Web Development - Use .NET With "Redirect After POST" Pattern?

Aug 24, 2010

I'm trying to implement Redirect After Post for the first time in ASP.NET. Assuming my business objects may take several seconds to a minute to complete, in what order, and what syntax do I use?

For example:User POST's
Server issues Server.Transfer or Response.Redirect
Server does something that takes a minute or two Thread.Sleep

MVC :: Storing State In 'TempData' When Performing The PRG (Post-Redirect-Get) Pattern?

Jul 29, 2010

I'm learning about storing state in 'TempData' when performing the PRG (Post-Redirect-Get) pattern. It says TempData stores session state on the server. I'm wondering if this is safe or unsafe in a load-balanced server farm?

Are there precautions to be taken with TempData? Or can we happily program against it with abandon. Just wanting to avoid the frights we all got with the Session back in the day with ASP.NET of old.

Web Development - Post Redirect Get In .net?

Mar 1, 2011

I'm interested in implementing PRG in my website for some forms I've created. At present they postback to themselves, and obviously refreshing these pages posts the data in duplicate. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good tutorial of how I can code this into my site? I understand the logic but am not sure exactly where to start.

MVC :: AsyncController Gripes / Working Pattern For Converting A GET-POST-GET Pattern To Asny?

Feb 23, 2010

Does anyone have a working pattern for converting a GET-POST-GET pattern to asny?

I'm encountering the following issues:

1. You cannot mix Sync and Async action methods SubmitForm(), SubmitFormAsync(bool? confirm), SubmitFormCompleted() ... (because the resolver gets all confused ... it doesn't use the HTTP verb to decide who to target. BTW: I think that's poor design, or a bug)

2. Renaming the get method name to something else eg: SubmitFormConfirmation(), SubmitFormAsync(bool? confirm), SubmitFormCompleted() would be very awkward if it works ... because you have to doctor the <form markup to specify an action name.

3. You cannot give them all async names SubmitFormAsync(), SubmitFormAsync(bool? confirm), submitFormCompleted(), because the call just keeps malfunctioning. It sometime even behaves as if you are requesting a delete of something.

Can someone give an insight from an actually working sample.

Pattern For Retrieving Complex Object Graphs With Repository Pattern With Entity Framework

Oct 13, 2010

We have an ASP.NET MVC site that uses Entity Framework abstractions with Repository and UnitOfWork patterns. What I'm wondering is how others have implemented navigation of complex object graphs with these patterns. Let me give an example from one of our controllers:

[code]....

It's a registration process and pretty much everything hangs off the POCO class Person. In this case we're caching the person through the registration process. I've now started implementing the latter part of the registration process which requires access to data deeper in the object graph. Specifically DPA data which hangs off Legal inside Country.

The code above is just mapping out the model information into a simpler format for the ViewModel. My question is do you consider this fairly deep navigation of the graph good practice or would you abstract out the retrieval of the objects further down the graph into repositories?

C# - Redirect Without Post Back?

Jul 6, 2010

I have a user registration form. Here I have link to another page (card info page) which has to be filled for the registration. User fills the few fields in the user registration form and click on the link that takes to card info page. When user clicks the link in card info page to navigate back to registration page, the previous details entered in registration got vanished. So I need to redirect from card info page to registration page without postback. How can i accomplish that?Response.Redirect() is used for redirection.

$.post Form With Facebox And Redirect

Oct 5, 2010

Using Facebox with .NET (Web Forms) is painful--this primarily HTML site was designed by someone else. I may have IIS (7.5) issues as well. This Facebox pop-up is in a separate file, login.html, that is called from index.html:

$k('a[rel*=example_2]').facebox_1({
loading_image : '/images/loading.gif',
close_image : '/images/closelabel.gif'
});

and the link to open it

<a href="login.html" title="Log In" rel="example_2" id='login'>Log In </a>

The form to be submitted with username and password (login.html):

<form name="login" method="post" action="#" onsubmit="return false;">

and after it's validated (this is working), it posts to login.aspx (login.html):

[code]....

The form posts. I can debug it in Visual Studio in the Page_Load method of login.aspx. The last line of the Page_Load method is:

Response.Redirect("welcomepage.html");

But, the Facebox pop-up remains. Firebug shows the post, It hits the Page_Load method of login.aspx, and the Facebox pop-up doesn't go anywhere. BUT, Firebug shows welcomepage.html rendered twice in the Response tab of the XHR (huh? why XHR?) request. I thought $.post did a regular postback. And why isn't my browser actually redirecting.

Attempted Fix

If I change the form in login.html to action='login.aspx', I get a 405.0 error method not allowed (but, it's trying to post to index.html, HUH?). And I can't figure out how to fix this in IIS 7.5 on Windows 7. I get this error in Visual Studio and when deploying locally to IIS. I had read it may have to do with script mapping, handlers, or the fact that I'm posting from an but I can't find a sufficient fix.

Now that the next version of ASP.NET MVC is being prototyped and previewed (ASP.NET MVC 3 Preview 1 came out a couple of weeks ago), I wonder if we should call the attention of the Core Dev team (S Hanselman, Phil Haack and all) to this "feature."there a easy/non tacky way of associating subdomains &#8594; areas?Something like:

C# - Allow POST To "static" Files On Development Server?

Mar 23, 2011

I have an issue where a service needs to POST to the root of my ASP.net application that is running in my Visual Studio development instance (/myapp/ for example). However, ASP.net complains that "The HTTP verb POST used to access path '/myapp/' is not allowed.

How can I enable post to this path? Would URL rewriting be better (rewirte /myapp/ to /myapp/Default.aspx)?

EDIT:

I was just able to provide a work around by adding this to my Global.asax:

void Application_BeginRequest(object sender, EventArgs e) {
string p = Request.Path;
if (p.Equals("/myapp/")) {
var query = "?" + Request.QueryString.ToString();
if (query.Equals("?")) {
query = "";
}
Context.RewritePath("/myapp/Default.aspx" + query);
}
}

But I haven't tested this much and I am curious if there is a better solution. This also won't work when deployed to IIS.

POST Form Server-side - Redirect The User To This Blank Page?

Jun 11, 2010

Currently whenever I need to send a request to a payment-gateway, for example, I redirect my page to another page on my website which has a form with several hidden fields. I then pre-populate the values of these fields server-side, and specify in the body tag something like 'onload="form.submit();"'

However, I'm wondering, rather than redirecting to this page, is there anyway that all this data can be collected and POSTed to the payment-gateway server-side?This will cut out the need to redirect the user to this blank page, and make everything a bit more tidy.

Is It Wise To Mix MVC Development And Web Form Development In The Same Group Of Products?

Oct 20, 2010

We have a largely asp.net web form team (With some Oracle developers thrown in).

Question 1:

Is it a good idea to start using asp.net MVC which will mean redevelopment of a number of standard controls for not much benefit.

Question 2:

Is it a good idea to hire developers where there most recent skills are with asp.net MVC?

I doubt there is any benefit adopting MVC now, given the 100+ applications in this suite of products, and the maintenance/rework this will cause. Given this, is there any particular reason to hire MVC developers, as they won't be hitting the ground running, which is what I need now.
