VS 2008 HTML Input Controls Not Retaining Values?
Feb 16, 2010
I've got several HTML Input controls (type = "text", runat="server") on a ASPX page. As part of this page, I'm doing a callback (no postback wanted) and am attempting to get the values of the HTML Input controls.
However, when I set a breakpoint in the callback method on the server side, the HTML Input control values aren't there.
So, I have two questions...
1)... According to Microsoft and several other experts, when a Callback is initiated (Javascript calling a server side method), that there would not be a Postback. But, when I debug, I see the Page Load and several other methods being called. I can see the HTML controls in the Page Load event, but again, there isn't any values
2)... How can I retain the values of the HTML Input controls so that I can retrieve their values server side? Again, I'm using Runat = "Server" so that I can "supposedly" find them server side.

I'm trying to retain "visible" property of a control using view state in the following way
public bool showstatusbox {
get { return Convert.ToBoolean(ViewState["statusbox"]); }
set { ViewState["statusbox"] = value; }
}
Is there anything I should do other than this to retain value. Because, though I store the value in view state, on postback, its becoming null.

I have a very simple user control with 5 radio buttons on it, and 3 properties (ID, RatingSetID, and Rating). On the initial load of the page they are on, the code acquires data and places the data into the 3 properties. However, when the submit button is clicked the page reloads and the 3 properties get reset to 0, they are in the !IsPostBack as well.

I have a Listbox getting populated when the page loads itself and also in postbacks. Some items are already selected in that listbox even when the page loads or postbacks. I have to select one or more items in that textbox in addition to the selected one.
Till this point, it works perfectly, but the problem is that when i click an "update" button to save the newly added items, then also the page postbacks and so the list box get populated again. This will loose the newly selected items and none of the newly selected items will be saved.
So what should i do in order not to loose the newly selected items when i click the "update" button.
Note:- I need to populate the listbox on postbacks also. So the population of that listbox on postbacks cannot be discarded.

I have a custom server control (composite control having dynamically created dropdown boxes and textboxes). I have enabled AJAX in order to avoid page reload.The server control is used inside the ASP.NET webcontrol having few buttons which controls the visibility of the server control. Now I enter values in the dropdown box and texboxes and click on any other button. After this postback the last entered values are gone! The control is not remembering the values. How can I retain the values after post back?

I have an ambitious requirement for an asp.net 2.0 web page that contains a table (gridview), and each row in the grid contains 6 select (dropdown) controls for data entry. The number of rows that will be displayed is dependent upon the user's search parameters, which are specified in another area of the page. Unfortunately, with the default (and even basic) search parameters specified, the grid could contain several hundred rows. I've noticed that the browser, in this case IE8, starts behaving rather erratically once I reach a large number of rows -- no documented evidence for the number of rows where this begins to be a problem. For example, trying to view the source of the page results in a message from IE stating that there was a problem with the page that forced the browser to reload it, and I never get the source. Obviously the page loads and renders rather slowly also.
I know that my solution is probably going to involve paging the gridview such that it only displays 20 or so rows per page, and I'll have to write code to handle the saving of changes in the dropdown values when the user changes pages. I can probably turn off viewstate on the gridview also. However, the question I really want to pose is this -- has anyone seen a documented rule indicating the maximum number of input controls that an HTML browser form is supposed to be able to contain? I could not find anything on the Internet after doing a search, and I suspect the answer may be whatever the browser can handle based on the machine configuration it is running on. Any rules of thumb you use?

I have 3 tables as follows:
1 - Members containing the following fields:
MemberID int
MemberName
2 - Companies containing the following:
CompanyID int
CompanyName
CompanyType (S=Supplier, R=Retailer, C=Competitor)
3 - Member_Company_Link containing the following:
MemberID int
CompanyID int
The Company table contains any Company with a potential relationship to a "Member". For example:
Companyabc = C (Competitor)
Companyxyz = S (Supplier)
When a new Member record is entered, the user selects from two dropdowns: CompanyType (Supplier, Retailer,Competitor); and CompanyName. The CompanyName dropdown is populated depending on the value selected for CompanyType so if the user selects "Supplier" for CompanyType then only those Companies with a CompanyType of "S" for Supplier will be listed in the CompanyName dropdown.
The use can enter up to 10 CompanyType/CompanyName combinations. When the record is saved, these CompanyType/CompanyName combinations are saved in the Member_Company_Link table. One record for each CompanyType/CompanyName combination is entered in the table.
The problem I'm having is in the retrieval process. I have a "search" screen in which users can select certain criteria to list Members by and one of them is CompanyName. For example they want to see all Member records with "company xyz" as a Supplier and/or "companyabc" as a Competitor. Because each Member can have multiple Supplier and/or Comptitor records I can't figure out how to loop through them to match on the value entered by the user. If Member1 has 5 corresponding records in theMember_Company_Link file and 4 of them contain Companies that are Competitors (Competitor1, Competitor2, Competitor3 and Competitor4) and the search criteria is to find records containing "Competitor3" how can I loop through the values in the Member_Company_Link file for each MemberID to see if there is a match for "Competitor3"?
I know this post is too long and most of you will have ignored it by now but I'm hoping someone will have a clue because I've already spent more than a day trying to figure it out. It seems I have to store multiple values in an array but I have no clue how to do this.

I have a GridView control that has an ItemTemplate that contains an HTML radio button. In my code behind I am querying a database, retrieving a column of values, and then binding the list to the GridView. My problem is that the radio button that I select is not being persisted on post back. I have tried using an ASP RadioButton rather than an HTML control, but when I do that all of the radio button can be selected at the same time (i.e. like check boxes). how to persist the radio button that is selected in this scenario?

