Javascript - Keep Track Of Dynamically Created DOM Elements?
Mar 26, 2010
Assume you have a page in ASP.NET where it makes sense to use JavaScript/jQuery to modify the DOM with values that will eventually be read by the server on submit. For example, you have a form that allows end users to add/remove objects (like dependents on a health insurance form or assets on a loan application). What are some ways to ensure that these items are detected and retrieved by the server once the information is submitted?
I've tried a few things that work, but none of them seem perfect so I wanted to see what the community had to offer. Also, I'm not looking for suggestions that avoid dynamic DOM elements (like use a Wizard, etc.). I'm specifically trying to improve my technique with dynamically created DOM elements.

I have a page where i am creating a number of <span> elements using clientside code.
I am creating the elements using jquery like this
[Code]....
But this returns a null object everytime. I have tried this code on a span that is on the page at the beginning and it works so i guess its something to do with how im creating the control dynamically.

I created dynamically a table with 3 rows not by using table tag. I need to find these rows in scripting, in button click, if any of these rows is empty then need to generate an alert message like enter current row.

On runtime I am creating table structure using javascript and appending it to the div which is placed in an update panel. Problem here is, when I use asp.net button control, onClick of the button it posts the page to server and whatever javascript tables I have created it goes off. When I use html input button (input type="button") I don't face this problem and tables also stay there. But I have to use asp.net button to take necessary actions on the server side. Is there any way that I can restore the structure or use asp.net button control alongwith dynamic javascript.

I've a JavaScript function in my page through which i make some elements in the page as 'JQuery UI droppable'.
function setDroppableTargets()
{
$(.cssDockZone).droppable();
}
But the elements with the class cssDockZone is created dynamically upon user interaction. So in the code behind i create the control first and finally at the end i register a scriptblock which calls setDroppableTargets().
//set droppable targets ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock(this.GetType(), "setDroppableTargets", "setDroppableTargets()", true);
But the javascript function is invoked before the controls are created eventhough i register the script at the end (after creating the controls) and i cross checked it by getting the elements with class name '.cssDockZone' and i getting it as 0.
$(.cssDockZone).length

I've tried creating checkboxes, literalcontrols and textboxes. I need to generate checkboxes dynamically, depending on how many types of <whatever> the user has put in. I know how to do this (I think), but the problem is the controls don't work as they should.
If I create server controls, then for some reason I can't change the value with javascript. If I create client controls, then something appears to happen with the id so the server can't fetch the value (it doesn't recognize the id, allthough it's there in the html)
I can't use a regular checkbox with autopostback because there is to much happening at page load. On other pages on the site, this works, but on those pages the controls are not created dynamically.

I have a small form with some static elements that I am able to access with javascript the bring up a popup. 4 textboxes are generated and attached to a updatepanel. I've been trying various methods of validating the contols without generating postback.
I found anytime i registered a javascript to the scriptmanager the page must refresh.
Is there anyway it can be done?

I'm creating an quiz application which queries the database and extracts the questions and choices. I use dynamically created controls such as a checkbox list and fill the values dynamically. How do I do this? Right now I have these functions:
array_random_init(); this creates a 10 element integer array from 1-20 - extract_question(i): this extracts a question indexed at i in DB, I created the controls and set the appropriate text in this function. - validate_question(i); this is called by button_click and validates the question i according to DB.
I understand I have to recreate the controls in Page_init on postback, but what should it look like? Do I need to add "if IsPostBack" in page_init, or do I create the controls in page_init() and reset their properties in page_load when I use extract_question(i)? Also, I cannot seem to clear the selected boxes on postback, I added page directive "enableviewstate=false" but it doesn't work.

I have a website that sales associates access to view account information with clients. S.A's can only view information for accounts that they are tied to. Some clients have more than one account, S.A's can be tied to more than one account, but not all accounts of one client need to be tied to one S.A.
On the account info pages, I have account numbers (dynamically displayed labels) displayed of other accounts that the account client is associated with, which the S.A's can see. I'm modding this so that if the S.A has viewing permissions of any of the other accounts on that list of accounts, that instead of a label being displayed, a button directing them to that account page will display instead. In order for this to work, I have to attach a security function to the button, otherwise the page will blow out on the S.A's.
So I'm running a piece that is displaying a button instead of a label, which is working fine. My problem is when I try to attach the security event to the dynamically displayed buttons. It seems that the page just posts back and doesn't execute my code at all.
On my Page_Load, I'm running this after the buttons and labels are displayed:
For x = 0 to tblAccountList.Rows.Count - 1
'use a try to target the button, use catch to handle if it's instead a label, only one cell per row.
Try
Dim accountLink as Button = tblAccountList.Rows(x).Controls(0)
Addhandler accountLink.Click, AddressOf Me.PermissionViewCheck
Catch ex as InvalidCastException
Continue For
End Try
Next
I don't have any code checking for postbacks or anything like that, but the "PermissionViewCheck" event never fires and just reposts the page.

