State Management :: How To Control And Add Extra History Points In IE8 Back Button
Jun 23, 2010
I wasn't sure where to post this type of question so here you go. The title says it all really I'm using the Microsoft.web.preview dll so that we can provide history support for the Ajax controls used in a .net 2.0 project. This works in IE6 but fails to function correctly in IE8 it appears to add additional history points when you attempt to navigate backwards through history.
Enter the page > Make a change using Ajax (add history point) > press back button you would expect to go back to initial page state but another two history points have been inserted between your initial page request and new your manually added history point. there is no where in the code that is adding these additional history points by accident. Remember it works perfectly under IE6. What are my options do I have to upgrade to 3.5 .net to make use of the history functionality built into the scriptmanager?

I have a repeator control which is displaying the search results and it contains 50 Records.Paging is Enabled for the Repeator control and hence i am able to see 10 records at a time.
Now my requirement is :
When ever the user clicks the browser back button after going to the the Last set of records from the result set (41-50 records) in the Repeator Control,the Page is displaying the First set of Records(1-10).
Expected Result :
Page has to display the Previous result set (31-40) after clicking the browser back button.

I have a page with a few usercontrols. from a usercontrol I will redirect to a new page(response.redirect). Now On pressing the back button I want the data to persist for the usercontrols as well. I have tried it out by overriding DeterminePostBackMode, LoadPageStateFromPersistenceMedium, and SavePageStateToPersistenceMedium but all data except the ones within the usercontrol persist. i feel what i have tried is ok for the page data but for usercontrol data do i need to do something else.
P.S: I understand that i could be storing all user controls value in a session but I am looking for another way because its going to be a huge task taking each controls values in a session. I am not using any dynamically loaded user controls. May be if I know of a way of saving and restoring viewstate for user controls it would work but..

I'm using 2 masterpages in my project.One master page is for login page and another one for the HomePage where user will go thro the options to reach other pages from home page..The thing is,i have "Logout" button in my home page.When i click on the logout button,the page will be redirected to "LoginPage.aspx". After redirecting to login page,when i click on browser back button,the previous page is displaying but it should not display to user since i'm doing sensitive transactions in all pages...
I tried using following code
Code:
Response.Expires = 0;
Response.Cache.SetNoStore();
Response.AppendHeader("Pragma", "no-cache");
Page.Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.NoCache);
but it's not working...

we have a web form with check boxes on.
When we click our back button the page only returns to the previous state (un checking the check boxes one by one after each click). We would like it to go back to the previous page and remember the history of the page.
I've tried :
[Code]....
but this just crashes the page.
our javascript button looks like this:
<input type="button" value="Back" onclick="history.go(-1)" />
(the browser back button does the same thing)

I want know, If an error has occurred and website is redirected to the Custom Error Page and is also logged out. If back button of the Mozilla browser is pressed, previous logged in page is displayed. I have also used
1.
Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.NoCache);
2.
Response.Cache.SetExpires(DateTime.Now);
in Page_init on Custom error page. Also set the values of .ASPXAUTH and other cookies to 1 but again page is not going to the Login Page. These cookies could also not be removed.

I'm using asp.net AJAX and history points with the ScriptManager and it works great. My only problem is that when I make non AJAX pages I have come to love url-rewriting with nice "hackable" urls. Without SecureHistoryState my url will look like for example [URL] where "/Home/Frontpage" is the page to show. I have seen on other web-pages with AJAX (maybe not asp.net) that the url will change into for example [URL] which is a lot nicer. Or if I could have[URL]I would be very happy. I don't need the history url to contain anything else than the page path. Is this at all possible with asp.net AJAX?

I have a website which contains several ajax enabled pages. I need to maintain state in each page. I have added historypoints in each page. My back button works fine as far as I am on single page. But when I visit different page and then click back button to come to original page, only the last history state for that page is loaded and all other seem to get wiped out. What I mean is, clicking back button again takes me to previous page instead of loading same page again from history point. Is there any way to maintain history points even when I visit different pages

I am trying to set history points for a form that posts to a second page. Both the first page and second page are content pages in a master page.The form is in an update panel and consists of several textboxes, one radiobutton group of two radiobuttons and one ajax calendar control. The last two textboxes are a zipcode box and a county box. The county box is populated from a database table when the user fills in the zipcode in a textbox and tabs out or clicks in the next textbox.

