I'm creating a webpage with serveral web controls to set search parameters for querying an SQL table. My plan is to use a TableAdapter to hold the query. If the user decides not to use one, several, or any of the web controls to filter their search, I want the SELECT to execute without complaining that it doesn't have parameter values. Should my SQL query look like

I've already implemented URL routing in my app but there are cases where I may or may not get a paramter. In particular, I'm trying to come up with a good way to handle multi-language support. For example, if my regular URL is /SomeCategory/Friendly-Topic-URL, I want to have an optional language selector at the end but I'd like to be optional. So, if I get /SomeCategory/Friendly-Topic-URL/es, that should bring up the topic in Spanish but if get nothing, that should bring up English.

I have a data grid with a lot of information on it - to easily filter the data, I would like to be able to pass parameters to it. My problem is that I do not want the parameters to be required. So if I just put 1 or 2 of them in the query string, I would like for it to return all of the data related to those two parameters.I am using a data grid & stored procedures:My Stored Procedure looks like this:

What is the best way to handle following situation? A dropdown(for master table) is optional in a particular form. But, In database table the field is constrained with foreign key. If user don't select from dropdown then It creates problem because of foreign key. One solution is to create default option in master table and use it in case of blank selection. but in dropdown, we need to handle this to show on top. Is it perfect solution?

I'm using the iis7 URL Rewrite module and it's working fine, except for two things. Being new to this, I might be missing something obvious.
1) My URL gets converted from www.mysite.com/search.aspx?fName=John&sName=Smith to www.mysite.com/John/Smith. This works fine, but if I add a trailing / , a few images on the site disappear, wheras a few don't. (They're all in the same location). However, the search results are fine.
2) Is it possible to make cerain querystrings optional? Server side, this is implemented (i.e. if nothing is entered, then assume a default value). But how would this work with the URL rewrite module? e.g. www.mysite.com/John would search for John and use a default value for the sName parameter.

I have the following JSON class I am intending to use to perform management calls on my database asynchronously:
<script type="text/javascript">
var CalendarManager = {
defaultOptions: {
staffcode: 0, // required
date: 0, // required
[Code]....
Basically, my question is: how do I specify optional parameters to a WebMethod when providing JSON data?
I know I can reduce the parameters down to just the required values, and then use HttpContext.Request.Params to read the values of optional paramaters, but I would have thought the way I have tried here should have worked.
EDIT
The XMLHttpRequest.responseText value for the error is:
Invalid JSON primitive: staffcode.
This is throwing me even more off the scent of the problem :(

I get a 404 error when I navigate to the following URL using the route below:
http://localhost:53999/properties/
However, all the following are correctly routed to the List action in my controller:
http://localhost:53999/properties/usa/new-york/manhattan/12
http://localhost:53999/properties/usa/new-york/manhattan
http://localhost:53999/properties/usa/new-york

In PropertiesController.cs: [Code]....
It looks like it should just go to the default controller/action,

In my stored procedure I have declared some parameters as NULL values(Optional Parameters).
In my C#.NET code I didn't use the parameters to pass values to Stored Procedure's NULL
Parameters. So I am getting Exception.
I don't want to pass parameters from my code.Because I have declared 30 parameters in my
Stored Procedure as NULL values.
Is there any other way to execute Stored Procedure from Front End without passing values to
Optional Parameters in SQL stored procedure?

I'm pretty new to C# and ASP.NET, so bear with me on this one. I'm setting up a page that receives query strings from the url. It then passes these strings to another method (in another class, actually), which goes on to do lots of things depending on the value of the query string.
The general structure looks something like this, where DoSomething() is actually part of another class that will be used by lots of different pages:
pretected void Page_Load (object sender, EventArgs e)
{
DoSomething (Request.QueryString["name"]);
}
public void DoSomething (string UrlVariable)
{
// if UrlVariable isn't set, initialize it to some value
// do stuff with UrlVariable
}
Here's what I'm wondering:
If the query string "name" isn't defined in the url, what does Request.QueryString return? an empty string? null? If it returns null, what happens if I try to pass null to a method that is expecting a string? Does the whole program fall apart, or can I check for null inside the DoSomething() method (after receiving the null string)?
The "name" is optional, so if the user doesn't set it, I'd like to detect that and initialize it to some default value. If possible, though, I'd like to put any validation inside DoSomething(), instead of doing the check on every page that requests the string.

