Disabling ViewState For A Server Control?

Apr 1, 2010

I thought disabling ViewState for a server control would cause this control not to keep its state after a postback. I thought the same would happen if I disable ViewState for the whole page.

However, I tried to create an example to show this to a colleague and was puzzled when a textbox on a page would keep is state (in this case its Text property) after one or more postbacks, even when ViewState is disabled everywhere (both at Page level and Server Control level). Please see the code below:

[Code]....

I can keep pressing the Post back! button and every value typed on the textbox is still there after the postback(s). I'm using VS 2008.

After this example I now assume I don't understand ViewState as I thought I was.

I'm using the asp:ChangePassword control. I would like to disable the ability for the user to enter a new username but the default shows the current user's UserName and allows editing. Ideally, I would be able to find the child control in the ChangePassword control that is the UserName textbox and set Enable=false.

Disabling Viewstate On Drop Down List Causes?

Sep 13, 2010

I have a page that has two drop down lists on it and a button. All controls sit in an update panel. The first drop down list (ddl1) contains a lot of values which caused a huge viewstate so I disabled viewstate on it. In the page oninit event I populate the drop down list every time the page is posted back. This all seems to work fine, it shows all the values and I can access the selected value in my event handler.

ddl1 has the autopostback attribute set to true so when its value changes the second drop down list (ddl2) is populated with some values that depend on the selection in ddl1. This also works fine, the values in ddl2 change when I select a value in ddl1.

ddl2 does not have viewstate disabled. The button that sits under my two drop down lists is disabled by default and becomes enabled when the value of ddl2 is changed to anything except string.empty. This is where I run into problems. ddl2 does an autopostback too but it seems to lose the selected index/value. When I'm in my code to check whether to enable or disable the button the selected index is always 0 and the selected value is string.Empty.

If I enable viewstate on ddl1 this all works fine. Could anyone point me to what I'm doing wrong?

Here is the code executed by the ddl2 postback:

State Management :: Disabling ViewState For DropDownList And Using AutoPostback With SelectedIndexChanged?

Dec 3, 2010

The sites I mantain are using way too much ViewState and I'd like to reduce that so the size of the page is reduced. I've done a lot to remedy this but I have an issue relating to DropDown lists that use AutoPostbacks.I have a dropdown list with a lot of list items and a good part of the ViewState usage is to hold the list item data. If I disable ViewState and set the AutoPostBack property to true, the page will post back and in the page load I am trying to repopulate the dropdown list with cached data. However, it seems that the SelectedIndexChanged event doesn't fire when EnableViewState="false".Is it possible to make this work without enabling ViewState for the drodown list?

Web Forms :: URL Rewriting Causing Validation Of Viewstate MAC Failed?

Nov 22, 2010

Has anyone encountered while using Context.RewriteUrl in global.asax causes this error: Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster ?

Here is the scenario, let's say I have a url

http://mysite.com/admin/login.aspx instead typing the whole url in address, user can type either
http://mysite.com/admin/ or http://mysite.com/admin which all end up at http://mysite.com/admin/login.aspx. When a user type http://mysite.com/admin and entered correct login info, and press login button it gets the error above. How can I resolve this? Tried setting EnableValidateRequest to false and EnableViewstateMac to false also even I do not want to use this approach and still does not work.

AJAX :: Update Panel Causing Unwanted Viewstate?

Jan 5, 2010

I have a gridview which has a checkbox column which are set to automatically postback. When a checkbox is clicked, a partial postback occurs, and the associated record is displayed to the user (this is the required function).My problem is regarding when a user clicks a number of checkboxes in quick succession. I have got ajax request queuing working fine, so each checkbox postback is eventually dealt with. However as the gridview also postsback, it resets its viewstate on which boxes are checked, removing some of the boxes which the user may have checked.I've attempted to take off the viewstate on the gridview which seems to achieve nothing, neither does placing the gridview in a separate update panel.

