I get the follwowing exception while running my ASP.NET 1.1 web application. The Web application will call a web service which connects to to the DB server and returns the data to the application. This error occurs when we move the webservices and databases to new servers. I am able to connect to the DB server from web servers through SQL port.

On our company we have a intranet site which uses ASP classic to authenticate users before accesing the site. This site was working before but suddenly i throws an error which limits the users in accessing the intranet site. I made a debugger page in order to know the error of the application and it showed me this error [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. On my local machine the page is accessible on my (IIS server) the connectionstring in the web server and in my localhost are the same. I just can't figure out what's causing this problem.

Usually in sub-folder we will limit the access right to some roles and this feature requires pre-defined database schema.
However, if i still want to use this role feature of asp.net, but I do not like the pre-define database schema, I want to extract role information from my own database table and bind it to the role.

I have started learning ASP.net and SQL on and off the past month. I'm trying to make it so that when I select a user from a drop down box (SELECT [UserName], [UserId] FROM [vw_aspnet_Users]) that a label will then display the role next to the selected user. Just in case there is a better way to do it I want it so that the drop down selects the user, the label is just there to provide additional verification that it is the correct user and their current status (admin, moderator, user).
I then want to provide edit and delete buttons (but thats another story!)
I did think something like (SELECT aspnet_Roles.RoleName FROM aspnet_Roles WHERE aspnet_UsersInRoles.RoleId = aspnet_Roles.RoleId) would work but it produces an error.

I used Integrated Security for a database connection for the first time for a website. The website pool uses Network Service as a user. I added Network Service as a SQL Server user mapped to public, then allowed it access to my database as websiteuser. There are many aspnet_... roles to choose from. Any links out there that explains which ones to use? Do I just check them all since there's only one login coming from the website?

I have an existing ASPNET role/membership database created on SQLExpress 2005 (WIndows 2003 Server). I created it under the .NET 3 framework many years ago using the aspnet_regsql.exe application in full GUI mode.
I am setting up a new Windows 2008R2 server with .Net Framework 4 and SQL Server 2008R2. I don't want users to have to recreate accounts or create roles, etc.
So...
1. Should I backup the current database and import it into the new system, and if so do I even need to use the aspnet_regsql.exe application. (If so which version do I use, different aspnet_regsql.exe files exist in different directories (i.e., FrameWork, FrameWork64)
2. Should I just run aspnet_regsql.exe on its own and then somehow try to import the current data into those tables.
I am concerned that if I just import somehow the roles within SQL server will not be created properly.

Followed the code sample of Chapter 10 (Logging in) of the Book, Microsoft ASP.NET 2.0, I created an ASP.NET 3.5 website with Forms Authentication. The sample code used Website Administration Tool (WAT) to manage the users, roles, and authorization.When running in the ASP.NET Development server environment, I can first login, then click to open the links for each for the 3 roles.
However when running the sample code in the IIS server environment, I can login but can not open the links for the role subfolders.Clicking each link popped up an error message for opening a login.aspx from the specific subfolder. I don't have a Login.aspx file in each subfolder.The 3 role subfolders were configured as the virtual folders in the IIS Server. Why the sample code worked fine inASP.NET Development server environment, but got an error message from theIIS Server environment? Why an authenticated user can not open the subfolder homepage?

I am trying to create a Forms Authenticated site and have already used the aspnet_regsql tool to create the necessary logic in my SQL Server DB to hold my data. Now, I am looking to create a custom Membership, User and Role provider for my DB model. I was looking at the following video: [URL]
Now, I get the concept on how to go about it but I notice that this guy uses custom DB Procedures as to the ones that are generated by the aspnet_regsql tool. Can anyone direct me on where I can find info on how to go about building the Membership, User and Role provider class using the DB structure that aspnet_regsql generates? So much junk on google that I am having a hard time finding good guidance.

As I'm learning the ins and outs of ASP.NET user management, I've learned that the default in VS is for it to use a SQL Server Express .mdf file for the data it needs to save. This won't help me for when I deploy my site, as I'm running SQL Server 2008 R2 on my IIS 7.5 server. I know that I can run a command line tool to automatically create the db tables necessary for user management, and will do that on my development machine, but how do I tell my existing, in development code in VS to ignore the existing Express .mdf file and look at the newly created db tables?

I currently have this controller function:
public ViewResult Edit(int id)
{
//get user from id
var user = _adminRepository.GetUser(id);
return View(user);
}
This currently gives me an error on my view page if I attempt to edit an item with an id of 100, when there is no user with an id of 100 in the database. What's the best practice for handling this? Send them to a Create page, or show a friendly error message? Should that redirect functionality be within the controller function?

I have a table "assignments" with records that are assigned to multiple "users" by the "department" they belong to. Each user then can have it's own "status" for each assignment.
When the user logs-in i need to show all his assignments and the status.(but status record doesn't exist yet)
When a new assignment is created I don't want to have to create a new record relating the assignment to the user. I want the relationship to be by the department the user belongs to and the department the assignment was assigned to.
Only thing i can think of is when the user logs in to load the assignments that belong to the user's department then look thru all the records. For each record loop thru the status table. If a record exist show the the status. if it doesn't then make default value and when the users clicks to view the assignment a new status record will be added.
Only thing i don't like is looping thru the status records while looping thru all the assignments.
How else can I do it? I don't see how could join the assignments table and the status table if the status record doesn't exist yet.
tables:
[ASSIGNMENTS]
assignmentID
departmentID
assignment
[DEPARTMENT]
departmentID
department
[USERS]
userID
departmentID
user
[STATUS]
userID
assignemntID
status
BTW, I'm using Linq-to-SQL

I'm trying to create a HTTP handler to handle all requests to a folder but I only want it to fire if the files requested don't exist (EG: Request comes in for file X, if X exists I'd like to serve the file, otherwise the handler should deal with it).The files will only be static content, not scripts themselves, which I assume makes it a bit easier but I can't seem to find anything that will do the trick... Anyone have any ideas? I assume it can be done since the IIS7 rewrite module can manage it, but I can't see how...Edit Just to clarify... the handler is the typical case and it is not an error-handling routine but actually delivering appropriate content. I just want the ability to add new files to the folder either as separate things or as overloads to what the handler would deliver.

I am inserting a record and want to set the value for a foreign key but I am getting an error - I initally thought that it would insert it if it didn't exist but I must be wrong and want to confirm that I need to check all values and make a record for them if they don't exist... here's what I am trying to do - does his make sense?
var newAllPart = new Part();
newAllPart.PartNumber = partNumber;
newAllPart.Manufacturer.ManufacturerName = partManufacturer; // error here if the Manufacturer doesn't exists already
newAllPart.PartType.PartTypeName = partType;
newAllPart.Category.CategoryName = partCategory;
newAllPart.DateCreated = DateTime.Now;
newAllPart.UserCreated = userCreated;
newAllPart.Package.PackageName = partPackage;
newAllPart.Statuse.StatusName = partStatus;
localDB.Parts.InsertOnSubmit(newAllPart);
localDB.SubmitChanges();
