DataSource Controls :: Microsoft Matrix Framework DataGrid - Update Command - Convert Empty Strings To NULL?

Sep 30, 2010

we have a AutoGenerateColumns-enabled WmxDataGrid in which we are able to update table rows in a DataBase connected with a SqlDataSource.

Each time we clear a field an empty string is written to the database where we want to write DBNull values.

At the moment we generate the update string via UPDATE... SET.. and the SQL Server function NULLIF(value, '').

Works proper but when I want to add the values to e.NewValues in BeginUpdate event I'm not able to read the values from the auto generated text boxes. How do I do that? Is there an easier way to automatically convert empty strings to NULL values?

WebMatrix :: Check For Null / Empty Strings On Dynamic Objects?

Aug 20, 2010

What is the proper way to check for null or empty strings on dynamic objects? This is the only solution I've found so far:

if (admin.PasswordHash.GetType() == typeof(DBNull) || admin.PasswordHash == string.Empty)

If the field is null, the object returned is DBNull.Value, but if the field is empty string, it's return as a System.String object. This makes it impossible to do regular "admin.PasswordHash == DBNull.Value" check, as that will fail whenever the field has been set to empty string. Is my example the right (and only) way to go?

DataSource Controls :: Entity Framework - Send The Values To Be Inserted As Strings To The DAL?

Feb 5, 2010

I've sucefully created a method to insert values through EF, but i've a question (maybe, a newbie question).

Should i send the values to be inserted as strings to the DAL, and then i create the object there or should i create the object in View Layer and then send him to DAL?

Example 1 (DAL):

[Code]....

Example 1 (View Layer, on a click button for example):

[Code]....

Or should i receive the strings in DAL like this: public bool NoticiasInsert(string tituloPT, string tituloEN, string descricaoPT, string descricaoEN)

Then i create the object cdcModel.noticias and set the fields there with the strings values.

What do you advice me to do? I know that both ways works, but i'm trying to develope with better patterns (i don't know if this is the exacly word, sorry my bad english)

cdcModel.noticias campos = new cdcModel.noticias();
campos.tituloPT = "a";
campos.tituloEN = "b";
campos.descricaoPT = "a";
campos.descricaoEN = "a";
if (DAL.NoticiasInsert(campos)

DataSource Controls :: Create Update Command In Code Behind?

Feb 3, 2011

I have a detailsview which I am populating using a SQLDATASOURCE, which is bound to a table in a SQL db. Because the number of columns in the table will change, I am using SELECT * from [TABLENAME] to populate the view, this works fine.

My problem is that I need to also be able to update the table and I thought the best way was to generate the updatecommand in the code behind. This is no problem, code is as follows:

[Code]....

But the next stage is to create the relevant parameters for the update command. Does anybody have any thoughts on this? All of the information I have found for the updateParamater reference knowing the final value.

What I really need to do is the code behind equivalent of

<asp:Parameter Name="PARAMETERNAME" Type="Int32" />

Not sure whether this is possible.

Forms Data Controls :: Displaying A Null Or Empty Cell For A Null Datetime Database Value In Gridview?

Dec 6, 2010

I have setup my business object to have a create_date and edit_date members both datetime datatypes. My company want to display the create_date and edit_date fields in a gridview for each transaction. The problem i have is that after insterting a record it will have a valid create_date but no edit_date and when displayed in the gridview it defaults to datetime.minvalue (My default). How on earth do i show an empty field in my gridview for a null datetime field in the database?

I am using similar architecture to the Imar Spaanjaars example of a tiered solution. With a few small tweeks it has worked well for me for ages. I am passing a List<Database> to my object datasource which connects to my gridview.

DataSource Controls :: All Parameters Null In Update Of SQLDataSource?

Sep 23, 2010

I have a FormView which is bound to an SQLDataSource. When a user clicks on a save button the form, I need to write any changes made to the FormView back to the table.

I have a Stored Procedure on my MSSQL 2005 database that should be executed when the user clicks on the save button.

It appears the Update is firing, but when I trap the DbCommand object in the SQLDataSource's 'Updating' event, all of the parameters that should be passed to the Stored Procedure are coming through as NULLs. Consequently, the Stored Procedure isn't updating anything.

In the click event of the save button I'm explicitly firing the SQLDataSource's Update method:

[Code]....

The parameters in the SQLDataSource <UpdateParameters></UpdateParameters> section appear to be correct.

Can anyone give me an idea on what to investigate to figure out why it appears the Update is only picking up NULLs?

Forms Data Controls :: Gridview Will No Longer Show The Data - Datagrid Datasource = Null

Feb 25, 2011

I am familiar with populating a gridview with data. I am able to bind the Data pulled from the database into the gridview

gridview.DataSource = myDataTable;
gridview.Databound.

If I write the following code, teh gridview will no longer show the data

gridview.DataSource = null;
gridview.Databound.

My question is , I want to make the same thing with a user control that contain a gridview. when I use the user control in an aspx page, I am able to populate it with data, but when I try to make this code, the Datasource does not show, instead, I see .DV. So I tried this code but then , I do not see DataSource property instead I see DV (DataView), when I put .DV = null, I get an error message that the object is not in existed. any idea how to clear the user control gridview from its data.