Microsoft's Implementation Of Viewstate Not Causing "Confirm Form Resubmission" Message

Feb 1, 2011

My ViewState implementation causes "Confirm Form Resubmission" dialog to appear each time I press 'back' button, but when I create test site using microsoft's aspx their viewstate isn't causing such problems. What should I know to prevent my browser from showing "Confirm Form Resubmission"? I've found an interesting resource here, the problem described in terms of browser caching, if the page is cached than it won't make a post at all, now it is interesting how to make my page cachable by default.

Now here is the weird thing. First i am running it locally on the built in vs2008 web server.I load my control in fine, do a postback from a linkbutton, locally on my machine it all works fine, no issue.However when it goes onto my host, it falls over with the message:

Security :: Postbacks With Authentication Causing Errors?

Jan 28, 2010

After adding personalization and authentication to my site, I was getting pitched out of my application( which is on a hosted server), and sent back to the log in screen . I disabled authentication to see if I could figure out what was going on. I found that

I was getting a system error:

Validation of viewstate MAC failed. If this application is hosted by a Web Farm or cluster, ensure that <machineKey> configuration specifies the same validationKey and validation algorithm. AutoGenerate cannot be used in a cluster.

This error has been reported elsewhere [URL] so I made the following change to my web.config

<pages theme="Theme1" enableViewStateMac="false" enableEventValidation="false" viewStateEncryptionMode="Never">

This seems to have worked to a point, because with authentication DISABLED, I no longer get the error. But when I RE_ENABLE authentication, I get pitched out randomly back to the login screen. Time out is not an issue. It only happens when I move very quickly through screens that are doing a lot of postbacks.

This is the authentication stuff from my web.config

<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms name=".ASPXAUTH"
loginUrl="~/Login/Login.aspx"
protection="All"
timeout="3000"
path="/"
requireSSL="false"
slidingExpiration="true"
cookieless="UseDeviceProfile" />
</authentication>
<authorization>
<deny users="?"/>
</authorization>

I tried AutoDetect on cookieless as well. No change. I would appreciate ideas on how to troubleshoot this problem.

AJAX :: Web User Control Loaded Into PlaceHolder Control Causing Full Postback On Parent Page?

Jun 1, 2010

In my default.aspx page I have a PlaceHolder control within an UpdatePanel. In this placeholder control I will dynamically load a web user control, which is just a form with a submit button. On this user control, I have the form within an update panel and I have the "Submit" button's Click Event added to the triggers.

When I submit the form, the UpdatePanel on the web user control nor the update panel on the default.aspx page are capturing the post back, thus causing a full post back which refreshes my page.

how to capture this post so its rendered in Ajax and not a full post back?

Security :: IE 6 - Information Causing Partial Load Of The Page?

Mar 11, 2010

I have a website where different comapny and users can login. Till now I have not seen any issue on IE 6. But in case of one account, when try to login the website, users are getting security information "This page contains both secure and non-secure items.

I can reproduce the same easily for the same customer but not happening for any other customer. I have "ReportViewer" control (gets rendered as iframes) on the page.

In this scenario, whether user selectes "Yes" or "No" button, the home page with charts loads 30% and other controls remains invisible. Though I see same out in "View source" for this and other customers. We dont change anything much then the data and charts for the users. We use https for this website and has few links with "http" in page. But then this is same for all the users, but it happens only in case of one customer.

Disabling Visual Studio Development Server?

Aug 12, 2010

When debugging my website project I usually go to start options in the web project's properties and select 'Don't open a page' and 'Use custom server' with a url that's in my host file pointing to my local IIS.

Even when I do this though visual studio still spawns it's own Development Server instance every time I hit f5.

Also for web application projects that have shared ascx files for instance Visual Studio will also launch an instance of Development Server each time I debug the solutions for each for these projects. This results in a million instances of Development Server running on my machine at any given moment.

Is there any way to disable development server for a given project completely? Without pointing it to a localhost sub application?
