Web Forms :: Performance - Page Is Being Loaded For The First Time Vs SubSequent Request?
Sep 17, 2010
I have some serious performance Issues with Windows controls loading first time on IE Browser then subsequent request's. When ever i open Browser first time , mywebsite takes 7 seconds to load, but on subsequent request without closing browser it loads with-in 2 seconds.I Knew IIS on first time it re-compiles the process and for subsequent request's it wont perform and it cahches .I'm looking for better options to improve performance, when ever first time reqest's comes to web server.
On IIS 7 Server,I was using both Dynamic and Static compression enabled.Also,On application pool ,I set "ShutDown Time(Limit)" and "Startup Time(Limit") to 90 (seconds).Here is web.config i disable below to improve performance issues.
<trace enabled="false" pageOutput="false" />
<compilation debug="false"/>
Here is the Server Configuration
Windows 2008 Server
IIS 7 64 bit
Upto Date patches.
.Net Framework 2.0,3.0,3.5
Need inputs to improve performance when user call website for first time.

I have a LinkButton which fires an OnClick event to update some Labels; however, after the first firing of OnClick, it won't fire again when I click another (or the same) LinkButton which runs the same OnClick event. (It's a list of people, each a LinkButton, and clicking on one brings up their details)
If I leave the page a few minutes, it will work again, almost as if whatever was preventing OnClick firing timed-out. Of course, this won't be any use to the users!
This is my ASP.NET code for the LinkButtons (encapsulated in a DataList):
[Code]....
All the connections work, the data is retrieved, etc, so everything except the OnClick firing works. I've done a search of the internet and the forum, and found this seems to have been a long-standing problem since the first ASP.NET, but there is no solution for ASP.NET 3.5. Does anyone know what causes this, or where I might be going wrong?

I thought that Page_Load events executed every time a page was loaded not just the first time. Am I wrong on this?
I have a Page_Load event that writes text to a label to display on the screen: Output.Text &= "Welcome to my Website <br />" (Output being the ID of a Label control)
I also have an On_Click event for a button to display the same information: Output.Text &= "Welcome to my Website <br />"
After clicking the button, I expected to see the output twice. Once for the page being reloaded and once for the click event. I thought that Page_Load events executed every time a page was loaded not just the first time.

When a user visits our site they see a coverflow. They are not logged in so they cant see any images. Once they log in they should be able to see images in the coverflow but they cant because the flash object is being cached.
A user can get around this problem by setting the IE settings to (check for newer versions of stored pages every time they visit a site) however we need a way to force the browser to refresh the flash object once they are logged in, without telling all of our users to change the settings in their browser.
Is this possible?
[code]....
You can see my inline c# script to generate random numbers but that doesnt seem to refresh the object.

I have an ASP.NET website that worked fine using and debugging in VS2008. I went through the upgrade process opening the solution in VS2010. I can run the site, but as I make changes in the app_code folder classes, they don't seem to commpile and warn me of compile-time errors. As soon as I get to a point that calls the class, the errors show up. Sounds JIT I guess, but this isn't how it was working in 08. Is there an option that was changed in the upgrade process? This is a large project, I really don't want to break something and not find out until some obscure page is opened.

how to implement a counter in label which decrements every time page is loaded in asp.net(vb)? It would be better if that counter value is accessed from and updated into database..
I've tried this on buttonclick but the value is reset automatically to intial value everytime as the button is insert and page is reloaded
Protected Sub InsertButton_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
Dim entries As Label = FindControl("label1")
entries.Text = entries.Text - 1
End Sub

I am dynamically creating a table of checkboxes on my test.aspx page. The dimensions (row and column count) of the table are determined by querying the database. In test.aspx page, I do the following:
<script language="C#" runat="server">
protected void Page_Load ( object src, EventArgs e ) {
//Query the database to get the data for rows and columns
CheckBox[] chkBox = new CheckBox[rows * columns]; //creates a collection of checkboxes
//Iterate over the query set in a double for loop to create dynamic checkboxes
}
</script>
Right now I have the number of rows=20 and columns=10, but it can increase (with the columns more likely). I used the Net tab in Firebug to ascertain the time taken by different events and found that GetTest.aspx is taking close to 4 minutes, which is too long a time to wait. Is there a way to being down the page load time? Is my approach to create dynamic check boxes correct?

Edit: I would like to keep the infrastructure as is, so while the framework ideas are appreciated, please keep your suggestions centered on the context I have provided.
Background
I'm building a web-based application that dynamically loads plugins. Each plugin comes with a manifest file that contains its dll location, namespace, and type.
Right now I'm using System.Reflection.Assembly.LoadFile to load up the dlls based off the locations provided in the manifest files. Then I load the types and so on.
As an Aside:
I may wind up changing to System.Reflection.Assembly.LoadFrom since I'll eventually be loading files from outside the bin directory. But if their is a better way (Assembly.Load or something), feel free to add that in as well
Problem
The problem is that Multiple plugins can potentially run off the same dll. So I wind up executing System.Reflection.Assembly.LoadFile("Identical.dll") multiple times.
I have the idea to check if my assembly has already been loaded by iterating through AppDomain.CurrentDomain.GetAssemblies(), but I don't know if that will help with performance (or if it will work period, I haven't tried it).
Also, I can't keep a list of loaded assemblies due to the project's design constraints (though you may argue that it's a poor design: I can't change it, even if I wanted to OR agreed with you... so please don't press the issue.
Ultimately my goals are:
Don't ever re-load the same assembly twice. Performance is key.

