Trim Values In Detailsview When Databinding?

Is there an easy way to trim values in a details view during edit mode? I tried modifying the database query to trim the values, but it didn't like to do both ways databinding after that. I tried looking through all the properties of the text boxes themselves and found nothing. I know I could add an event handler for the databound event, and set all of the values one by one, but this is an application that has existed since before my employment and there are over 40 values in this details view, all in text boxes with seemingly random names that have little to do with the values they represent or obvious naming scheme.
I thought maybe there was a way to way to iterate over the DetailsView.Fields property, but couldn't figure anything out there either. I am not allowed to change the schema from CHAR to VARCHAR either. Any other quick ideas? There is a strong likelihood this page will change again, and I would like something that might take care of this problem for any new fields added in the future without extra work. Unfortunately, redesigning it is not anywhere near a top priority right now, so a quick fix to alleviate some of the headache of using this monstrosity is all I am looking for.

I have a standard gridview, populated via a SQLDataSource, with columns converted to templates.
The edit templates have text boxes. When saving edited data via these text boxes, I need to trim the values to remove any spaces.
How do you recommend doing so? I've tried various methods but none seem to work.
Currently my update parameters are specified in the SQLDataSource.

I am using a gridview populated via a SQLDataSource. When editing or inserting data via the gridview, how do I trim the values before they are inserted to or updated in the database? I want to ensure that no spaces are accidentally added to the end of my text values.

I am getting the error:
Databinding expressions are only supported on objects that have a DataBinding event.
System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListItem does not have a DataBinding event.

I have a radiobuttonlist in a details view. Databinding is happening in PageLoad (if not IsPostback), after a details view item is inserted, edited and upon clicking cancel when in edit mode.Everything works well except when clicking cancel which for some reason the radiobuttonlist appears as empty. The code is surely working because up till OnPreRender the radiobuttonlist contains the required items. However OnRender the list appears as empty.

Quick question here. I'm sure it's possilbe, just can't get it to work.
I've got a gridview. In have a gridview. The gridview is bound to a list of my custom class. The class exposes a link to an image as well as the image's height and width. I have a Image Control in the gridview. I've bound the Image Url to the correct property. Now, I'd like to bind the height and width properties as well. But everytime I do that I get the following error:
Cannot create an object of type 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.Unit' from its string representation '"<%#Bind("GetImageHeight()")%' for the 'Height' property.
Here is an example of the tag:

I really have a big problem(stuck) with two dropdownlists inside a detailsview.I have 4 detailsview : DdlRt,DdlRt2,ddlMobv1,ddlMobv2. Basically what happens here is that DdlRt2 gets populated when DdlRt is selected and ddlMobv2 gets populated when a specific value from ddlMobv1 is selected.
In code posted above the detailsview has a "Update" command and the problem is when the update command is executed the data is successfully posted to the db BUT! THE VALUES from DdlRt2 and ddlMobv2 dissapear! And I can't insert any more Items. The only Item that stays in these two dropdownlists is the default "Select Department" item which is't set in codebehind but is set in .aspx.....I can't figure what I'm doing wrong here It must be something with databinding & events.
So my question is "Why can't I insert any more items to these two dropdownlists after the "Update" command on the DetailsView is set or how can I preserve the values that are already in"?

I have been struggling with DetailsView for quite some time.
Only chkActive and txtStatement in the code below are Editable. So when I click Edit, edit the fields and click Update, it does go to the ItemUpdating event, but I'm not being able to retrieve the updated values.
I get error-
Unable to cast object of type 'System.Web.UI.LiteralControl' to type 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.Label'.

