Debugging .Net 3.5 Code Running Under A .Net 4.0 App Pool?
Sep 21, 2010
I have trawled the internet - to no avail. Woe is me.I have a .Net website running under a .Net framework 4.0 App Pool. The website references various assemblies that have been compiled for .Net 3.5.I have ensured that identical versions of the dll's and pdb's are in the bin folder of the the 3.5 code that I am trying to debug, and the reference path of the 4.0 web site. I.e. the code that I am trying to debug matched the assemblies that are loaded into the app pool's process.
When I attach the debugger using VS2008 with the solution for the .Net 3.5 code open, the breakpoints that I have set are marked as invalid (i.e. marked with an exclamation mark). When I hit refresh on a browser page that invokes the code that I am trying to debug, VS2008 raises an unmanaged code exception.I have researched In-Process Side-by-Side code execution, which is what is occurring in this instance, and is working very well; but for the life of me I cannot find any information on debugging in this scenario. It is not an option to convert the .Net 3.5 projects to use .Net 4.0, nor is it possible to convert them to use VS2010 and leave them targeting .Net framework 3.5

We have a website that calls a utility from the command line to create thumbnails places them in a directory and then the page will display the contents of this folder to the user. The utility seems to only work when we run the application pool under an administrative account, we have tried the network service, local system, and local service all to no avail.Just wondered if anyone had an opinion on how secure/unsecure it would be if we ran the website under the administrative machine account? Does this open up a massive secuurity hole etc is it that likely that we are comprimising the network.

We are trying to add a new page to a running web application. such that a new dll and aspx file are being added. I've setup break points in the code file and Built the application transfering the dll to the remote machine bin file and the aspx page to a folder within the web application. Note this folder is not in the same folder hierarchy as it built in. I'm not sure if thats the problem. Basically we are appending new functionality to a web application.I've copied the correct Remote Debug Monitor to the server and have it running.

I have two systems (System A & System B) both are windows xp.
System A is 32 bit operating system with more Memory so I Installed Visual studio here.
System B is 16 bit with low memory and some peripheral(Finger Print Reader, Thermal Printer) attached.
Now I need to develop a application for System B. Peripherals are attached with system B Only so i need to debug the application which is running in system B. But I cannot install visual studio in system B. Now how can I do that?

Is there any way to debug, or just simply run an ASP.Net page or project without using Local Host? F5 or Ctrl F5 sometimes load the page fairly fast and sometimes it just does not happen. (At least not within my span of patience.) It seems that when it stalls, if I close the browser or click Stop Debugging, and then try again, it happens! But it is never consistent and usually frustrating.

i have 2 problems with running&debugging my web projects using visual studio 2008 pro :
1.when choosing to run without debugging , IE is being opened (which is ok , since i chose it to be the default one to be opened via VS ) , and yet when i close IE , it is being opened once again .
2.when choosing to debug , visual studio crashes and IE is being frozen (can only be killed via task manager) ,even when i don't have the "debugger;" string in the javascript code.
i've tried to re-install VS , and also uninstall it and then re-install it, but it didn't help. i have windows xp sp3 home edition 32bit. what should i do? EDIT:about #1 , it seems that from some reason, VS didn't install "Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component" , and this is also why i had another problem of not being able to use the design/split mode . after installing this component, it seems that IE doesn't run twice anymore. however, i still have crashes of VS when trying to debug (problem #2) ,even thogh script debugging is enabled on IE. the weird thing is that on maxthon2 , which uses IE engine, debugging works just fine.

In Visual Studio, when I click > Debug, > Start Without Debugging, (with my default browser set to IE), the application starts but it opens 2 IE browser instances. It opens 1 IE instance to start BUT when I close it, it launches another browser instance with the same start page. This bug is repeatable and consistent behaviour, that I can reproduce on-demad in IE.
(In some other minor variations, it seems that depending upon exactly how I start it, it will open 1 browser instance with 2 tabs, each tab having the startup page in it. However, this is not yet repeatable or consistent. It has happened; but, as of now, I am uncertain as the the exact steps to reproduce this particular variation of the anomaly.)
I am using Internet Explorer 8 (IE8).
I am using on Windows 7 32-bit.
I am using Visual Studio 2008 Standard.
I only have 1 startup project defined in Solution properties.
I have all Toolbars And Extensions set to "Disabled" in IE.
I have turned off "Automatic Crash Recovery" in IE.
(This does NOT happen in FireFox.)