I have an asp.net application running on a production server.
The cpu usage on the server is very high, 80-90%.
Each request however does not appear to be taking too long, unless the cpu has peaked at 100%.
I need to obtain some profiling data in order to determine if the high cpu usage is due to a small number of high cpu requests, or, if it is just general high load.
I can add more cores to the machine and also web farm the app but I will need evidence in order to justify any costs and future proofing the performance.
Is there a way of logging to a file the CPU usage for each page request?

I'm currently developing a few ASP.NET MVC2/.NET 3.5SP1 web-services that are mostly IO bound (execute a couple HTTP back end calls + DB write per request) and i'm getting really poor load-testing performance.
To make sure it wasn't something in my application, I created a brand new ASP MVC 2 project (project -> new -> "ASP.NET MVC2 Web Application", based on .NET 3.5 SP1), added a "TestController" with the following action:
[Code]....
I deployed this on a dual-core test server, running Win2008 and IIS7, Application Pool set to "integrated mode". I have the following in my C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFramework64v2.0.50727Aspnet.config:
[Code]....
Just in case, I added the following DWORD key in the registry:
[Code]....
I verified I was able to access my test action from a regular browser and started a load test from another machine on the same network: user load set to 500, no "think" time.
The following is what I observe on the machine running the loadtest after about 8 minutes:
req/s: 5.98avg response time: 78.4 secondsno errors whatsoevernote that the local CPU is 1-2% On the test server, this is what I observe using perfmon:
request current: flat line at 501request execution time: flat line at 1506 ms avg => this makes sense though I don't understand why I see the request coming back after 78 seconds at the other end% proc time avg < 1%request queued as well as all others asp.net v2.0.50727 counters at 0 I don't get it. I believe the expected behavior would be to see about 333 req/s (500/1.5) with a avp response time of 1.5xx seconds...

As an extensibility option for my web application I would like to allow the user to add sections to it by simply making new folders and uploading files to them. So, for instance, if they created (in the webroot): /UserContent/StaticPages/First/Second/index.txt. Then in the main menu there would be a new menu point "First" with the submenu point "Second", which would lead to markdown-parsed version of index.txt. This way the user can upload any static menu points he wants (such as "About us", "Contact us", "Our Mission" etc.) Another extensibility point is that I would like them to add headers/footers to specific webpages in a similar fashion. I'm using ASP.NET MVC3, so there are pretty URLs, and it would be easy for the user to just create: /UserContent/Additions/Store/Categories/35/header.txt
And when someone opened [URL] the markdown-parsed header.txt would be prepended. This is simple for the user, and simple for me (I don't need to make sophisticated admin panels and WYSIWYG editors). However I'm worried about the performance. This scheme means that on each GET request I would need to scan the /UserContent/StaticPages folder and check for the existences of the header/footer files (several, because parent levels can have their header.txt/footer.txt as well).
I could cache the result, but then I have to manage the cache and the user will need to know that changes can take up to X minutes to display. Would this be a premature optimization? There won't be much data in those folders, so Windows will probably be able to easily cache their contents itself.

I want to implement a response time monitor in a ASP.Net application. This monitor has to calculate the average response time during 2 secs. Whats the performance counter i can use. I tried ASP.NET ApplicationsRequests/Sec but did not work. Whats the best way to do this. I am using the default server formed by VS2005 for development, does this affect the performance counter programming?
Where should I implement the logic? Global.ASAX? in every 2 sec i want to check this value and make some decisions.
In addition, what are the parameters I can alter in a ASP.Net application at runtime to improve perfromance. How can I change them?

Following is the trace.

I reviewed the previous article on a similiar subject, but it was more for C+. I have an Access db feeding a Gridview control, with the defaults of 10 records per page. I know there are more then 10 records for the information I searching on, and pages 2 & 3 are listed in the 'paging' feature in the header. By the way, my page is results.aspx.
Clicking on page 2 results in no additional results being displayed. I understand a little from the other post, that Gridview tied to Access will not automatically show results past page 1, without some additional coding changes.
<asp:GridView runat="server" id="GridView1" AutoGenerateColumns="False" DataSourceID="AccessDataSource1" CellPadding="3" AllowPaging="True" AllowSorting="True" BorderStyle="Solid" BackColor="White" BorderColor="#70C8D0" BorderWidth="1px">
<PagerSettings Position="Top" />

I'm loading a web page into an iframe. As the web I'm trying to load have some heavy stuff it takes a while to load. As it's not my page I cannot change the HTML code neither the codebehind, so I want to put a progress bar while loading the web into the iframe and stop when it finishes loading. I'm doing it through javascript and I tried to trigger it in every load/unload event of the webs codebehind with bad results. Finally, I tried to trigger it in the body's onload event. It seemed to work, but the progress bar dissapears a couple seconds before the web is fully loaded into the iframe.
Its possible to know when the web has finished loading the iframe or when the web page which is loading in the iframe has finnished loading?
