I grant permission to NETWORK SERVICE manually to have access to C:inetpubwwwroot so ASP.NET can do something like reading and writing local files.
Is there a security reason this permission has not been granted by default?

View 1 RepliesMy ASP.NET MVC 2 application runs under built-in local NETWORK SERVICE account. I want to set up access permissions for the folder which resides in another computer, but in the same domain. I located that folder right-clicked to open its properties form, clicked to Security tab and pressed Add button which displayed Add user form with correct domain name in the location field. I referred to the account with following syntax:
<domain name><server name>$
because I learned that NETWORK SERVICE account uses machine account when connected to other computers in the domain. However, the system couldn't find the account, so refuses to add the account. Without the domain name it adds a user, but that user seems to be local user, not web server's NETWORK SERVICE account. What am I doing wrong?
By the way, the above syntax worked when I created login for the sql server which is different computer from the web server.

View 2 RepliesThe customer(telecommunication firm) has a server which we publish asp.net web service codes which we designed for them. We use that server and web service to get data from the customers own web service and give out for client(telephone) to use it.The customer does not allow us to code on the remote server, so we have to work on local computer.The customer has 2 IPs for its own web services. One of them can be reached only from the remote server, this is an internal IP. Second IP is public which I can reach from my local computer. They address the same methods. For security reasons, they divided IPs. Everything is fine while developing on local. But when I need to publish web service to the server, I need to change web service URLs to remote servers internal IP. But the local Visual Studio web reference doesn't change web service URLs because it can't reach to service as it is only permitted to reach from the server. So I cannot get a build and publish my code.

The web service failed to be called if anonymous in web service is turned OFF. I was thinking to assign Credential programmatically from my web application via "DefaultCredential". But how could I know if IUSR_machineName has the permission to call the web service?

I'm new in the WCF and in the web developing ..
I wrote WCF service and i by creating new Web Sites - i added new WCF service that will host my WCF service.
In the 'Web location' i define the service to be HTTP and the URL to be "http://localhost/MyService"
Now i want to access thru some other machine ( in the same network ) to my machine and get using the Service method that my WCF service exposed - but i fail each time ( calling from the second machine "http://a.b.c.d/MyService/interfaceMethodName")
If i try to call the web service thru the same machine - i get the right response.
First, I felt I had a clear understanding of how the Network Service account work. It is the default account ASP.Net runs under and has very limited access. I have verified in the Application Pool that ASP.Net is running under the Network Service Account. I have a UNC file share that is located on another server, let us say "\myservermyfiles". I have logged on to "MyServer" and right-clicked on the shared folder "myfiles" and just for the sake of testing, went to the Shared Tab->Permissions and added the Network Service account and gave it "change and read" access. I then went to the Security Tab, added the Network Service account and gave it all permissions. For some reason, I am still getting an "access denied" exception. I know impersonation is an option at some point, but I would really like to know why my ASP.Net application cannot copy a file to this share just for my own personal understanding given the fact that I gave the Network Service account the proper access. Like always, I will continue to research.

After that also, it did not work.
We checked the permissions of the folder Temporary ASP.NET Files and for the Network Service user, we checked the Security Permissions and it has all the permissions as required.
I use a dropdown to select a record and set another dropdown to a preselected value as mentioned in the record. But when I initiate the record reading, it gives me the following error which I can't resolve. dd.. has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items. I have a column in my .mdf file with the 'uniqueidentifier' datatype. I would like to have it set by SQL Server Express automatically. There are articles on the web that recommend using one of the following commands as the default value:NEWID()NEWSEQUENTIALID()I put this in VS 2010 column properties of my table, in Default Value or Binding. The first command works fine but the second turns out showing an error message 'error validating the default for column xxxx'Any advice on this? I'm I missing much using the first command?
View 6 RepliesIn the IIS, it shows that the web app (i'm using) is using an application pool that uses NETWORK SERVICE account for identity. But when I debug/run my web app, User.Identity.Name shows that my windows user login instead. I checked my web.config file, and it does not have Impersonate enabled. In fact, I set it to false, and it still shows the same.

I have a dropdown list that is populated by a dataset (Data being extracted from DB). Based on the selection made by the user I call OnSelectedIndexChanged, and populated the form with the relevent info. The problem I am having is the first item in the list is selected by default, so if the user selects this option OnSelectedIndexChanged does not fire. To work around this I add a default item to the dropdown list after populating it with the dataset as shown here;

This works fine, however if the user selects an item from the list, and then proceeds to selects the default item "----Select Item----" i receive an error. sys.webforms.pagerequestmanagersevererrorexception: an unknown error occured while processing the request on the server. The status code returned from the server was: 500
I use in my application 2 areas: Website and Admin. I will put all controllers and views in these areas, not in root application. So I would like to have default route 'Website/Mycontroller/Myaction', not 'Mycontroller/Myaction'. I have changed Global.asax.cs:

If the website's physical directory is not in C:inetpubwwwroot and is instead in C:MyProjectsProject1 - which account needs what rights to the MyProjects or the Project1 folder?

I created a web service on localhost, and I tried to call it from a web app (also on the localhost) via HttpWebRequest, but Application_BeginRequest in Global.asax didn't fire. When I type in IE 'http://localhost:8010/Test/' (the web service) Application_BeginRequest fires. Where is the problem? How can I test a localhost web service from a page which is also on localhost?
View 2 RepliesI've a problem updating objects with the ADO.NET Data Services.
First I've create a service, which can load and store the data. Its a basic data context which implements the IUpdatable-interface.
After that, I've created a simple service-client. I just created it with the 'Add Service'-reference in Visual Studio. Basically this service seams to work. I can query for the objects and store new objects. However I cannot update objects.
This is my update-code on the client:

What my main issue is, that IUpdatable.SetValue() isn't called for the object which I want to update. Only the IUpdatable.SaveChanges() is called without updating the objects on the server.
When I create a new object, the IUpdatable.SetValue is called on the server to set the property.
So what I am doing wrong? Are my expectations wrong? Is IUpdatable.SetValue supposed to be called when updating a object? Or do I need to do additional things to do updates?
Edit: I just watched the HTTP-requests between the client and the server. The client send a HTTP-Merge request with the changes. However I still don't know why the changes aren't stored.
The following 'hello world' webservice works fine on my computer (VS2008) but I can't get it to work on the server--either from an aspx page (below) or when invoked directly. I get '404 page not found' on the direct invocation.

I added the HttpGet and HttpPost to test the web service directly on the server. I can open the page and invoke it, but then get the 404 page not found response.
I have a simple .Net web service. When I visit the /webservice.svc path in a browser .Net renders a nice help page with some sample C# and VB.Net code. How do I stop this from displaying? Also, is there any way to prevent a request for ?wsdl from returning the wsdl file?
