Scanning A Directory Of Documents On The Web Server And Building?
Aug 24, 2010
How do I do the old chestnut of scanning a directory of documents and building a web page that displays the list with built in links to the documents. Also the usual UPLOAD and DELETE functions would be good in order to add more or remove documents from the web form.
I come from a ColdFusion background where this would easily be acheived with the <CFDIRCTORY> and <CFFILE> tags...... !!
Am using VB rather than C#.

I have seen some examples on other sites , but since im not familiar enough with DirectoryInfo and Files from the System.IO namespace, i dont know how to change it to fit my needs. So i found a very simple example that works, but i have some questions.
Here is the code i found:
[Code]....
This works great and lists the files in my root directory.
#1 - What i need to know is how to accomplish the same thing but in a format i can control, this code simply displays the files at the top of my page and pushes everything down. So does anyone know of a good and simple tutorial written in C#?
#2 - I also need to be able to setup the code so that certain files within the directories are not displayed, as in the code behind files and other files to be determined by the business.

I have 4 links on my asp.net page which open documents on an internal server which is behind firewall. I realized this was incorrectly designed as these links do work while i am the internal network they would not work for an end user accessing the web site outside the network as the links point to a resource on a secure server which is not accessible outside the network.

I am making a document management system in which user has to save documents. I don't want the user to browse and select the document and then upload it. I just want them to scan it there and then save it. So i guess I will have to interface a scanner. how I can do it in asp .net web application.

I have an ASP web Applicaton using C# that runs great on my local host where I can access the documents via Fully qualified path (e.g., C://MyProjects/MyProject/File.xls).However once I publish this to a server (and it is a virtual server) I can no longer provide a fully qualified path name I can only give something like (//server/project/File.xls - which is the path I publish to) and it doesn't like this at all. First it doesn't publish the documents to the server even though I added them to my project. So I put them on the server manually and even tried adding the documents as embedded resources but that doesn't allow me to edit and open them as needed. This is really a pain. Why can I not just put them in the file path and access them using "File.xls" like I used to in the old days? I don't like this change at all. It should not take me a day to figure out how to access a document on a server.

I am wondering what the best strategy is for accepeting http uploaded files on a web server in a safe way? I have access to scanning software which will quarantine suspect files, but not really sure what the best practice is for this kind of thing?This is somewhat of a pest as the form data and the uploaded file form a logical unit - the fact the files must be scanned (pottentially quarantined) means I would need some kind of callback, post upload mechanism for handling this.
Is there a preferred way (or peice of software) for handling thsi kind of thing?Happy to elaborate of anyone wants to comment or assist? I'm aware I can limit file size, file extension etc, so really just concerned about stopping viruses entering the web server and/or network. And I guess to do so in awy that allows me to interact with scanning software such that I get feedback in relatively real time??

I render HTML returned from an ajax call and currently uses simple html controls and the string that is returned from the ajax call looks like this:
string s = "<tr><td><a href="#">MyLink</a></td></tr>";
Now, on the click on these links I need to do some processing on the server side to determine where I need to navigate to and for other information. My understanding is that I cannot use <asp:linkbutton /> in this html string I am building. How do I make a server side call if i don't want to use ajax.

our project using active directory on vb.net 1.1 and server 2003. We will be upgrade to vb.net 3.5 and server 2008.
In this case, 1. We convert all vb.net 1.1 application to vb.net 3.5 and run on server 2003.
Then later on, 2. Our server will upgrade to server 2003 to server 2008.
I would linke to know after doing above two phase will effect on Active Directory code setting in our program.
Can I conver to 1 to 1 withut changing anything in vb.net and server?

My intention is to give the user a flexible user control on a master page that does the following:
When navigating, a child page will pass the URL (with querystring) and PageTitle to the user control. The user control will take those two parameters and insert them as a "breadcrumb" object at first index of a List<breadcrumb> collection
This part works fine through the use of a Repeater with a LinkButton contained in an ItemTemplate. The user sees each of the pages he has been visiting in descending order, the provided benefit is a quick way to re-open records they have recently modified or created.
The part I'm having trouble handling is what happens when the user clicks the LinkButton, which is that the child page adds a new reference to the URL at the beginning of the List<> collection and I cannot seem to control the behavior of removing the LinkButton before it gets re-created. What I've tried doing is:
List<>.RemoveAt(RepeaterCommandEventArgs.Item.ItemIndex);
Repeater1.Controls.Clear();
Repeater1.DataSource = List<>;
Repeater1.DataBind();
While that should work, my CreateBreadCrumb(string url, string title) function gets called by the child page before the UserControl detects the Repeater1_ItemCommand event, so in effect it appears that the wrong ItemIndex is being used for removal.

I'm currently writing a website in ASP.NET MVC, and my database (which doesn't have any data in it yet, it only has the correct tables) uses SQL Server 2008, which I have installed on my development machine. I connect to the database out of my application by using the Server Explorer, followed by LINQ to SQL mapping.
Once I finish developing the site, I will move it over to my hosting service, which is a virtual hosting plan. I'm concerned about whether using the SQL Server setup that is currently working on my development machine will be hard to do on the production server, as I'll have to import all the database tables through the hosting control panel. I've noticed that it is possible to create a SQL Server database from inside Visual Studio. It is then stored in the App_Data directory.
Does it make sense to move my SQL Server DB out of SQL Server and into the App_Data directory as an .mdf file? If so, how can I move it? I believe this is called the Detach command, is it not? Are there any performance/security issues that can occur with a .mdf file like this? Would my intended setup work OK with a typical virtual hosting plan? I'm hoping that the .mdf database won't count against the limited number of SQL Server databases that can be created with my plan.

I am using System.directory services namespace in framework 2 to query active directory. I have used fixed user account impersonisation in the web.config file, find the code:
<identity impersonate="true" userName="enterprise ang09" password="Telcome123"/>
<authentication mode="Windows"/>
I have disabled anonymous access in IIS. Also i have given Read & write access to the account tang09 for the website virtual directory and Microsoft.NET folder located in windows folder. But still i get prompted for the domain username and password to access the website.
