Setting Indexed Columns On A Custom SQL Table

Jul 22, 2010

I've read about primary, unique, clustered indexes etc. But I need to understand it via an example.

The image below is the auto-generated aspnet_Users table captured from SQL Server Web Admin Panel.

Taking this as a model; I will create a custom table called Companies and let's say the fields are: ID, Name, ShortName, Address, City, Country.. No values can be duplicate for ID, Name and ShortName fields.

What is your approach on creating indexes for this table? Which should be clustered or non-clustered? Are indexes below logical to you?

Index Columns Primary Unique Clustered ign.Dup.Keys Unique Key
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PK_ID ID True True False False False
Comp_Index Name,ShortName False True True False False

Table Colspan Span All Columns Regardless Of # Of Columns

Mar 5, 2010

I'm creating a table in an asp.net code behind dynamically, and I want to have a footer row that only has 2 cells. The first should span all the columns in the table-1. Is there some way other then keeping track of the # of columns in the table manually for me to set the colspan to be # of all the columns in the table-1? Preferably a HTML or CSS solution?

count += 1
totalNumber += current
End If
Next

Forms Data Controls :: Manually Setting The Column Width On GridView Columns?

Mar 30, 2010

I have a GridView with bound columns, for which I am manually setting the ItemWidth and HeaderWidth to 500px, and nothing happens. Is there some trick to getting this to work?

This is a column a large amount of text in it, and it keeps sizing to the width of the header text, which is simply "note". I don't want to set Wrap to false, becuase then the colummn could be thousands of px wide in cases.

Forms Data Controls :: Setting Visibility Of TemplateField Columns In Grid View?

Oct 27, 2010

i have a grid view with all columns as TemplateFields( No BoundField). Based on certain condition i have to set Visibility of few columns false. Suppose when there is no column 'CaseList2' in the DataTable, then the second column of the grid (whose column index is 1 )should be invisible. But when the Gridview binds it gives error DataBinding: 'System.Data.DataRowView' does not contain a property with the name 'CaseList2'

i googled it and found that

GridView1.Columns[1].Visible = false;

should work. But its not working actualy.

C# - Custom MembershipProvider With A Custom User Table

Apr 21, 2010

I've recently started tinkering with ASP.NET MVC, but this question should apply to classic ASP.NET as well. For what it's worth, I don't know very much about forms authentication and membership providers either.

I'm trying to write my own MembershipProvider which will be connected to my own custom user table in my database. My user table contains all of the basic user information such as usernames, passwords, password salts, e-mail addresses and so on, but also information such as first name, last name and country of residence.

As far as I understand, the standard way of doing this in ASP.NET is to create a user table
without the extra information and then a "profile" table with the extra information. However, this doesn't sound very good to me, because whenever I need to access that extra information I would have to make one extra database query to get it.

I read in the book "Pro ASP.NET 3.5 in C# 2008" that having a separate table for the profiles is not a very good idea if you need to access the profile table a lot and have many different pages in your website.

Now for the problem at hand... As I said, I'm writing my own custom MembershipProvider subclass and it's going pretty well so far, but now I've come to realize that the CreateUser doesn't allow me to create users in the way I'd like. The method only takes a fixed number of arguments and first name, last name and country of residence are not part of them.

So how would I create an entry for the new user in my custom table without this information at hand in CreateUser of my MembershipProvider?

When A Url Results In A Temporary Redirect (http 302), What Gets Indexed

Jan 5, 2010

I'm trying to make our (very heavily AJAX based) website more search engine friendly. We have a system where certain urls redirect to the main page after setting session variables to change the behavior of the main page. This is acheived using the Controller.Redirect method to create an ActionResult.

So for instance, the main page is:

http://radiotuna.com

but if we want to link to a radio station, we use:

http://radiotuna.com/s/66258

which redirects to the main page. However in this case, the displayed content is different due to Session variables that were set prior to the redirect.

What will be indexed by web crawlers when presented with this redirect?

Will Session be preserved in this case?

As far as I can tell there are a few possible outcomes:

crawler follows redirect, session info is preserved, crawled data is associated with http://radiotuna.com/s/66258 (the desired outcome)

crawler does not follow redirect. If we can send a page with the 302, this is OK-ish. Is this permitted?

crawler follows redirect, session info is preserved, crawled data is associated with http://radiotuna.com/ (bad)crawler follows redirect, but session info is discarded, so main (unmodified page) is associated with http://radiotuna.com/s/66258 (bad)

Perhaps a 302 is the wrong status to send back. Perhaps the idea of using redirects in this case is flawed.

EDIT: Why are we doing this? Ideally we'd like only a single URL to appear in the address bar, so we'd like to always redirect to the main page. When coming in from a redirect, this would result in a different title and meta description and it is this that we'd like to be picked up by the crawler and associated against the pre-redirect url.

EDIT2: Would it be better to detect if we're being hit by a crawler and to deliver the page without redirect in this case? How might one detect crawler clients?

ADO.NET :: Selecting Custom Columns To Bind Dropdown From A Generic List?

Feb 18, 2011

I have been facing this problem for a while now, what I exactly want to do is ->

I have a 3- Tier Application. For a table (say Employee) I have following classes in my BLL and DAL

1. Employee.cs (Contains database fields as properties)

2. EmployeeKeys.cs

3. EmployeeFactory.cs (Main BLL which make call to DAL method)

4. EmployeeDAL.cs (The DAL)

Suppose I have 6 columns in Employee table.

I know that the DAL returns List<Employee> to the BLL and then the BLL in turn gives me the Employee fields.

I have no problem accesing it.

But suppose I have a dropdownlist control and wish to bind EmplyeeName and EmployeeId with the Dropdown.

Is there any way that I can implement that my DAL returns a Generic list containing only the two fields required to bind the Dropdown.

In short i want my list to return only 2 columns, not all the 6 like the List<Employee>

How do i implement this???

Do I need to create a custom List<CustomEmployeeData>, if so how can i implement it in the 3 tier application.

Basically i m looking to increase the efficiency by getting less data from database. Am i on the right track????
