Debugging - Copying Project Files With Code To Server?
Jan 6, 2011
I know you can copy a Website intact to the server and have it run normally (security and compilation time aside). What about the projects that are in the solution? [whose dll's are copied to the bin when built]. Is there a way to copy the projects' code files to the server as well?
My goal is to be able to debug [by modifying code in the project if needed] directly on the server without having to install an IDE [or keep building on dev machine and copying over dlls]. I can debug/modify the website files, but not the projects.
is there any way to copy/transfer files directly from client to ftp server through my web application? user will select files through fileupload control.
I am converting an old asp project to a new .NET project. Now, all vb code are inside aspx files, and we are on the process of moving all vb script from aspx files to .vb files. My problem is, I can't debug the vb script inside most of the aspx files. All my friends don't have this problem. I think the problem is with vb text editor.
I am using Visual Studio 2008.
Is there anyway, I can make visual studio understand that aspx files have vb script inside them.
I have been struggling with an issue that sounds like it should be quite common but I can't seem to get the thing working no matter how much I research it!
I am using an AJAX file uploader to upload files (up to 100MB) to the webserver and when the user clicks a button to complete navigate to the next page, I then attempt to move the files off the webserver onto a file server on Page_Load. Both servers are WinServer 2003. There just isn't enough space on the webserver to hold all the uploads once we go live with this solution so I have to get the files off the webserver.
Uploading the file and creating a new subdirectory on the webserver (to hold the file) works no problem at all. When I do the file copy to our file server locally on VS2008, again, no problem. However, when I delopy to the live server and try the same thing, the upload happens ok, but the file copy does not. I get an UnauthorizedAccessException. I don't have access to the webserver myself (but can request it if absolutely necessary) and our file server sits within the same domain (Active Directory).
I do not want to use Impersonation at a high level (web.config), so I tried it programmatically for the purposes of the copy file but it did not work. I used one of our general clerical accounts to pass in the credentials and gave full permission to this account on the file server to create/modify files.
I have created roles and users using ASP.NET configurations for login validations, it works fine if I run my application within project but when I publish my site and try to run from my Inetpub it giving this error. I tried all shorts of solutions posted in website but nothing worked for me.
"Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in copying database files. The connection will be closed"
I had an ASP.net project and I've copied and pasted the source files to another computer, but when I try and run them on this computers localhost:

i am trying to work up with captcha in my sign up page.Having a google search,i found a .dll which i implemented in my project and it worked fine. Now i want to know that is it a good idea to download the dll files and use it in the project instead of writing the whole code from the scratch? What are the disadvantages of using a dll instead of writing up the entire code form the scratch?
i want to copy the entire folder along with its contents from the client machine to the server where the application is deployed. i am using asp.net 3.5.
Lately it's been taking about 15-30 seconds for my site to respond after copying new files into the bin folder. I do updates throughout the day to fix bugs, add new features, etc. It used to only take a couple seconds.
I have 4 files that get copied into the bin directory regularly. 2 DLLs and 2 PDB.s I use debug mode (I prefer it for the errors since right now I'm updating frequently), but have also tried release mode and it didn't make a difference. 3 files are 1MB and the other is 400KB. I've also cleaned and re-built but still the same.
It was only taking a couple seconds for the app to restart until a day or two ago. I'm not sure what changed. This is an active site so having a long delay is a problem. I've been tempted to try an iisreset, but that'll really create a problem for users on the site.
This is with IIS6, Win 2003, and .NET 3.5.
I looked in the .NET temp folder and it's not filled with garbage.
I am new to MVC. I am using MVC and VS2010. I am trying to publish my website to a remote server. All files are copied except some static pages i have kept inside a folder. for e.g. i have a folder named Content. I have around 5 .pdf files inside this folder and also a .css. When i do Build->Publish <appname> all the files including the .css is copied but not the .pdfs.
I get this error when I hit F5 in VS 2008. I have checked that Windows authentication is enabled on the site and it is. I can mannully attach the debugger to the IIS process and it works. What could be wrong? I have tried alot of things without success.
I'm trying to debug my web application on my localhost machine in Visual Studio 2010 and I keep getting this error: "unable to start debugging on web server. The Microsoft Visual Studio remote debugging monitor(MSVSMON.exe) does not appear to be running on the remote computer."
Is there a way I can turn this off as I'm not trying to make any attempts debugging remotely.
