Workaround Non-themeable Properties (specifically Asp:Button OnClientClick)?
Mar 12, 2010
Retrofitting ASP.NET WebForms themes to an old application I have a need to theme an <input> tag such that the JavaScript click event is different for each theme. I replaced with tag with an asp:Button, only to disciver that the OnClientClick property is not themeable.

I have an asp.net button on a web page.
The OnClientClick code disables the button so that the user cannot submit more than once. It also changes the text of the button to "Please wait..."
Trouble is, because it is getting disabled the "Please wait..." text looks rubbish... How can I style the button so that even though it is disabled, it looks enabled, within javascript.
<script type="text/javascript">
function btnSubmit_ClientClick(Client) {
var ok = Page_ClientValidate();
if (ok) {

I have Onclientclick event attached to the button in serverside code like below,TopPanelButton.OnClientClick = string.Format("if(!ValidData({0},{1},{2},{3})) return false;", txtOD.ClientID, radCmbOD.ClientID, txtgetMe.ClientID, RadAjaxLoadingPanel1.ClientID);Also, the onClick event is attached for the same button in the aspx page,
<asp:Button ID="TopPanelButton" runat="server" Text="Go"
CssClass="CBtn1" Width="30px" Height="21px" OnClick="TopPanelButton_Click" />
The serverside click event should fire if the onclientclick return true. The "ValidateData()" function is called to validate the entries in the form.This code is working fine in IE. But in Firefox, both events are not firig. If I comment the "TopPanelButton.OnClientClick =..." code then onClick event is firing.

the OnClientClick event of a button on my page does not appear to be able to call javascript functions.
I have the following html
<%@ Page Language="C#" AutoEventWireup="true" CodeFile="Default2.aspx.cs" Inherits="Default2" %>
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" > [code]....
However the click function does not fire although if I put the alert directly in the buttons OnClientClick attribute it works.

I have a dropdown list, where when I select OPTION value a Textbox appears. The issue is that when, I submit directly the required filed errors gives me message for both ie for dropdown and Textbox. It should only give error for dropdown.
Second thing,
The textbox validation is not firing when submitted without any value in it.
see the code for your reference:
<asp:DropDownList ID="ddlGraduation" runat="server" CssClass="txtfld-popup_drp1">
</asp:DropDownList>
<asp:RequiredFieldValidator CssClass="error_msg" ID="reqGraduation" runat="server" ControlToValidate="ddlGraduation" ErrorMessage="Please select

I have a page for a product listing using a datalist control. I have customized the item template and added a link button that says Click to Order. I then databound that linkbutton with the onclientclick to the "ProductID" field, but I would like to set a variable or use some method of getting the productID of which item they clicked so I can add that product to an order. I cannot understand how to find out which item was clicked though... here is my code:

I have a GridView with a couple of buttons (asp:Button) in it (last row). Both of them have a CommandName attribute on them and this is handled server side in a grid_RowCommand event handler. Now, this works fine. However, I need to add client side code (Javascript/jQuery) to disable the two buttons when someone clicks on or the other. This is to prevent the user from double-clicking and creating potential havoc.
The way I have done this is by adding OnClientClick on both buttons which calls a javascript function that uses jQuery to disable the two buttons. This works fine, it's just that the page doesn't post back and so the RowCommand event handler never fires.