I have successfully created a strongly typed dataset. And trying to assign my user input values to the columns of my StronglyTypedDataset but having no luck with it
[Code]....
In the above code 'PlantInventoryAccuracy' is the name of the Strongly Typed Dataset and 'PlantInventoryAccuracyDataTable' is the dataTable. when I try o debug this to see if my user input values are being assigned to te currentRow I see blue squuiggly line under the 'new' key word when I mouse hover it says
'The type PlantInventoryAccuracy.PlantInventoryAccuracyRow has no constructors defined.'
This is the first time I am trying to use Storngly typed datasets. I am not sure if I am trying to use it right. The above code is in my code behind page and my idea is to fill this row with the user input values then pass this to my data layer where I need to assign these values as the parameters to the stored procedure I have created and then store them to the database.

I'm using jQuery to build an IFRAME and pass some hidden input values to a Download.aspx page - jQuery code looks like this
Code:
$('<form action="'+ url +'" method="'+ (method||'post') + '" target="iframeX">'+inputs+'</form>')
.appendTo('body').submit().remove();
The inputs variable looks like this
<input type="hidden" name="filename" value="mit-license.txt" />
And the top of the Download.aspx code behind looks like this
Code:
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
Dim ctx As HttpContext = HttpContext.Current
Dim response As HttpResponse = ctx.Response
Dim sFile As String = "mit-license.txt" ' Request.QueryString("filename").ToString
[Code] ....
I could not find the INPUT value - where does it pass in? I checked the "sender" and the ctx objects and could not find it... I hardwired the mit-license.txt filename to prove that the download works...

I would like to store some business flags (like: isFavorite, isOnLive etc.) per an html table row that won't be visible to user.
In practice, I have a simple ADO.Net DataTable on my code-behind which is used as a data-source for a asp.Net GridView control.
This table contains some business flags on its 0th, 1st, 2nd columns.
I need to store those columns on the rendered HTML of the grid-view -so that I can reach them via JavaScript- but I do not want them to be visible.

I currently have a TextBox using: <%: Html.TextBox("TextBox1") %> How do I get the value of what is typed into the TextBox as a string so that I can use that string variable throughout my application? The view has he following with the inherits on top of page to model. This page is named "InputNumbersSection":
<%: Html.TextBoxFor(m => m.Number) %>
and the action:
<%: Html.ActionLink("Get Number!", "DisplayNumbersSection") %>
The Model has this:
public class NumberModels
{
public string Number { get; set; }
}
The controller has the following:
public ActionResult DisplayNumbersSection(NumberModels model)
{
if (ModelState.IsValid)
{
string TextBoxValue = model.Number;
ViewData["Number"] = TextBoxValue;
}
return View();
}
The ViewData I use in another page to return the number from the textbox typed in the view. When I type somthing into the textbox, I do not see the property getting hit or executed. The "Number" property returns NULL all the time. It almost seems as if it is not picking up what I type into the TextBox

I'm using MVC, and i'm building my own basic blogging engine. I need to be able to allow HTML input to be submitted to the server so it can be added to a database. I only want HTML input allowed in that textarea alone, but I still want my other validation like StringLength etc. How could I do this?

Here's an example of a regular standard HTML input for my radiobuttonlist:
<label><input type="radio" name="rbRSelectionGroup" checked value="0" />None</label>
<asp:Repeater ID="rptRsOptions" runat="server">
<ItemTemplate>[code]...
I removed some stuff for this thread, one being I put an r for some name that I do not want to expose here so just an fyi.Now, I would assume that this would or should happen:
Page loads the first time, the None radio button is checked / defaulted
I go and select a different radiobutton in this radiobutton list
I do an F5 refresh in my browser
The None radio button is pre-selected again after it has come back from the refresh
but #4 is not happening. It's retaining the radiobutton that I selected in #2 and I don't know why. I mean in regular HTML it's stateless. So what could be holding this value? I want this to act like a normal input button.I know the question of "why not use an ASP.NET control" will come up. Well there are 2 reasons:
The stupid radiobuttonlist bug that everyone knows about I just want to brush up more on standard input tags.We are not moving to MVC so this is as close as I'll get and it's ok, because the rest of the team is on par with having mixed ASP.NET controls with standard HTML controls in our pages I'm surprised that it's retaining the change in selection after postback.

I think I need to drop in some escape characters, but I'm not quite sure where. Here is the javascript function I'm attempting to call:
function setData(associateValue, reviewDateValue) {
var associate = document.getElementById("Associate");
var reviewDate = document.getElementById("ReviewDate");
associate.value = associateValue;
reviewDate.value = reviewDateValue;
}
Here is the asp .net mvc line where I'm attempting to create a Radio button with a click event that calls the above function and passes data from the model as javascript parameter values.
<%= Html.RadioButton("Selected", item.Selected, new { onClick="setData('<%=item.Associate%>','<%=item.ReviewDate%>' )" } )%>
The above throws a bunch of compile issues and doesn't work. A call such as the following does call the javascript, but doesn't get the data from the model.
<%= Html.RadioButton("Selected", item.Selected, new { onClick="setData('item.Associate','item.ReviewDate' )" } )%>
<%= Html.RadioButton("Selected", item.Selected, new { onClick="setData('item.Associate','item.ReviewDate' )" } )%>
<% String functionCall = String.Format("setData('{0}','{1}')", Html.Encode(item.Associate), Html.Encode(item.ReviewDate )) ; %>
<%= Html.RadioButton("Selected", item.Selected, new { onClick=functionCall } )%>