I have a problem I have been googling the entire day and still have no soloution. I have a detailsview with 2 dropdownlists. Fisrt one is ddlCaregory. Second is ddlSubCategory. The value is passed from the first ddl to display the SubCategory linked to ddlCategory. Both ddlCategory and ddlSubCategory are Templatefields. This is also in VB.
The Details view has a sqlDataSource (sdsApplicants), ddlCategory has a Datasource (sdsCategory) and ddlSubCategory (sdsSubCategory). ddlCategories lists the data returned from sds Categories and save any changes to sdsApplicants. I can get ddlSubCat to display the correct SubCatagory bases on ddlcategory sesection but as soon as I try bind it to sdsApplicants I get the following error
'ddlSubCategory' has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items.

I have a DetailsView which has two fields - one that is visible, one that is not. The first the user fills out, the second I want to auto-populate. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a way to set the value in this second invisible field. I've tried adding code like this to the Page_Load:

DetailsView1.DefaultMode = DetailsViewMode.Insert
Dim txt1 As TextBox = DirectCast(DetailsView1.FindControl("Type"), TextBox)

But this returns an error of "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." how to accomplish this - either using the method above or another method? The hoped for end result is that when a new record is inserted via the DetailsView that this record will include the username (entered by the user) as well as the "type" of "administrator"

I have a DeatilsViews bound to an ObjectDataSource, I need set some default values for Insert and Update mode, which event(s) on which control(s) will be best to handle this?
I tried to set the default values using TextBoxes inside InsertTemplate, but the values are not saved to DB because 2 way bindings are lost.

I'm inserting data into a SQL database through a detailsview. When a user inserts an incorrect data type or leaves a required field blank it shoots off to a big error screen. Is there a control that I can use that will allow it to give an error (with a little star or something) that says which field is incorrect without the big error screen?

I'm using a detailsview control to update a record, however in this particular case there's only one field that can be changed out of a many. The update method for my object takes all fields as parameters. When the detailsview's updating method fires, the values for the readonly fields (those rendered as a Label) are not available in the e.NewValues collection.
I'm currently grabbing a reference to the object when the detailsview is databound (in the objectdatasource selected event handler), storing it in session and manually adding entries to the e.NewValues collection when updating fires. It works but seems kind of heavy handed. So, is there a better way to get the read only values back into my update method? Or is there a better way of doing this altogether?

My questions are...
What are the possible values (e.g. "Select", "Insert", etc.) for this CommandName property when operating a standard, uncustomized DetailsView control?
Which order do the following fire in?
ItemCommand
ItemCreated
ItemDeleted
ItemDeleting
ItemInserted
ItemInserting
ItemUpdated
ItemUpdating
The "ing" events are currently being intercepted so that if the user doesn't have permission I set the e.Cancel = true and the "ed" events have redirects to send the user back to a list page that shows the items they just added/updated/deleted. However, I am not able to capture the Cancel button on the DetailsView control since there's no event for it. What I want is to redirect the user back to the list page if they click on Cancel as well.

Im not sure what i could have done wrong here but i created a dataset (ran a query and it returns the correct data) - created my BLL class - bound the ObjectDataSource to the control using the BLL - ran the site and all the data is showing as expected. Now i click edit columns (from DetailsView smart tag) and the selected fields are empty. I refresh the schema and this makes no difference. What could i be doing wrong?

Background: I open a page that has a detailsview control using Accessdatasource. It is automatically opened with the row I want to update as I get there by passing the key as a URL parm. The update works for all fields except 2 template fields I added. I added a field for update date and updated by which I want the code to populate in the code behind so the user does not enter it. I have the same login on another page using an insert and it works fine. I cannot figure out what is wrong on the update and I tried everything. The code behind is in the OnItemUPdating event. code behind:

I have EntityDataSource for DetailsView which is in Edit mode by default (showin Update, Cancel link buttons).
This datasource also has foreign key called PecID. If I change the value in textbox bound to PecID, it works fine.
Entering IDs is not very user friendly, so I add dropdownlist and new datasource.
When I select new value from dropDownList and press update the DropDownList's selection is restored to original (previous) value.
Other values in textboxes are saved as expected.
After few hours of trying to figure out what is going on, I got lucky. I figure out that it is important the order of TextBox and DropDownList in field template.
