VS 2008 Adding A Control To Page

Jan 19, 2010

I have an existing page. I drag a text box control from the tool box onto the page. When I execute the application I get error (this happens to other additional controls as well):

<asp:TextBox ID="TextBox2" runat="server"></asp:TextBox>
At this point I do not have any errors.

Now when I reference the control in the code behind, it gives me error when I execute the application.

If TextBox2.Text = "" Then
mySqlCommand.Parameters.Add(New Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter("@GroupName", Data.SqlDbType.VarChar, 50)).Value = DBNull.Value
Else
mySqlCommand.Parameters.Add(New Data.SqlClient.SqlParameter("@GroupName", Data.SqlDbType.VarChar, 50)).Value = TextBox2.Text
End If
Error2Name 'TextBox2' is not declared.
Error3Name 'TextBox2' is not declared.

VS 2008 - Error With Adding Parameters To SQLDatasource Control

Aug 19, 2011

I use the sqldatasource control a lot with stored procedures. But this time I'm using some code I found online where I am defining the new sqldatasource in the code and using it. You can see this below. I am getting a NullReferenceException on the first SelectParameters line and not sure why. Do I need to add the parameters different?

Code:
Dim SqlDataSource As New System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSource()
SqlDataSource.ConnectionString = ConnectionString
SqlDataSource.SelectCommand = "MySprocName"
SqlDataSource.SelectCommandType = SqlDataSourceCommandType.StoredProcedure
SqlDataSource.SelectParameters("Distance").DefaultValue = 25
SqlDataSource.SelectParameters("ZipCode").DefaultValue = "31410"
Dim arg As New DataSourceSelectArguments()
Dim dv As System.Data.DataView = DirectCast(SqlDataSource.[Select](arg), System.Data.DataView)

C# - Dynamically Adding Text Fields On C# 2008 Page?

Feb 24, 2010

My C# web app requires the user to enter automobile information. The user can add information for one auto, or more (max 20).

My page has these text fields: Car Number, Car Make, Car Year, Mileage, VIN I have a button that allows the user to "Add More Cars" is to allow the user to add more than one car.

When the user clicks "Add More Cars", how can I dynamically display the text boxes, and keep track of how many cars the user has added (in order to load them to an array and write to database)

Adding To Page Control Collection From Inside A User Control?

Feb 12, 2011

I have an asp.net usercontrol which represents a "popup" dialog. Basically, it's a wrapper for the jQuery UI dialog which can be subclassed to easily make dialogs.

As part of this control, I need to inject a div into the page the control is used on, either at the very top or very bottom of the form so that when the popup is instantiated, it's parent is changed to this div. This allows "nested" popups without the child popup being trapped inside the parent popup. The trouble is, I can't find a safe way to inject this div into the page. A usercontrol doesn't have a preinit event, so I can't do it there, and calling Page.Form.Controls.Add(...) in Init, Load or PreRender causes the standard exception "The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload phases."

I thought I had found a solution by using...

ScriptManager.RegisterClientScriptBlock(Page, Me.GetType, UniqueID + "_Dialog_Div", containerDiv, False)

... which seemed to work well normally, but recently a coworker tried putting an UpdatePanel inside the dialog and now she's getting the error "The script tag registered for type 'ASP.controls_order_viewzips_ascx' and key 'ctl00$ContentBody$OViewZips_Dialog_Div' has invalid characters outside of the script tags: . Only properly formatted script tags can be registered."

How are you supposed to add controls to the pages control collection from inside a user control?

Web Forms :: Adding Control From Another Page?

Apr 17, 2010

I am looking for some advice on how to accomplish something. What I have is a gridview on a page that I want on another page. I would like to show this gridview in a modalpopup.The problem is that the gridview is on a page that is not open and is not likely to be the previous page. I have simply put an iframe inside the modalpopup and loaded the page containing the gridview, however this page is a child page and I get a lot of content from the master page that I do not want. All I want from the page is the gridview.The two options I am considering are putting the gridview in the master page or copying the gridview, and all its events code, to the page that calls the modalpopup.Is there a better way to do this? Or should I just put the gridview in the master page. Can I load a control from a page that isn't open?

Security :: Adding A Loginview Control To A Page?

Jul 18, 2010

I have a page that originally didn't contain a login view. I have now added one of those so that I can vary the display according to role membership.

However I have some VB code that references ojects that were originally on the main page but now sit within the Loginview. These code segments were triggered on a Page_Load event. Since moving the objects on the page all of the references to objects there now fail as if they didn't exist. (Presumably because they are now within a LoginView)

I assume I need to change the location of my code but am stuck to find out where it should now go.

I assuem now I need two versions of my code too - one to match each of the two role possibilities for the LoginView?

C# - Dynamically Adding A Custom User Control To A Page?

Nov 3, 2010

I have a usercontrol (ascx) that I want to dynamically add to a page.

Neither the control nor the page has a namespace (thanks crappy vendor).

When I use the following, it tells me it cant find the "type or namespace"

StayTunedControl = (UserControler_StayTuned)LoadControl("~/UserControler/StayTuned.ascx");
Page.Controls.Add(StayTunedControl);
StayTunedControl.StayTunedID = Convert.ToInt32(IncludesStayTunedMeta.Value);

After some tweaking to the namespaces, etc, I am now at a point where the 3rd line above generates the following error:

'System.Web.UI.UserControl' does not contain a definition for 'StayTunedID'

I was hoping that casting StayTunedControl as type (UserControler_StayTuned) would fix this.