I've just read on the net about a newly discovered security vulnerability in ASP.NET. You can read the details here. The problem lies in the way that ASP.NET implements the AES encryption algorithm to protect the integrity of the cookies these applications generate to store information during user sessions.This is a bit vague, but here is a more frightening part: The first stage of the attack takes a few thousand requests, but once it succeeds and the attacker gets the secret keys, it's totally stealthy.The cryptographic knowledge required is very basic.
All in all, I'm not familiar enough with the security/cryptograpy subject to know if this is really that serious.So, should all ASP.NET developers fear this technique that can own any ASP.NET website in seconds or what?How does this issue affect the average ASP.NET developer? Does it affect us at all?
In real life, what are the consequences of this vulnerability? And, finally: is there some workaround that prevents this vulnerability?EDIT: I'd like to summarize the responses I got so far.So, this is basically a "padding oracle" type of attack. @Sri provided a great explanation about what does this type of attack mean. Here is a shocking video about the issue!About the seriousness of this vulnerability: Yes, it is indeed serious. It lets the attacker to get to know the machine key of an application. Thus, he can do some very unwanted things.
In posession of the app's machine key, the attacker can decrypt authentication cookies.
Even worse than that, he can generate authentication cookies with the name of any user. Thus, he can appear as anyone on the site. The application is unable to differentiate between you or the hacker who generated an authentication cookie with your name for himself.It also lets him to decrypt (and also generate) session cookies, although this is not as dangerous as the previous one.Not so serious: He can decrypt the encrypted ViewState of pages. (If you use ViewState to store confidental data, you shouldn't do this anyways!)Quite unexpected: With the knowledge of the machine key, the attacker can download any arbitrary file from your web application, even those that normally can't be downloaded! (Including Web.Config, etc.)
Here is a bunch of good practices I got that don't solve the issue but help improve the general security of a web application.You can encrypt sensitive data with Protected Configuration Use HTTP Only cookies Prevent DoS attacksNow, let's focus on this issue.Scott Guthrie published an entry about it on his blogScottGu's FAQ blog post about the vulnerabilityScottGu's update on the vulnerabilityMicrosoft has a security advisory about itUnderstanding the vulnerabilityAdditional information about the vulnerabilityhe solutionEnable customErrors and make a single error page to which all errors are redirected. Yes, even 404s.
ScottGu said that differentiating between 404s and 500s are essential for this attack.) Also, into your Application_Error or Error.aspx put some code that makes a random delay. (Generate a random number, and use Thread.Sleep to sleep for that long.) This will make it impossible for the attacker to decide what exactly happened on your server.Some people recommended switching back to 3DES. In theory, if you don't use AES, you don't encounter the security weakness in the AES implementation. As it turns out, this is not recommended at all.Some other

I ran into this problem using EF4 and a self-referential table (implementing an adjacency list hierarchy). NOTE: not a many-to-many reference, just a one-to-many on a single table. Attempts to resolve an intermittent InvalidOperationException ("...The ObjectContext might be in an inconsistent state...") using Context.Refresh fail due to an apparent bug in EF4. I saw, from following Shimmy's connect.microsoft.com link, on the aforementioned post, that the bug is still outstanding. Can anyone recommend a workaround? What do you do if your database and Entity Framework get out of sync?
When I get the InvalidOperationException and the message says "The changes to the database were committed successfully...", it is not true. They weren't. I tried to change an object's ParentId from 1 to null (ParentId of type int?). My object's ParentId attribute is correctly changed to the expected value (null). I call Context.SaveChanges(). Then, the exception is thrown. I check the DB, and the value has not been updated. In this case, ParentId is still 1 in the database...................

I have a site that calls a long running stored procedure that eventually times out the UI. The procedure simply runs some logic in the database, and kicks of a secondary process. No data is ever returned to the UI, so I don't need the UI to wait for anything.Is there a way to call the stored procedure from the UI and move on without having the UI having to wait for the store procedure to complete?

I just bought 2 months of godaddy hosting. I've written an ASP.NET MVC3 application using EF CodeFirst. In the application I am using an initializer that will drop/create the database if the model has been changed. I get an error when I try to do this saying "Cannot drop the database 'cellularautomata', because it does not exist or you do not have permission."I assume this has to do with the fact that I am on shared hosting and do not have permissions to drop/create databases. Is there any way around this?

I have a text field set up to accept a date: [Code]....
how to get the validator to make sure that the YEAR is acceptable. For instance, I can enter a year of "0000" and the validator will not catch it or display the error message. I can even enter a year of "9999" also. The only time the validator catches it is if I input something like "45/95/7589" for the date.

I've taken over work for the custom forums that a previous developer created at my job, and came across a minor bug. We don't allow animated GIFs as avatars in the forums. However, if someone were to take an animated GIF, rename it to imagename.jpeg, and then upload it, the forums will show the image as being animated.
It's a very odd bug as I didn't even think it played the animation if the extension wasn't .gif.
So my question is: Is there a way to check (in .NET 2.0) if an image is an animated gif, even if the extension isn't?

I have an ASP.NET project which is pretty n-tier, by namespace, but I need to separate into three projects: Data Layer, Middle Tier and Front End.I am doing this because...
A) It seems the right thing to do, and
B) I am having all sorts of problems running unit tests for ASP.NET hosted assemblies.
Anyway, my question is, where do you keep your config info?Right now, for example, my middle tier classes (which uses Linq to SQL) automatically pull their connection string information from the web.config when instantiating a new data context.If my data layer is in another project can/should it be using the web.config for configuration info?If so, how will a unit test, (typically in a separate assembly) provide soch configuration info?