We have a asp.net web form with fairly a large number of form controls (textboxes, dropdown, checkboxlist, gridview,etc..)
There's a profile list (dropdown list) - when a profile is selected from this list, the attributes of that profile should be filled in to the other form controls. then if the user changes at least one of these form values, then the profile list value should be reset to a value 'Common'. this is an item in the profile list.
Basically that means, if a user selects 'profileA' and then changes the attributes of profileA, then the profile list should not display 'profileA', instead it should show 'Common'.
what is the best way to handle this. I know there's a jquery function for 'dirty forms', but I'm not sure how to use this, and where and when to call this function.

I've got a custom ASP.Net web user control I've built; done this enough times before but this one is misbehaving and I can't spot why.
Where the calling page includes the user control directly in its markup, all is well and the control behaves as expected.
However if the page adds this particular control dynamically (to a placeholder in the master page, which is what's calling this whole thing) the elements within it stay firmly NULL - nothing from the user control gets written to the client at all, including static content within the user control.

I have a web form that contains a usercontrol and I would like to be able to access the html elements within the usercontrol from the form page using javascript.
I tried the following:
document.getElementById('<%= usercontrol.clientid %>')
but this returned null.
I had a look around with firebug and found that the tags in the usercontrol render with clientids like usercontrolid_myelement. I'm guessing that something like this might work:
document.getElementById('<%= usercontrol.clientid %>'+'_myelement')

So I have a dropdown setup on the page called ddlVehicleType that is populated from a store. This method gets called when another dropdown is changed, and it's supposed to remove all items from the aforementioned store, re-add them as needed, and then populate the dropdown with the new values. It's doing everything it's supposed to EXCEPT clearing the store before it re-adds the values, so the result is, when I switch, I'm getting what it used to be PLUS the new values that should be in there by themselves. Here is the weird thing though, when I switch back, the values are removed without re-adding anything. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Method is below:
function filterVehicleTypes() {
var masterStore = Global.getComponent("vehicleTypeStore").getStore();
var Source = Global.getComponent("ddlValuationSource").getRawValue();
var isIncuded = '';
var IncludeFlags = '';
if (Source == undefined || Source == null)
Source = '';
Global.getComponent("ddlVehicleType").getStore().removeAll(false);
masterStore.each(function(rec) {
switch (Source.toUpperCase()) {
case 'KBB':
if (rec.get('Code') == 'KBB') {
Global.getComponent("ddlVehicleType").store.add(rec);
}
case 'NADA':
IncludeFlags = rec.get('MiscCode1');
if (IncludeFlags != null) {
isIncuded = IncludeFlags.substr(1, 1);
if (isIncuded == 'Y' && rec.get('Code') == 'NADA') {
Global.getComponent("ddlVehicleType").store.add(rec);
}
}
break;
default:
IncludeFlags = rec.get('MiscCode1');
if (IncludeFlags != null) {
isIncuded = IncludeFlags.substr(0, 1);
if (isIncuded == 'Y') {
Global.getComponent("ddlVehicleType").store.add(rec);
}
}
break;
}
});
}

I have an asp.net page with several list boxes. I would like to include some javascript on the page that allows a user to drag individual list elements from one box to another. On a normal web page, the script to do this is reasonably simple, however, with the element IDs generated by ASP.NET, I don't know what identifiers to have my script look up?

Here is my problem. I have on multiple occasions downloaded jQuery UI and tried to use it. What happens, though, is that in the examples provided in the download the UI elements look great, but in my pages when I try to use them all the formatting and style stuff is messed up. Here is an example of a date picker:
Bad Example
Here is my code:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" >
<head>
<title>Reports</title>
<meta charset="UTF-8" />
<meta http-equiv="CACHE-CONTROL" content="NO-CACHE" />
<meta http-equiv="PRAGMA" content="NO-CACHE" />
[Code]....
For my page (an '.aspx' page, if that makes any difference) I have all the images in the image folder one level below the css file, just as it is in the example folder, and the script files are all together in another folder. Is there something I need that I don't have. I shouldn't need the "demo.css" file, should I? Is there a special naming convention for items in the form of the site? Is there some special way that I need to have the folders/css files/source scripts set up, like a certain folder configuration, to make it work? Kind of lost on this one. Probably a really simple fix, but I'm pretty new to using this.
