a listview, a datapager, and 3 datapagerfield (2 x NextPreviousPagerField, 1 x NumericPagerField), and a objectdatasource to tide all of this together.

It was all working fine until I put a breakpoint into the SelectMethod specified in the objectdatsource control. It seems like that for each datapagerfield control, it is calling the selectmethod and selectcount method. Hence, whenever a user paged, it calls the database 6 times instead of 2 (I don't have caching turned on atm). If I remove one datapagerfield, it will remove 2 calls.

Now this is build in asp.net 3.5 SP1 in VS2008. When I copied the same code files to a asp.net 4.0 VS2010 solution, it duplicate call seems to be gone.

Is this a bug in asp.net 3.5 SP1?

Data Controls :: File Type And Extension Validation For Multiple File Upload Controls Using Custom Validator

May 7, 2015

I was referring muddasar's one of the article for the validation. Below is my code and i am trying to validate the file upload selected file format on the submit button. I have 4 upload control and  fu1 is mandatory field and others are not mandatory fields. Though i need to validate all the four uploads if the files have been selected. My full sample code is below for easy testing,

<asp:FileUpload runat="server" ID="fu1" />
<asp:Label ID="lblMessage1" runat="server"></asp:Label>
<asp:FileUpload runat="server" ID="fu2" />
<asp:Label ID="lblMessage2" runat="server"></asp:Label>

[code]...

I am doing slight mistake on the return to the main function. if i test indvidual function it works fine. whereas if i include the 4 functions in one function  with the return statement, it's not validating. goes to to the server.

I've been used some code I found on dotnetjunkies.com but the client-side validation didn't work. I've been attempting to modify it to get the client-side javascript validation to work with no luck. Basically, I compile the below code into a DLL and add it to my bin folder.

Forms Data Controls :: Using Multiple Tables Within A Single DataSet And Single SqlDataSource?

May 19, 2010

I have a stored procedure that returns 3 tables within the single recordset it returns. If I set a SqlDataSource to get data from this procedure, it works, but it only returns the first table. I want to have a GridView display the data from the 2nd or 3rd table using a SqlDataSource, but I can't figure out how to specify a particular table.

While there are some posts discussing this out there, I can't get a definitive answer about whether or not this is even possible (?). In a worst-case scenario, I can create another SP that only returns the 3rd table - but that creates a little maintenance headache that I would prefer to avoid.

As soon as Rainbow property is typed, user should get intellisense for list of number of colors. Then accordingly user can select list of those colors and assign a value to them.
