.net - Built An Internal Tool That Generates The Whole Data Access?

Oct 20, 2010

We have built an internal tool that generates the whole data access, each table has a class the represents it's data and all the common operations.(think lightweight Entity framework).These DataAccess objects always have a constructor that receives a connection string, and a Load function that receives a SqlDataReader.

Something like this:

class Customer
public string ConnStr;[code]...

Btw, we are interested in open sourcing our DataAccess generator, it's amazing - it allow very effecient access to DB objects + creates a javascript data access layer that gives you FULL CONTROL of your DB from javascript(ofcourse this has security implications which can be managed).If anyone here knows how to "open source" a project like this or any company that wants to join the development of this product - please feel free contacting me:

WCF / ASMX :: Custom Tool Error: Failed To Generate Code For The Service Reference 'CompanyService'

Aug 23, 2010

we have an existing application that is undergoing expansion. The new functionality is all written in Silverlight 4. As part of that expansion I gutted all the old Linq to SQL and put Entity Framework 4 into place. To do this I created a standard .net Class Library and added my edmx files there. Naturally, the business entities created by this cannot be used in Silverlight. So I created a Silverlight Class Library and added all the business entities to that Silverlight Class Library as linked files. I changed the name space to be the same.

So I have the following assembly / namespaces

Company.Project.Dal.csproj / Company.Project.Entities (.net 4 class library)

Company.Project.Entities.csproj / Company.Project.Entities (SL4 class library)

With this architecture I was able to share my business entities with my SL enabled web services, my projects, my silverlight projects. Really it's a beautiful thing.

Once this was done I added "message" classes to Company.Project.Dal and again shared them with the other entites using linked files. These messages are things like MyObjectRequest; they are classes that have properties that can set to the ID of the record in the database you want to get, a search string for filtering by last name, first name, etc. (This is in the style of the Web Service Factory if you're familiar with that.)

Finally I turned the whole message into a generic using a base class called EntityRequest

I corrected this error and everything went well for a week until I had to make my first change to the service interface. I added a new operation contract, clicked the handy Update Service Reference on my client and boom.

Installation :: Unable To Add The AJAX Toolkit Tab In VS 2008 Tool Box

Mar 24, 2010

I am in the process of migrating the ASP.Web Application from .NET framework 1.1 to 3.5.

I installed the VS 2008 (framework 3.5 SP1) and was able to rebuild the ASP.NET web app from 1.1.

I downoladed the AJAX Toll Kit library from codeplex [URL]

I was able to add the AJAX Toolkit tab in my VS 2008 tool box.

I am using the AutoComplete serach extender which works fine when I use the Ajax Tool Kit Script manager.

When I use the Ajax Extension Script Manager in place of Ajak ToolKit Script manager I get an error "

AjaxControlToolkit requires ASP.NET Ajax 4.0 scripts. Ensure the correct version of the scripts are referenced. If you are using an ASP.NET ScriptManager, switch to the AjaxScriptManager in System.Web.Ajax.dll, or use the ToolkitScriptManager in AjaxControlToolkit.dll.

why AutoComplete Search Extender is not working with the Ajax Extension Script Manager.

Sql Server 2008 - .Net Membership Via .NET Website Administrator Tool?

Mar 11, 2010

I created a database with aspnet_regsql, the database was created in sql sever 2008 and not in data folder in my project (do I need to move it to the folder manually?). Next, in Web Site Administration Tool I went to provider section and clicked don Test button.

I got an error:

Could not establish a connection to the database. If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider.

Maybe I need to set something in a web.config, like membership settings or connection strings (or ASP.NET Website Administrator Tool should create those settings for me)?

Update: Maybe it happens because I am using SQL server 2008 full and not express?

Update 2:

After setting membership section and connection string to my aspnetdb database in Web Site Administration Tool I've opened security->Security Setup Wizard->Define Roles (stage 4) I got this error:

An error was encountered. Please return to the previous page and try again.

The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database. at

Is There A Tool In Visual Studio Or Plug-in To Automate Creating Buddy Class Validation

Dec 18, 2010

I am walked by Scott Hanselman's book through how to create NerdDinner MVC application.To validate the entity type Dinner that is generated by Entity Data Model Wizard, he extended the entity Dinner first by using partial class trick and then made a buddy class to be associated with Dinner.

namespace NerdDinner.Models
public partial class Dinner { }
public class DinnerValidation
Required(ErrorMessage = "Title is required")]
[StringLength(50, ErrorMessage = "Title may not be longer than 50 characters")]
public string Title { get; set; }

How To Generate A Fully Qualified URL Within A Class

Nov 7, 2010

I have a generic class and I want to generate a URL when given the controller and action values. The most obvious method is Html.Action(controller, action), but this can only be called within a View. I tried adding 'using System.Web.Mvc;' to my class, but this doesn't give me the Action() method. I also tried converting this to an HtmlHelper class, but again no luck.

How do I generate a fully qualified URL within a class using the controller and action names?

Best Way To Generate Url Via Page.GetRouteUrl In A Helper Class?

Nov 5, 2010

I have just added routing in a new 4 web forms application, and have got my route table set up ok and page requests are working fine. What I now want to do is use the Page.GetRouteUrl method whenever I need to generate one of my seo friendly Url's. I started to implement this across various pages then thought it might cut down on code a bit if I had a method in one of my own helper classes, that constructs this url (using the Page.GetRouteUrl method) as I might have several parameters that need to be specified against the Page.GetRouteUrl method each time.

However, within my helper class, it doesn't know what 'Page' is. I was thinking I could pass in 'Page' from the page that wants a routed url to be generated, but in some cases I want to construct one of these Url's in another class which doesn't know what 'Page' is, and in that scenario wouldn't be able to pass it in as a param (and therefore wouldn't be able to use the Page.GetRouteUrl within my helper class). What is the normal approach when wanting to use Page.GetRouteUrl within classes that don't have an instance of the Page object?

Way To Generate Links Automatically Via A Static Class

Jun 10, 2010

I would like to generate my links automatically via a static class in each of my aspx pages (or in a common BasePage).Currently I use this:

private const string TEMPLATE =
public static string Link ()
string link = String.Format(TEMPLATE);
return link;

But the name of my page, One.aspx is hardcoded. Is it possible to generate the path instead of this hardcoded constant TEMPLATE. You should know that I do not instantiate the class before creating the link.
