Ssis - Performing Bulk Processing In Page?

Jan 19, 2010

We need the ability to send out automatic emails when certain dates occur or when some business conditions are met. We are setting up this system to work with an existing ASP.NET website. I've had a chat with one of the other devs here and had a discussion of some of the issues.Things to note:All the information we need is already modelled in the ASP.NET websiteThere is some business-logic that is required for the email generation which is also in the website alreadyWe decided that the ideal solution was to have a separate executable that is scheduled to run overnight and do the processing and emailing. This solution has 2 main problems:If the website was updated (business logic or model) but the executable was accidentally missed then the executable could stop sending emails, or worse, be sending them based on outdated logic.We are hoping to use something like this to use UserControls to template the emails, which I don't believe is possible outside of an ASP.NET websiteThe first problem could have been avoided with build and deployment scripts (which we're looking into at the moment anyway), but I don't think we can get around the second problem.So the solution we decided on is to have an ASP.NET page that is called regularly by SSIS and to have that do a set amount of processing (say 30 seconds) and then return. I know an ASP.NET page is not the ideal place to be doing this kind of processing but this seems to best meet our requirements. We considered spawning a new thread (not from the worker pool) to do the processing but decided that if we did that we couldn't use the page returned to signify a success or failure. By processing within the page's life-cycle we can use the page content to give an indication of how the processing went.So the question is:re there

Web Forms :: 'Page Could Not Be Displayed' Error When Application Performing Heavy Task

Jun 23, 2010

I have set executionTimeout in web.config to 3600 (which I found out that the scripttimeout will follow this value), and in the production server, I have set debug=false, session time out = 20 min. sql command time out = 1200 seconds

However, when the application is performing heavy sql task that exceed 90seconds, I got the 'Page Could Not be Displayed' error.

When I change debug=true, the application works fine. The application also works fine when I turn off the 'Show HTTP friendly message'.

Client (Javascript) Processing Rather Than C# Processing HTML?

Mar 18, 2010

We are in the process of building a huge site. We are contemplating on whether to do the processing of HTML at server side (ASP .Net) or at the client side. For example we have HTML files which acts like templates for the generation of tabs. Is it better for the server side to get hold of content section (div) of HTML load the appropriate values and send the updated HTML to the browser or is it better that a chunk of data is passed onto client and make Javascript do the work?

VS 2005 Disable Web Page Whilst Processing?

Apr 30, 2010

I have a dynamic website where each page has a selection criteria and a button. When the user clicks on the button it creates an csv file on the remote server and then emails it to the person who is logged in.

I have seen on a lot of sites where the screen goes a dark grey (still being able to see the webpage underneath) and a animated gif in the middle looking like a circular egg timer. Once the processing is complete it goes back to the webpage.

I'm not sure if i'm making sense. Like writing the asp.net front end code to the page dynamically before the .net engine generates the output html.

Page To Download A File Requires Processing In Webclient?

Jan 11, 2011

I'm trying to use a java servlet in a 3rd party tool's web interface (CA service desk) to invoke it's download file functionality using a webclient in vb.net. The trouble is the text stream from response is markup and not the acutual text file stream.

It's like the page is redirecting to another page which actually presents the file for downloading. I have no idea what the redirected page URL is.

Is there a way I can process this redirected page in order to get at the download using a system.net.webclient?

Web Forms :: URL Routing - Route To Aspx Page To Handle Processing?

Aug 20, 2010

I am able to route my urls to an existing page. Here is how our scenario is currently working:

On Default.aspx, we have several links that link to pdf files on the server. The filenames of these files change dynamically which is why we need the url routing. When the user clicks on of the urls, the link is routed to the getFile.aspx page that has logic in it to determine which file to open.

Is there a way to have the getFile.aspx page to open in the same window as the default.aspx page?

Otherwise, I need for the getFile.aspx page to close after the intended processing is complete, and I've not been able to close it without getting the close window dialog box. I figure if it opens in the same browser window, I can redirect back to the default.aspx page when processing is finished.