Apparently, DNN installations do not like to be precompiled (they won't be able to find any localized strings then). Our installation is safely put in SVN, which means I cannot just copy the whole directory. To publish everything, I need to copy the whole website directory without the SVN files and directories. So far, I've been messing with good old DOS commands, which is time consuming and error prone.
an MS-Built script or step to do just this? Or can I do this using default Visual Studio 2010 commands?
I have several web sites, all of which use the same JavaScript library. How can I "reference" this library from each of my web sites? If I just import the library into my web site in Visual Studio, I get in trouble as soon as the library changes, because I then have to update it in all web sites manually. It would be much easier to place the library in an external folder and just reference it from my web sites. How can I do this with Visual Studio?
When I turn on Code Coverage in my test settings, on a project that references the Unity DI container I get the following error:
Cannot initialize the ASP.NET project'{Project Name}'.
The event log specifies the following reason:
Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Practices.Unity, Version=2.0.414.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. Strong name signature could not be verified.
I put a breakpoint on a Page_Load method for a .aspx page and I'm getting the following error when trying to run in debug mode:Quote:The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document.I checked the "Modules" window and the DLL for this project is not listed there, but it does list all the DLLs for the other projects in the solution. I also checked web.config and verified that debug="true".
I have two projects: A web application project, that has a webpage that hosts a Silverlight application, as well as a web service A Silverlight application project, the one hosted in the above web application
If I debug the Silverlight application, it wants to run this with a generated web page, which will of course not start my web application, and web service calls fails due to some cross-site security model. So even if I have the web application running, the Silverlight application won't use it.
If I debug the Web application (that is, set it as a start project and hit Debug), then the Silverlight application is apparently correctly hosted, but I can't debug it. Any breakpoints in it shows up as those hollow circles.
So what am I doing wrong? How should I configure my projects so that I can start the web application, host my Silverlight application, and debug it?
I'm betting it is one of those "dough" moments when someone tells me, but I can't figure it out.
This is Visual Studio 2008, .NET 3.5 and Silverlight 3.
When I run my project from Visual Studio, my webpage comes up normally, and about 5-10 seconds later, a duplicate one appears as well. (not that hard to close the second one) I just thought I'd ask if anyone knows why it would do this.
By the way: It only seems to do this when I already have a browser window open (not including my project's webpage browser window).
Is it possible to debug a Web Setup Project, specifically its custom action code, by setting breakpoints and walking through the code? How does one do this?
I am running Visual Studio 2010 (as Admin), IIS 7 on Windows 7 x64. I am able to run the ASP.NET web site in IIS 7 without debugging just fine, but when I press F5 to debug it, I get: Unable to start debugging on the web server. Could not start ASP.NET debugging. More information may be available by starting the project without debugging. Unfortunately the help link is not helping me much and leads down a heck of a large tree of things. I checked the following:
Security requirements — I don't recall having to do anything special before. The worker process in IIS7 is w3wp.exe. It says that if it's running as ASPNET or NETWORK SERVICE I must have Administrator privileges to debug it. How do I find out if I need to change something here? Web site Property Pages > Start Options > Debuggers > ASP.NET is checked. Use custom server is set to the URL of the site (which works fine without debugging). Debugging is enabled in web.config. Application is using ASP.NET 3.5 (I want to move to 4.0 eventually but I have some migration to deal with). Application pool: Classing .NET AppPool (also tried DefaultAppPool). Surely it shouldn't be that hard to install IIS, VS, create a web site, and start testing it?
I am having a simple web site created using VS.NET 2003 using .NET Framework 1.1 The web site project builds properply. When I hit F5 (to debug) it displays "Error while trying to run project" message. I am able to debug console and windows service applications. Recently I installed VS.NET 2010 (.NET Framework 4.0). I think prior to this it was working fin. ENV: Windows XP and IIS 5.1
I migrating a large asp.net webform site to MVC. I want to mix match old asp.net web form and asp.net mvc together for sometime and gradually convert the webform model to pure mvc model.
So i copied all aspx/ascx files from the old webform site to my mvc project. Now when i compile, i get build error. Code behind files can not find any server controls inside their aspx pages.
I can solve this problem by adding a desinger.cs file for each of the aspx, ascx file but that simply is not viable for me since i am dealing with hundreds of aspx pages and user controls and i can not afford to manually add a designer file for each of them.