I'm creating a website in Visual Studio 2010. I would like to use Visual Studio for C# debugging, but it also uses Visual Studio as JavaScript debugger. Is there a way to disable script debugging for Asp.Net website projects? I run my projects by hitting F5 in my Visual Studio. (I've noticed that when I attach the debugger manually, I can specify the type of stuff I would like to debug.) Note: I would like to debug, but not with Visual Studio. The developer toolbar is enough.

If I create a new thread on an ASP.NET page the IsThreadPoolThread property is true.
First question is, is it from ASP.NET pool or CLR pool ?
Second question is, if it is from ASP.NET pool then how to create a thread from CLR and don't use ASP.NET pool ?

How can i capture Application pool recycle event in asp.net c# code so that when recycle event occurs i can make a post back or refresh the page in the code ?. Our Application sessionstate mode is StateServer which helps me in not loosing the session data but still i need to refresh the page at server side only on this particluar event. The reason is at the client side javascript webform_DoCallBack doesnot fire when there is application pool recycle and thus website stops getting updates.we have a timer set to 15 minutes when webform_DoCallBack fires and fecthes updates for the page and displays it.

I am converting an old asp project to a new .NET project. Now, all vb code are inside aspx files, and we are on the process of moving all vb script from aspx files to .vb files. My problem is, I can't debug the vb script inside most of the aspx files. All my friends don't have this problem. I think the problem is with vb text editor.
I am using Visual Studio 2008.
Is there anyway, I can make visual studio understand that aspx files have vb script inside them.
can't debug the code
can debug the code

So in my website, I use jquery to fetch data through ajax. AS part of the ajax response, some of the javascript code comes as well which is executed. The problem is how to debug this javascript in firebug or other tools. This is my experience so far: putting debugger; doesn't work For some javascript, can't set the breakpoint as that script is not yet loaded. even if this new javascript calls some other function thats already loaded (i.e. i can see it in firebug and set a breakpoint), that breakpoint on that function is still not triggered
However, the javascript does executes normally and even things like console.log works but cant seem to debug it.

I know you can copy a Website intact to the server and have it run normally (security and compilation time aside). What about the projects that are in the solution? [whose dll's are copied to the bin when built]. Is there a way to copy the projects' code files to the server as well?
My goal is to be able to debug [by modifying code in the project if needed] directly on the server without having to install an IDE [or keep building on dev machine and copying over dlls]. I can debug/modify the website files, but not the projects.

I am working on an ASP.NET project. When I am debugging, I often want to switch back from my browser to Visual Studio (2008) and edit some code. Visual Studio then won't let me edit the code, unless I explicitly quit debugging first.
Is there any way to configure Visual Studio such that is automatically stops debugging and allow me to edit the code, or do I have to stop it manually each and every time?
Disabling Edit and Continue does allow me to edit the code, but this does not force VS to stop debugging...

When I right click on ASP.NET development server, it says http://localhost:1394/testing
as the ROOT URL. This does not go well with my code. I think the main reason is my code assumes it is in the root folder, and things start breaking when that is not the case. If I deploy this website, then it all works, but I lose my debugging capabilities. Is there a way I can make it skip the name of the folder (which is "testing" in this case)?I am using virtual URL. Things break on virtual urls, not on static ones. (But virtual url works fine when deployed, and make sure it is in the root folder, otherwise it will not work.) [URL]

Not sure why this is happening. Every time I try to debug an Asp.Net page it will eventually go into assembly code showing
the following lines on the top:
AjaxControlToolkit.ExtenderControlBase.OnLoad(System.EventArgs)

I do have this line in page and that was never changed:

migrating my ASP.NET project from IIS 6 to IIS 7.5 I came across an issue with the Managed Pipeline Mode set to 'Integrated'.I have a Global.asax file in my web root to initialize some objects, gather data etc., however I am not able to hit breakpoints in the associated code-behind file (VS 2008). The code is executing very well (as I can tell from Eventlog), but I want to step into all that initializing there and need to have the debugger attached properly.Everything is working as expected in Classic pipeline mode. Since I'd like to benefit from Integrated Mode features in the future I wonder if I have to give up the ability to debug my Application start and error events...

I'm trying to debug my web application on my localhost machine in Visual Studio 2010 and I keep getting this error: "unable to start debugging on web server. The Microsoft Visual Studio remote debugging monitor(MSVSMON.exe) does not appear to be running on the remote computer."
Is there a way I can turn this off as I'm not trying to make any attempts debugging remotely.