Page For File Upload Stops Processing In Middle Of Log Statement?

Aug 2, 2010

We have a very simple ASP.Net page for uploading a file to our webserver. The page has no controls - a client uses it to automatically send us a file each night.

On occasion, the file seems to not get to us, but the client reports that they have sent it.

We added some logging statements to the page, and discovered something quite odd. The page ceases to execute right in the middle of a log statement. No exceptions, just up and dies.

Here is the code-behind:

[code]....

I assume if there was a error in the transmission of the file that either an exception would be thrown from the reader.ReadToEnd() line. And if not an exception, I would expect the page processing to continue but that I may only receive part of the file (in which case it should log something).

The logging statement is only accessing a string variable, and it's inside a try-catch. NLog is the logging component we use, and we access that through the facade provided by the Simple Logging Facade project on Codeplex. So, we trust the logging component to be more or less bulletproof - we certainly don't see anything in our usage of it here that should be causing problems.

Why on earth could this page just up and stop processing like this?

The fact that we get a half-finished logging statement seems to point towards an error being swallowed in the logging system - but that just seems so unlikely - and we have NLog's internal logging on and it is not reporting any problems.

State Management :: Avoiding Timeouts With Very Long Page Processing?

Apr 7, 2010

I have an asp.net page that will be doing some processing that may take a very long time to complete. I cannot just set the page timeout value since this is going to be in a hosted environment and the timeout values that I set in my web.config are overridden by the server host. What I'm doing is taking a file from a FileUpload control and doing some web requests to a 3rd party service for each line in the file, all of which may take a very long time to process a large file. I'm talking on the order of, say, 30 minutes, and there's just no way to optimize this any further to cut down on the processing time. Is it possible to even do such a lengthy page request in asp.net? Can someone give me a pointer in the right direction here to make this happen? Is my only hope to create an async page? It seems that doing an async page is the way to go if I have a potential for a lot of lengthy requests, but really this massive of a request is going to happen VERY rarely so this is not an issue of running out of thread pool since most of the time this particular request will be completed relatively quickly, but on occasion it may receive a very large file it will need to process and will take a very long time. So what is the best way to handle that case?I'd also like to update the client with the processing status as the processing is going on. I'm familiar with doing client ajax calls via jQuery to a page webmethod so if there is some clean way to update the client as this long processing

Web Forms :: Show Processing Message While Page Loading Upon On Post Back

Apr 28, 2010

I am using ASP.NET 2.0 with C#(No AJAX) in my project. In a particular web page, when the a button is clicked, some server intensive C# code runs before the same page is displayed again with the results. While code execution happens on the server in response to Button_Click event, a blank white page is shown to user on his browser in between post backs. How do i show a message in this case, that the processing is still going on and ask the user to wait? I have used javascript to show a message on page unload. But this message is also erased when the page is posted back to the server and the user sees a blank white page on his browser. How do i avoid this white page? Is there a way to show a message in the blank white page? How do i show a processing Message while the page is loading upon on Post Backs to the same Page.

Strange Request - Stop All Future Processing And Reload Page Instead? (or Change My Design)

Apr 9, 2010

I want to be able to (in code) tell the page to refresh at that point ignoring anything else it was going to do.

Explanation:

I have a property lets call it AllUsers

AllUsers
{
return Database.GetAllUsers();
}

Now I have put it like this because in my code I want to just use this property to browse all the users and not have to check if its null or not up to date. The problem is if my method .GetAllUsers() throws an exception e.g. database is unavailable. If this happens I want to display a message to the user and reload the page to its initial state.

e.g. something like this

AllUsers

{
try
{
return Database.GetAllUsers();
}
catch(Exception e)
{
AbortAllCodeAndReloadAndDisplayMessage(e.Message);
}
}

Now I can reload the page using Response.AppendHeader("Refresh", "0;URL=ThisPage.aspx");

but how can I abort all code? because if I use this where I have placed my method the code will run and then reload on the next page load.

Should I change by property design? I wanted to have a property which would always be valid and up to date so any code using it wouldn't have to worrie