I have couple of DDL's which let user choose couple of different values from it. Once the user has made his selection he clicks on the "Submit" buttion which redirects the user to the other page, which then displays table from backend SQL DB. The pages are named Page1.aspx and Page2.aspx resp. I am using Querystring to carry forward the values of the DDL's to Page2.aspx.
How can i modify the query in such a way that even if one of the DDL's is left blank the Query would ignore that and shall produce the table considering value of DDL2 in the where clause. In case both the DDL's are empty then the query will not have a where clause and shall showcase the complete table as such. I've written a query for this but it's not working the way it shoul.Here is my code for the SQLDataSource: [Code]....

1. I have a GridView on my page and it uses sqldatasource with parameterized query. What I want to do is, on page load (where nothing has been selected so no parameter supplied), I want it to query everything (something like SELECT * FROM [this_table]) but since my SelectCommand is something like
SELECT * FROM [this_table] WHERE [this_column] = @someParameters AND [that_column] = @someParameters.
Can I play around with default value to achieve something like that but how ? Now, when the page loads, it doesn't show anything (No Gridview).
2. On my page, I made something like (username, gender, address, and more) and one single search button. That means, no single control enable auto postback. What I am trying to accomplish is building dynamic query
(if username specifed -> SELECT * FROM [this_table] WHERE [username] LIKE @username).
If both username and gender are specified (SELECT * FROM [this_table] WHERE [username] LIKE @username AND [gender] = @gender) and you know the rest. How can I do this using GridView and SqlDataSource ? To my knowledge, I can only specify one SELECT statement in a sqldatasource.

so I have a web programming assignment for university where I'm building a website that uses an Access database but I have hit a brick wall with something.I'm using parameterized queries to query my database. For one of my queries, I want to be able to take a bunch of parameters that are optional, and if they aren't needed I'll pass in a value of null and I'd like the part of the where clause relevant to them to evaluate to true. This is straightforward in most databases, from my understanding you could do something like to make param1 an optional parameter.
WHERE ((@param1 = ARandomColumnName) OR (@param1 = null))
However this can't be done using Access, as all parameters in a query are represented by a ?. Every ? is assumed to refer to a different parameter, so if you want to use a parameter more than one (like the above code I wrote does) then you'd have to pass it twice. This seems hacky to meSo what do I do? I have spent *hours* googling and banging my head on the desk. I'll cry if I missed something really obvious

here is my code for selectiong some records from db table
string strSql = "select * from mtblNBD where SentTo=@SentTo and InternalStatus Is NULL order by DeadLine desc";
SqlCommand com = new SqlCommand(strSql, con);
com.Parameters.Add("@SentTo", SqlDbType.NVarChar, 50).Value = (string)Session["uname"];
here I am using parameters for SenTo field but not for NULL so it is ok... or should I use parameters for this field where value is NULL , if yes then how can I use parameter for this

I've been out of the ASP.Net arena since 1.1, and I'm starting to get back into it after a hiatus.
In the past, I would generally create SqlDataReaders, wire them up to pull from tables in a database via direct sql or accessing database views (mostly in MSSQL), grab the data, and display it in some datatable, or datalist.
Modifying data would usually be calling a stored procedure in the database to add/modify data, and then retrieve it afterward.
Now that I read up, I see there are alot of new things in ADO.Net world; strongly typed datasets, auto-generated adapters, etc.
My question is, does anyone have a good reference on best practices (or a book recommendation) on how to handle data access, and data manipulation and display now? I'm assuming that there are more automatic ways to show and manipulate data than before, but the new details are quite vast (which is good), but slightly overwhelming for me.

This issue has a few different facets so I wasn't sure what topic to post it in.I have a DB query like this:A SELECT statement with an INNER JOIN of two tables: [programs] and [program_managers] then on an aspx page ProgramManagers.aspx, I list the Project Managers, ordered by the Priority field of [programs].
I take the query and put it in a DataTable.Then I loop through the rows 1 by 1, creating Labels, etc to display the content.
Now here's the issue: Because a given Program Manager may manage more than one program, when I display this way, the Program Manager's Bio etc, gets listed as many times as their are programs that they manage.

I am trying to set up a page that has two behaviors. I'm seperating them by URL: One behavior is accessed via /some-controller/some-action, the other is via /some-controller/some-action?customize. It doesn't look like the Request.QueryString object contains anything, though, when I visit the second URL...I mean, the keys collection has one element in it, but it's null, not 'customize'. Anyone have any ideas about this or how to enable this. I'd like to avoid manually parsing the query string at all costs :).