I am attempting to retrofit a web application that had a rudimentary, yet mostly effective navigation infrastructure that, when properly utilized, allowed navigating forward and backward through AJAX states and other pages through the use of additional <asp:Button> objects labeled "Back" to perform special code for restoring previous states. There was an elaborate stack push and pop algorithm for this. The effect was very similar to what is described in Diagram 1 (AStatex refers to an AJAX related state of the page). The reason for this is so that it takes away the reliance on the contrived Back button and so that accidentally hitting the browser's back button or hitting the Backspace key won't cause a loss of state.

I am using the following code to ensure that the web pages in my website are not cached by the browser:
this.Response.Expires = 0;
this.Response.AppendHeader("Pragma", "no-cache");
this.Response.Cache.SetNoStore();
This is working fine & the browser displays a page with the message, "Warning. This page has expired....". Is there any way I can display a custom page instead of the default page shown by the browser?

Let me explain, describing the scenario:In a custom server control (in my case, derived from CompositeControl), in the overidden CreateChildControls method I create a complex tree of subcontrols, using information from a db.The db provides both information on which controls I need to create (the user interface's structure) and the data used to fill these controls.Than the user can interact with the control and change the data (that becomes different to what stored on db).
My custom control lives in the same page where there are other controls, obviously.And these controls can cause a postback at any time.What I need is that my custom control keeps the data entered by the user across these postback, without reverting to the original data and loose the user data entry.
Here is the first doubt:
1)I create the subcontrols dinamically in the CreateChildControls at any page refresh (both on first call than on postback).I know that the framework solves the reference between the posted data and the controls I create in the CreateChildControls in order to set properties and raise control events, but can you tell me when and how it actually does this? In which phase of page life cycle? What happens after the CreateChildControls?
A second doubt:2)If the user interface structure must change as a consequence of the data entered, I had to execute CreateChildControls twice (the first time to recreate the original interface to get the events and the second time to create the new interface)
In which phase of page/control lifecycle do I have to make the second call to CreateChildControls? I do it on Prerender now, but is it right or wrong, and why?

We have a web site that implements a custom SiteMapProvider using a User Control added in the master page. I need to be able to limit the sitemap nodes added depending on the logged in user, that is, certain users should not see certain sitemap nodes. Currently, the login processing code determines if users are in the certain category or role and then sets a value in session state, for example, Session["UserInRoleXXX"] = "Yes"; I tried changing the code in the user control to check the session state, but I got the following error: NullReferenceException ... Object reference not set to an instance of an object." Can session state be accessed in a user control?

Before I go the route of using hidden fields or something similar, is there any way to send back to the server changes to the disabled state of an ASP.net Button control? I have a Button that is initially enabled and I disable it via jQuery on the client. Works great. The only problem is when I do a PostBack the server still thinks the Button is enabled and sends back a response that changes it back to enabled. Why doesn't the ViewState send back the current disabled status of the Button? Is there a way to force it to postback the changes? Other ASP.net controls, like the CheckBox, do send back the state changes to the server. Seems odd to me.

I have a asp.net page that has a list of items. When one of the items from the list is clicked a details page is displayed. This details page has a link button to show a popup for history of the item. The details page also has a button with text 'Back'. The back button has onclick event set to "javascript:window.history.back();".
This back button works fine and goes back to the first page. However when the user is on the second page and opens the pop up by clicking on the link button, the back button stop working and displays Webpage has expired message.

Is there a way I ignore all gridviews events (sorting, paginating) when using the back command (history.back)?
For example:
The user is sorting my grid and when he presses the back button or a link with history.back he goes to the previous page, not the previous grid state.
Im not using ajax or update panel, Im not allowed to. It's a regular grid in an aspx.
