For a large fillin form I use the asp.net FormView for the magic databinding to my model. In this model I've a property called Rides (shown below), which exposes a list, which I obviously not want to be replaced entirely. So I made it readonly.
However, this way I can't use the databinding features anymore. Is there a common solution for this problem?

I am trying here to find a simple solution to bind an array of elements to a model using the MVC model binder. If I use the @Html.Checkbox helper now, it will generate me something like this :

I should be ok as it manage the checked in state and not checked in. The problem here is when I try to bind it back to the model (something really simple)

When I debug, the chk variable in the model is still null. I tried with IList<string>, bool[], IList<bool> nothing seems to make it. Is there any other way to deal with this else than form.GetValues("chk")[0].Contains("true") ?
I am looking here to find a quick and easy way to bind a list of checkbox list items when the postback occurs in the model. Apparently the common way to do it now seems to do it like this form.GetValues("checkboxList")[0].Contains("true"); It seems painfull and not exactly safe. Is there a way to bind a list of checkbox (that are created with or without an helper in the view) or even an array of data for that matters during the UpdateModel(myViewModel, form.ToValueProvider()); phase which would populate an IList<string> or string[] inside of the model ?

In case the list does not have the correct owner for the user I have added functionality for them to add a new owner to the database table that populates the list. I did this by including a textbox and an Insert button in a panel. When the user clicks the new owner insert button I would like to re-databind the dropdown list so that they will see the owner they added and be able to select it.
When I add ddl_owners.databind to my button click code it gives me an error. "Databinding methods such as Eval(), XPath(), and Bind() can only be used in the context of a databound control."
I don't want to re-databind the entire formview because then it deletes all the information on the form that the user has already keyed in.

View 1 RepliesReally new to C# & Web developing - but have used the DAL & BLL model from a number of the turorials. Have a situation that I not sure the best way to accomplish. I have an application dealing with courses, books, etc. utilizing an Access Database. All was going well in creating an on-line catalog using Formview and tables to display the db values stored in the Course Table (Course ID the key). User is able to use dropdown list to locate the course - dropdown list showed the Course Nbr & Name, but used the Course ID to get the detail. This issue appeared when they introduced a Prerequisite field in the Course Table. This contains the Course ID of the prerequisite course, but they want to display the Course Nbr and Name in the table field. So today it show 18 (Course ID) and they want B101 Intro to Biology. Hope I have provided enough information of what the code looks like below

I have a parent View that uses a few partial views. Each partial view has its own custom model. The parent View is a model containing each of the partial view's model. In other words this parent View model is NOT flat.
How do i get POST data to bind with the parent's model object? Do i have to write a custom model binder?

This is not really a question so I hope don't be fired! So I have to make a twitter like timeline, a superposition of blocks containing informations.
I really don't know how to make this.. The problem is the number of blocks aren't the same each time, sometimes it will be 1 block only, sometimes two or sometimes more..
So do I make some HtmlWriter to write the html directly? I pretty new in asp.net so maybe it is possible to do that more easily! With WebUserControl maybe, a block = a wuc so I can add the number of wuc I need.. I'm quite lost so maybe somebody have done this kind of thing already and can put me on the right way..
I have a GridView which I have a List bound to - I want to be able to allow filter of the data based on multiple CheckBoxLists. For arguments sake let's say I have a List of Jobs, and I want to filter the jobs by code - So I would have a CheckBoxList likeC#ASP.NETphpF#etc..If someone selects multiple codes, how do you pass the values into a List to rebind to the GridView? Is there a way to pass values as an array? Or maybe a comma seperated string?Any examples (I'm a C# boy) would be greatly appreciated, and I hope I have explained it properly :S

I'm using MVC 2.0 in an ASP.NET application using NHibernate. I have a working View, Controller and data access layer using NHibernate that is able to display and save an entity with a relationship to another mapped entity: Person -- > Location It's using the HTML helper HTML.DropDownListFor() to display a list of all Locations. The user is able to select one of the Locations from the list, and press save. The default model binder correctly sets the value of the Location on the Person entity being saved. This location is an nhibernate mapped entity, and is instantiated and has the id value that was selected in the dropdown list. Obviously, since the dropdown list that holds locations only has the ids of the locations, the rest of the values for the location are null. This is OK. I am only trying to save the Person with a reference to an existing location.
So, here comes the complication. We have a need to change the relationship between the two entities. Now the Person can have a reference to many locations. Person.Locations will be an IList My question is, how do you get the default model binder to take selections from a multiselect dropdown and populate an IList. I've managed to save collections of entities in the past using the syntax [index].PropertyName as explaing by Phil Haacked .... [URL]
The issue here is that I have only a dropdown list, and it will post back to the modelbinder a repeating key with different values:
Person.Location.Id: 2
Person.Location.Id: 4
Person.Location.Id: 5
This, unfortunately, doesn't work. the Location list keeps coming back Null. Our UI guy is using a slick JQuery pluggin to display the items in the select list, so I'd rather not have to use a different UI.

The EditItemTemplate does not even load when I click the edit button on my FormView control, but I don't get an error message either.
Does anyone have an example of a formview and a gridview master detail relationship in c# ?
The gridview datasource is a datatable and the gridview is inside of the edititemtemplate of the formview.
In what event of the formview do you bind the gridview datasource?
i have a FormView, it renders fields from a SQLServer database but also much static text specific to the database value I get. I dont know if this can be done in the code behind and put all this in a function . I put it in my formview

I have seen a solution online but it is using LINQ and I am not familiar with it. I need to find the selected value of the drop down lists.
I've seen this before, I fixed long time ago and now cannot remember how I did :) My store procedure won't update the record because the sql field 'itemId' is being passed as ZERO always.