VS 2008 - Page And A Custom Control On That Page

Sep 7, 2011

I have an asp.net pagel called UserApproval.aspx. On that page is a custom control ascx. So the order of events is that UserApproval's Page_Load is called, then the ascx's Page_Load is called. The ascx page might discover a problem and can't render what it needs to render (if the user isn't authorized). It has no problem hiding some of the web controls on it, but I would also like to hide some of the web controls on the parent/UserApproval page. Am I able to do this?

For example, the parent page displays instructions about clicking a button. But the buttons are built by the custom control if the user is authorized to see the buttons. If he can't, can I change or hide the parent's instructions?

Jan 20, 2010

In a User Control, I need to add a Div to the end of its parent's page. I've done this in a number of ASPX pages, where I put the code to generate the Div and its contents in the page's PreRender event handler, and it works fine. But when I try to do the same thing in the PreRender event handler for the User Control, I get the following error:

The control collection cannot be modified during DataBind, Init, Load, PreRender or Unload phases.How do I accomplish this in a User Control?

C# - Adding User Control To Page Programmatically While Preserving Controls Already Present

Mar 25, 2011

I am trying to add a user control into a div at runtime. I can add the control no probelem but it overwrites the previous control added.Basically, I am trying to add passengers to a travel system - the passenger details are in the user control and I don't know in advance how many there will be. I have an add new passenger button which should append the new user control into the div without overwriting the previous passenger. The code is c#/.net 4. I have tried to save the control data into viewstate and re add it with the new one but that also doesn't work. Here is a snippet of the code I'm using

foreach (Control uc in p_passengers.Controls) {
Passenger p = uc as Passenger;
if (p != null) {
p.SaveValues();
}
}

however, p.SaveAs() (just writes the control values into ViewState) is never hit.

VS 2008 / Didn't Put The Custom Control On The Page

Jan 25, 2011

I haven't worked on web applications in eight months or so (last contract work was WinForms), and I am trying to remember what I knew about custom controls. My issue is that I am replacing a developer who is gone and there isn't much doc or knowledge on-site anymore regarding at what point his code was left off. So I am figuring it out. We work with 3rd-party software API's. In an extension (a DLL), I am able to test what 3rd-party page is being navigated to and navigate to my own page instead. Let's call this page UserApproval.aspx when its the 3rd-party page, and UserApproval_mmock.aspx when it's mine (really his - the former developer's). The former developer has a line of code in the _mmock page, like so:<%@ Register TagPrefix="mockCustomCtl" TagName="TestControl" Src="~/Folder-1/Controls/MyCustomControl.ascx" %>Nowhere else in the code do I see a reference to mockCustomCtl. Shouldn't I, if the page is indeed rendering this control? Could that be where he left off - he created his own replacement page, created the custom control (I do have the source to MyCustomControl.ascx), but didn't actually put the custom control *on* the page?

VS 2008 File Upload Control - Pass Image Straight To .aspx Page?

Nov 5, 2010

I have read about the file upload control in asp.net and tried it and works great. But I want to know if I can use it for another purpose. I have a video capture control that can be used for webcam apps or anything else. It has a method called HTTPUpload where it will upload an image file to the server using the HTTP upload protocol. My question is can i use the .net FileUpload control for this? And if so, how can I pass the image file straight to the .aspx page without having to submit a button? Would the file be as a query string variable?

Arguments:
WebServer = web server address
WebPage = name of upload web page
Fields = list of 'fieldname' and 'fieldvalue' values delimited with '|'
Files = list of 'fieldname' and 'file path' values delimited with '|'
Returns TRUE if successful, or FALSE otherwise.
Example
vcx.HTTPUpload "[URL] , "upload.asp",
"field1|value1|field2|value2" ,
"file1|c:foldermypic.jpg|file2|c:foldermyvideo.avi"

VS 2008 Adding Columns To A Gridview Dynamically

Jul 13, 2010

I have seen code for adding columns at runtime but here is another scenario for you. I am using a SQLDatasource control for my gridview. And the data returned can have different columns based on the filter meaning one time I may have a column A1, A2, A3 and another time I may have A2, A3, A4. Is there any way I can look at the columns when it is binded at the beginning and add the columns first?

I really need to use the SQLDatasource though because I am connecting to an AS400 and it is using a connection already made in the webconfig and do not know any other way. I do if it was MSSQL server but not this.

Web Forms :: Adding Text Box Dynamically On C# 2008?

Feb 25, 2010

I am working on an application, where a user will enter their primary information (Name, Address, Email, Phone etc), then enter their automobile information (usually a fleet of automobiles).

My web page currently has one row of text boxes (Car Make, Year, Model, VIN, Mileage, License Plate)

Below this is a button called "Add More Cars"

What I am trying to do here is allow the user to add more cars if they have more than one that needs to be registered.

My problem is how do I do this dynamically?

2nd problem, how do I collect the data entered by the user (for all cars), to be able to write them to the database?
